I just had an ad pop up that promises my skin would look 80% rejuvenated if I use a certain product on my face. What does that mean? Will I look 80% younger or just my face? How on earth do they measure this 80%? If I apply it all over will I be 20 again? It's all very confusing.

Also how on earth do they get away with such ridiculous claims?

Because some people are gullible and they Prey on that.

That would be my guess anyway.

I mean that in the nicest way for those that are, but I feel like that's how they get you.

Note the word ‘rejuvenated’ which is entirely subjective. They aren’t making a verifiable claim.

I think all advertising seems to play on gullibility and insecurities. The beauty industry is the worst for it though

Yes, I thought that. It depends on the starting point for one thing

I find those ads amusing. They make outrageous claims and then in tiny print its says "70% of 17 women surveyed agreed"

. Usually the percentage improvement claimed is preceded by 'up to'

It's likely couched in very vague terminology that's as good as legally meaningless or based on 1 of their own as good as meaningless tests and the 80% reduction rests on a bunch of untrained laypeople, who made this statement, after being given some leading points about the results. Of course, after being selected for gullibility first.

Before selling the snake oil to even more gullible people
