Somebody was good enough to start a topic the other week about Underactive Thyroid aka Hypothyroidism and ever since I shared my knowledge I've been getting a lot of requests for help.
Always glad to help when I can but now it looks like my next fight with the depression is on. Sounds silly to those that don't know.
Paranoia, low mood, sadness, aleination, neck pains and I just can't seem to wake up enough to pay attention. It comes on in the space of a week or two, sometimes as quick as a few days. Talking about it really helps you to stay focused. As does a few drops of St John's Wort in a glass of warm water twice a day.
If you suffer Hypothyroidism, don't take prozac when you get depressed! |

Are you sure your depression is caused by your thyroid? A the poster above said, get regular checkups, prozac isnt the only thing thats on offer there are many drugs that could help, short or long term or as you say talking about it. Have you had your vitamin D levels checked recently? |

he put me on citalopram 20mg then raised to 40mg I was steady on that. ( flat with no ups or downs) just numb. Came off them got breast cancer and coped well.
Now im back on the downer ..blerg ! Cry itch dont sleep cry more . he gave me Amitriptyline 25mg to help sleep but they dont work and I wake up heavy ..Not sure which way to go now really so good luck with finding something that works. |

Aye I was born with hypothyroidism and diagnosed age 2. Been on Levothyroxine all my life. You know they're related when the depression comes with the physical pains and oddities associated with low blood thyroxine levels.
Prozac is bad for you because its packed with fluoride, devastating to the pineal gland and the hypothalamus and if iodine intake can't fix what's wrong with your hormones etc. you can suffer a Myxedemal Coma, irreversible if the paramedics and doctors don't know what your condition is. |

Glad to hear you have fighting spirit. It's an essential. St John's Wort is an excellent cure too though. And fighting yourself does wear you down after a lifetime lol |

Wasnt it Hyper-Thyroidism? (overactive)? Underactive thyroid makes you put on weight, my mum had the other and went skinny for a while. Oddly enough I was the cause of that after she gave birth to me |

When I started on Thyroxine 200mcg daily 20 years ago it killed my libido completely was celibate for ten years.I developed an autoimmune condition which they treated as thrush for years . sex was impossible at that time anyway so just withdrew took them ten years to find I was depressed as well. Life could have been so much better had they sorted it sooner.Loss of sex drive weight gain and LS are now found to be connected.
No one ever discusses the LS openly which is a shame as you tend to think you are the only one. Thank heavens for the internet and sites set up to enable one to discuss these problems and find you not alone. No wonder Im depressed LOL |

Doctors here are no better than turds in white coats sometimes. Really lacking knowledge in comparison to the ones in the states.

It's like a big black cloud surrounds me.
I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid. When I was 29 nd trying to start a family. I'd been on the pill for a lot of years. Which had masked most of my symptoms. After coming off the pill everything changed. I started to get the shakes. I found it pretty hard to keep still. I always had to be on the go. I never felt the cold. As I was always running on the hot side. I could eat anything in large amounts. But always felt hungry. The palpitations scared me though. I was treated with carbimazol to start with. But it's not a long term treatment. So Ended up having the radioactive iodine treatment.
I'm now left with an underactive thyroid. Talk about the flip side of the coin. The depression creeps up on me. It tends to have got a hold of me before I realise it. |

Also, just in case any of your doctors don't know, dont take anything with Codeine. Fucks you right up mentally and physically. Stumps your metabolism! |

depends on the strength of the tablets.. and the results of your TSH and t4 levels in the blood.
Their tablet could be one 100mcg tablet, you could be taking four 25mcg tablets
tablets come in strengths of 25mcg, 50mcg, 100mcg |

wow just read this thread. Amazing what you find with a forum search.
I had a break down at work and truly have never felt so bad.
i take 1000mcg Thyroxine daily and 60mcg of Liothyronine and yet my hormones are still not behaving remotely anywhere near the 'normal' levels.
Im constantly cold, feeling low and admitted to myself that i can no longer attempt to be wonder woman and do everyhing. Massive weight gains, hair falling out in clumps, puffy face, hoarse voice.
Trying to explain to people who dont understand is like talking to a brick wall.. gave up years ago. I was told ive got 5yrs left by my doctors if no treatment is found. My kidneys are failing and ive a fatty liver. Im 25yrs old and a daughter im petrified of leaving behind |

no. they tested me for cushings syndrome but that came back negative.
i was admitted for an absoption test and discovered by blood wont absorb medication properly so im kinda stuffed until they can nail that bit.
Dispite my 1000mcg daily dose my TSH levels are currently at 314.
Doctors and my Endocronologists are truly baffled by this. |

I understand your situation as I had my Thyroid removed in May.
It has taken 6 months to get my dose right I am currently on 175mg of thyroxin.(I am still have blood tests to be sure)
But I found the whole experience an absolute nightmare. I have experience tiredness, mood changes, hair loss, dry skin and loads of other symptoms.
I have found that taking several vitamin supplement I am back to my old self. I was very skeptical about taking the supplement but they seem to be making a difference.

Interesting, I've had poor thyroid function for a while, not bad enough to treat, just various symptoms over the years...and funnily enough did a lot of research in the field 'cos I also had two sick horses, one with a rare thyroid adenocarcinoma, and her son, who was hypothyroid.
I found St Johns Wort helpful for me - I felt so good on Zyban when I gave up smoking I worked out that was the nearest I could get in a herbal. Vitex too as a dopamine agonist.
There is a link between thyroid lets say inefficiency and insulin resistance, so worth checking out the diet is appropriate for controlling that. And yes, I too found supplementation in humans and horses might be required, sufficient magnesium, iodine, selenium, zinc etc.. L-Carnitine for muscle problems.
Beware of anything containing phytoestrogens though, they can depress thyroid function - I made that mistake earlier this year and my TSH went up.
And I believe I found a broad spectrum daylight bulb really helped in winter - gonna order another one of those as soon as I finish this post. It may be that in some cases there is a hypothalamic/pituitary cause to a range of secondary symptoms. The horses nearly always ended up with Cushings after years of metabolic problems of one description or another and that was mooted in their case too. Something environmental (in the broader sense of the word) seems to be the cause in their case and I suspect many humans too. |

My sister was diagnosed for years with an under/over active thyroid. Last year got the correct diagnosis of haemochromatosis (body absorbing/holding too much iron) she now gives a pint of blood a month & is better than I have seen her since we were kids.
This is a widespread genetic trate & the 2nd largest cause of heartattacks after heart disease but no-one seems to gave heard of it. Luckily sisters diagnosis has meant my dads been diagnosed as well & both being monitored.
Just thought I'd share as my sister was messed about for half her life for an.illness she didn't really have and what has got it in check is quite simple. |

Good point, the horses actually have no mechanism for ridding the body of iron so it can build up with them quite easily and seriously adversely affect liver and metabolic function - so worth checking ferritin levels have been checked I would think. |

200mcg isnt a maximum dose..
i was told take it in the morning an hour before food was the optimum time. |

But two important studies -- a 2007 study published in the journal Clinical Endocrinology, and a follow-up larger randomized trial reported in the December 2010 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine -- have found that taking the same dose of levothyroxine (i.e., Synthroid) at bedtime, as compared to first thing in the morning, may be better. |

I dont have one. I research independently, since my docs dont understand the links between hypothyroidism and depression |
