He's a strange and compelling bunch of contradictions, difficult to dislike though and the last of his generation.
At least he's dignified, which puts him ahead of the current crop by a country mile ! |

I'm not surprised he's got convictions!
Viscount Stansgate who gave up his title to become a labour politician.
Didn't give up the houses, money or anything else. Always thought he was shallow.

would you have thought of him in a better light had he gave everything away to stand as a politician..?
i know he has done much to help others less fortunate..
lots of titled and wealthy folk have and do sit in both houses of the Palace of Westminster.. |

"The only Labour politician with any integrity IMHO"
There are many, you just choose not to see them through your blue tinted glasses.
All parties have some thoroughly decent MP's, it just takes a bit of sense to recognise this fact. |

So you can't be a Labour supporter if you have wealth?.....
What a load of tosh |

Just seems that some decide that they need to celebrate decent MP's death's. So when the Benn party? |

I hardly agree with anything that Tony Benn says & I think if he ran the country it wouldn't take long for the UK to resemble North Korea.
However he does have integrity & principles & I bet no Parliament whip has made him do anything.
So that given I think he is a good bloke, just don't put him in charge! |

I must have been on a different planet. It's easy to help others when you have plenty of money and wealth.
just an opinion, I seem to have a basic mistrust of politicians generally.
Can't think why. |

Didn't say that, you might have thought it was tongue in cheek. Then again you might not. I'm quite sure the convictions the OP mentioned are not the same as my mentioning of them. |

so the general consensus about him is exactly what a think as well, dont agree with everything he stood for but he was a mp of integrity.
He was absolutely spot on with what he said about the EEC in the 70's though about being dominated by germany and it would only last 20-30 years before the european economy goes tits up. |

Don't agree with absolutely everything he says but always worth listening to and taking seriously.
He often has an interesting, compelling (and often historical) perspective on politics. |

They are vastly different in background, yet are so similar in their connective DNA. The beast of Bolsover is a legend.
Mr B was our local MP in Bristol when I was young. Immensely popular, he was stitched up by Dawn Primorolo - his own PA at the time - and was deselected. Shameful episode. But he kept the faith and remained the man he'd always been. He rose above the nonsense and came back.
I should love to meet him once more. |

Tony Benn is a bit of a hero of mine, not only got integrity but acted on his morals and worked his life tirelessly to achieve what he thought was right.
Shame we don't have more like him these days, a true parliamentarian |

Parliamentarian is EXACTLY the word. Too many now want to be someone, rather than to do something. |

Well said.
The problem nowadays is the professional politicians. They are too swayed by opinion polls, rather than their own opinions.
Whether someone is Conservative, Liberal or Socialist, I dont care. Just have courage of their convictions please! |

Wasn't Tony Benn the energy minster who wanted the North sea oil revenue ringfenced so it wasn't wasted on short term tax cuts?. If the UK had gone ahead with his idea, then the UK could be in a similar position as Norway(no national debt and oil money surplus of many billions of pounds).
As i wrote in the Thatcher thread, those who laud her as some of genius, need to remember she was extremely lucky that she had the massive oil receipts to allow her to push through her economic policies(which included using that oil revenue to give the richest big tax cuts). |

"Has he died ?
This is beginning sound like an obituary
He'd do anything to put the spoilers on Maggie's funeral tomorrow "
It's good to celebrate someone living, rather than eulogising once they've shuffled off.

Benn was part of post war privileged, intellectual elite that considered Socialism not so much as a political party, but a quasi religion, and still does.
Now some might call that integrity, others a deeply patronising, patrician, ultimately disastrous, view on how, us the proles are governed.
Incompetent as a Minister Benn became a quintessential opposition cheer leader, increasingly marginalised as the decline of his brand of Socialism world wide became fact.
Like all true believers Benn's intellectual polemic never has doubt, always has the answer, always sees things that other less clever people don't see, or don't understand. Harmless, probably....but still a bit scary.

He was Minister of Technology at the time and a great champion of the project. Saved the whole English/French co-operative a couple of times I think. |

When my dad told me Thatcher's work inspired the invention of Mr Whippy ice cream, I said "How? By putting Douglas Hurd in the cabinet?" |

Hurd's puppet on Spitting Image was one of my favourites. 'Can I go to the toilet please prime ministahh??!!!!!' |
