Has anyone else seen 'Caligula: The Ultimate Cut'?

It's the re-constructed version of the original, highly controversial 1979 film 'Caligula', made from 90 hours of unreleased film, long thought to be lost, used to restore it to something akin to it's original intent. It has stella cast , including Malcom MacDowell, Peter O'Toole, John Gielgud and a young Helen Mirren in her absolute pomp.

And not to mention uncounted breasts, vaginas and penises, and all in their pomp.

For those unfamiliar here's a summary of what it's about:

"Follows Caligula as he kills his devious adoptive grandfather and takes control of the decadent Roman Empire, spiralling into depravity, devastation, and madness."

I'd be interested to hear what other Fabbers thought of it.

Saw the original. I doubt there's much more of interest in any additional content.

Helen Mirren looked good though.

I remember seeing the original on C4, many years ago now. It was the Red Triangle era, when they had a little red triangle on the corner of the screen to let everyone know if was filth. That always upped the viewing figures.

Watched it a few weeks ago (not this newer version) it’s dated but still an enjoyable watch. So surprising to watch really great actors in a soft core porn film.

There is an interesting back story to the film. But it was funded and finished by Bob Guccione who started Penthouse.

I’ve seen it. It’s a good enough film. Not seen the ‘new’ version.

I assume this isn't the version where they added porn shots that the original director had nothing to do with?

Saw part of it years ago.

It was such an awful mess of a film, I thought.

Not because of the sex, but because it didn't flow well whatsoever.

I suppose the new version can't be any worse & I've heard it makes more sense and flows better.

Not in mad rush to watch it though..

I remember watching it a long time ago, I don't remember much about it other than his sister calling him "Little Boots" I think.

My boudoir - S Wales

This was the first sex I’d ever seen. I broke into my parents stash 😂

I remember all the sex and also was there a scene where they were burying people in the sand and these big blades chopped their heads off? 🤔

Yes, named after boots - or caligae - worn by the Roman army. He had a full legionary uniform made for him by his mum as a toddler and took to following his dad everywhere.

Sorry. Boring fact overload.

I've seen 2 or 3 versions, with various levels of soft/firm/hardcore in. I think I was at university when it first came out to a lot of press muttering.

The story as I remember it was that Bob Guccione had some hard-core scenes with genuine porn actors added in after the film had been shot. The original cast was 'outraged' according to the papers...I doubt they gave a toss to be honest.

"...Sorry. Boring fact overload. "

Nah, it's an interesting story. Actually the entire Caligula/Nero debauchery story is probably just Flavian propaganda, similar to the Tudor propaganda put out by Shakespeare et Al.

Aye, just like Richard III was a hunchback & had his nephews killed. History is retold by the victors x

I saw it when it was first released in the cinema. From memory the sex scenes were the best thing about it.
