I've just realised how expendable I am in my job and it's made me uncomfortable.
I had jury service this week, so that was chalked in. It stopped end of Tuesday until next week but I managed to catch a cold...
Text my boss Wednesday and told her I was ill. No worries.
Text her this morning and said I'm still ill but will log in later if my head stops banging... she's still not even read the message!
I realise the world won't stop rotating when I'm not present but it's made me feel very disposable. In the grand scheme of things my job role is a pure luxury for the organisation.
I don't think I'm in danger of losing my job, but it just feels... weird. I'm not sure if I should be worried or take advantage of it.

I got made redundant after being there for 16 years and it's very liberating in a way. You suddenly realise like you say they'll cope without you and also there's no such thing as loyalty to you from any company. You then start being much more mercenary about it. Since I got made redundant I have had 3 jobs that I made the decision to up and leave on my terms.

I think the issue comes as my role is pretty niche, so I've spent a few years making my life easier and subsequently they're far less reliant on me. A year or two ago I couldn't take a week off without getting a phone call.
I should probably just enjoy the freedom. |

"You should. Just keep it niche enough that they miss you eventually "
I'm so pleased I battered them into a big pay rise several years ago before they realised I could be outsourced cheaper. |

I work for the state. My entire being is to improve society in small ways.

A grain of sand on the beach.
At least I'm trying. |
