Oh BumBums!
Even the guy who invented the place didn't think it was real or could be real. Or at least, a "static" reality of permanent joy.
Other than all the ironies in the text, the word Utopia itself means "No Place" as well as "Good Place".
Whatever "Utopia" we think we've found, we tend to look around for something else after a certain period of time, because we are thinking creatures and thought rarely rests - especially as thought assimilates the once novel and exciting into the everyday and humdrum.
There's an awful lot of happiness out there (and misery, and some neutral detachment), but I expect it, and my relationship to it, to constantly change and evolve.
Whether it's tennis, sex, friends, family, love, a great beach or a great view, a fantastic meal, or a vastly improved politico-economic system to now....it's always going to be involved in a process of change.
Soapy tit wanks get close though xxxx |

"I am having a nano utopia. Good coffee and toasted cinnamon bun. "
Holyfuck!
You've cracked it MB!
Nanotopia - fleeting moments of pure joy, enjoyed for what they are, in the full realisation that they must pass.
If no one has come up with it before, trademark it now before it goes viral xxxx |

For us it would probably involve a beach. I do love to be on a beach in sicily... waves on the sand, and Mt etna rumbling away behind me. But our morning on a beautiful cornish beach recently was pretty perfect too.

The closest I’ve felt to a utopia was being in the Masai Mara. Watching the sun come up with the Topi deer just off in the distance chilling in the long grass. Completely disconnected from modern life. It was bliss.
What about you MB? |

It does sound it, thanks for sharing. Nature has healing powers whether somewhere like that or a deserted beach or up on the hills. We don't do enough of that to recharge our energy and inner strength away as you say from all the stresses of modern life. I love water, the sea, streams, rivers. Calm when in them, rough and furious when looking at them from a distance |

"
But...Blade Runner is a dystopia..."
Only for Replicants (primarily). It's an advanced normal city and slice of life for everyone else. Authentic.
.
The Truman Show is what I think of when someone says "Utopia", and that to me is more dystopian, because of its engineered "authenticity".
.
You can "adapt" to a dystopian world. You may not like it, and it may be terrifying, but it has a pervasive authenticity about it.
.
The only defence against a "Utopic vision" is to be constantly on guard and alert in case the veneer wears off and catches you when you are vulnerable.
.
A thought-provoking question from the OP |
