New England Manager

So it’s now been confirmed that Thomas Tuchel has been named as the new England Manager but there seems to be a lot of widespread debate about whether it’s the right appointment and more so whether a foreign manager should ever have been on the wish list, let alone appointed.

Where do you stand on it and do you think it’s the right appointment?

Don’t care where he’s from. Nobody cares where Sarina is from.

I don’t mind this. He’s clearly a top quality coach. I couldn’t care less about his nationality. National teams around the world have foreign managers. I find it all a bit silly when fans scream and stomp “but he MUST be English!”.

Like any other manager…..let’s judge the guy on his results. After all, that’s what the business is about.

Foreign managers don't care about the success of this nation.

We learnt that with Capello.

Doesn't matter that he's not English, but when Guardiola and Ancelloti were supposedly the other names on the shortlist it's a little disappointing (but still an upgrade on Southgate)

Plenty of other countries around the world have a foreign manager so I don't really see what the fuss is about hiring him.

Although is the fuss more that he's a German when they are traditionally the England football teams rivals?

Where ever I lay my hat

Would prefer FIFA to say that the coach has to be from the country, a bit like the players. But he's the boss now so let's get behind him and see what he can do.

You’re assuming that he’s even interested in the job.

Plus Pep creates great sides from the players he’s wants.

Doing the England job is working with whatever is available to him, and no guarantee he’s successful.

I assumed they would have asked Pep or Jurgen first before asking tuchel…. So I don’t have a problem with it…

Is he better than the English candidates? Are you taking Eddie Howe for example over tuchel .. I wouldn’t

Even Brazil wanted Ancelotti.

All of our major sports have had foreign coaches - football, cricket, rugby.

I wouldn't take any English coach over Tuchel.

I think it’s an interesting appointment. Given the performances over the two most recent friendlies, and Carsley’s most recent interview, there was a need to expedite the process and Tuchel is probably the best available at such short notice.

I think it’s fascinating that the same people who are adamant that the England manager has to be English are the same people who absolutely hate the idea of EDI, Diversity objectives, Positive Action or ‘box ticking’ and fully believe that it should always be the best person for the job (unless the job is England manager of course)

I find it quite an interesting appointment and definitely came out of left field. I don't buy into the "The England manager should be English" narrative and think Tuchel is a very good cup manager and could do well. My only drawback really is I'm not a huge fan of his playing style and don't differentiate it much from Southgate's way of playing.

For me, playing style was one concern with Gareth but the main issue I had was the level of pragmatism and inability to manage games in the moment. I think Tuchel brings a ruthlessness, as well as technical nous, that Gareth and his team lacked.

That is a good point! I do reckon Tuchel is a better tactician and is able to see games out a bit better such as being 1-0 up in a semi-final or final.

I think Chelsea under Tuchel are a great example of a team playing good football, being stable at the back and being adaptable. The trouble with Southgate was always that not only were we boring, he didn’t have a clue how to manage a game.

Southgate gets a lot of hate but gave England more consistency in cups than any other manager we have had.

Trophies no. Consistency yes

The way I see it there is no top English manager about so the FA have gone for a top foreign manager who was unemployed so no compensation package to pay.Whilst some people will say the English manager should be English I wonder what the German are thinking about a German managing England.

I think that's it. I think play style can be a bit overstated in tournament football but I think Southgate's only came under a microscope due to the failures in those finals. Tuchel might be able to take us one step further.

The speed with which this developed from 'rumour' to 'appointment' makes me think this was sorted out directly after the Euros but kept under wraps to create the facade that the Football Association were actually looking for someone.

The roles of a Club Manager and that an International Coach are vastly different, and I wouldn't take it as read that T.T. has plenty of club success on his CV means that it will follow at International level.

The FA statement is hilarious though.

They couldn't have pushed Anthony Barry and his Englishness any harder.

If you read the statement in isolation you'd think it was a co manager arrangement.

He did a good job at Chelsea and I think if he stays on the right side of the F. A he'll be fine. It's England's golden generation of players, it's just finding the right balance.

For some reason I can't properly explain I think it should be an English manager.

Also think we need to get over ourselves. Somehow thinking we deserve to win a cup just because we have a few decent players. We have good players but evidence suggests they aren't that good. And other teams acty have players as good or better and who run about more.
