Can someone help me on this, I have tried travel agents and airport info but am getting conflicting info. If a passport runs out in September can it be used to travel to Gran Canaria in May????? Some say yes but some say there must be 6 months remaining on the passport. Will be gratefull for any feedback.  |

Maybe not is my understanding, as Gran Caneria is outside of the EEC, i could be wrong though |

Gran canaria is in the eu and accepts the euro

Yes you need 6months remaining on the date of your return, travelling through Europe technically you no longer need a passport as the pink EU photo driving licence is all thats required |

You have to have 6 months from the date of return.
You will get credited for any months left on your old passport though.
So your new one will expire 10 years + how many months are left on your old one when you renew. |

So it wont be valid for return.

Have been on the passport office site and they do not list a phone number or email add. One travel agent said that if the passport is valid for the duration of the holiday then it's ok to go, another said there must be 6 months from the return date |

This varies from country to country - found a website back along that listed most countries, many are much less than 6 months. Can't remember the site but do a search.
Confusing and travel agents not well informed. |

That did cross my mind, lol, even in my migrainous state. It makes sense either to ring the passport people, or just renew the flippin thing.
I paid extra to get mine back quickly last time, and Mr N went to the office and waited once. Can you still do that?

Have already tried to contact them but they will not accept phone calls, looks like the only option is for her to renew it, because of the lack of time it looks like a long drive up there. Thanks to everyone for you advice. |

Passport info were a complete waste of time, phoned the Spanish embassy. As long as the passport is not out of date there is no limit to any EU country. Saved me a long drive to Peterborough.
You can't just turn up, you need an appointment now. |

Technically true, but try getting an airline to carry you on that basis, ain't gonna happen.
Friend had her hotel room robbed items including her passport stolen, phoned airline to ask what she needed, they told her consular / embassy permits to travel) this was within the EU. she spentthe rest of her holiday getting those documents |

Never understood why you need 6 months+ on your passport from the date you travel if you going away for 2 weeks as even if I had 2 months on it it would still be valid when I came home

not at all! Driving licence does not prove citizenship and therefore IS NOT a valid travel document. For EU travel you need or passport or European ID.

For stays upto 3 months you only need as long on your passport as you intend to stay ie 2 weeks left if you are going for 2 weeks.
