What examples of brilliant songs being brutally massacred can people think of?

Didn't multi-millionaire oxygen thieves One Direction just manage the clever feat of butchering two classic songs at once ('One Way or Another' and 'Teenage Kicks')?

My most hated cover version is the Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under The Bridge being covered by All Saints ... makes you want to cry for all the wrong reasons ... then there is Paul Anka's "Rock Swings" album ... a swing version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" anyone? An utter travesty.

I agree. You can hear emotion in Dollys voice that Whitneys trilling could not capture.

"then there is Paul Anka's "Rock Swings" album ... a swing version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" anyone? An utter travesty."

The Paul Anka and Pat Boone albums were brilliant and both quite 'knowing', rather than the entirely unironic versions trotted out by the Reality TV bods !

Plus, Anka and Boone had shit hot big-bands that could make anything sound good !

All saints doing red hot chilli peppers under the bridge, always remember them doing an interview and they had no clue about it being a song about being addicted to heroin lol.

Change of tone here but what's the best cover you have heard? For me its gotta be faith no more covering Lionel richies "easy" they just gave it so much more soul, even lionel richie himself said it was superior to his, and uses the fnm arrangment when he plays it live

"Electric 6's version of Radio Gaga - a perfect example of how to take every drop of power and passion out of a song and replace it with mind numbing tedium."

Haven't hear it thank God

My worst ones have to be

M People - Itchycoo Park and

Counting Crows - Big Yellow Taxi

Both for the same reason really: the first is a celebration of the beauty of nature, latter a warning about modernity and the commoditisation of everything good. In both cases they take something natural and earthy sounding and turn it into something lifeless and synthetic.

Great cover versions

Saint Etienne - Only Love Can Break Your Heart

Isaac Hayes - Walk On By

Tori Amos - Lovesong

The Flaming Lips and Amander Palmer - First Time Ever I saw Your Face (not just because of the video)

John Lennon - Stand by Me

Primal Scream - Slip Inside This House

Talking Heads - Take Me To the River (which reminds me...for the 'atrocious' list - Tom Jones and The Cardigans covering Burning Down the House)
