October Football thread.
Jump to: Newest in thread
Rather than continue to add to the old thread, thought it might be easier to start a fresh one for the new month.
Plenty on tonight, so is anyone going anywhere ? Heading across town to Orient v. Exeter this evening. Got a soft spot for the O's, am delighted to see they have recoverd after near bankruptcy and a couple of years out of the Football League.
The added bonus about going to Brisbane Road is there is cake shop to die for on Leyton High Road just as you come out of the station, and it's normally open until 10pm ! |

Aye, we played a nil-nil thriller with that non-Prem club on Friday night just gone. It's Swindon Town for us tonight. It's too much faff for me to go to matches anymore, unfortunately, so it's rare that I manage it. |

Villa and Bayern Munich tonight so looking forward to that! UTV!
My local team is an up and coming outfit, presently playing National League (North) and involved in a cup final at Wembley a few years back! Coincidentally share same colours as Villa! |

"0-1 Exeter. Orient DEFINITELY need a finisher, very wasteful in front of goal
We drew 1-1 with Swindon "
Had the pleasure of meeting a Tranmere legend last week, Pat Nevin did a chat/Q&A evening at a local theatre. Could have listened to him for hours |

"We drew at home last night against Leeds. Good point for us which kept us at the top of the table
Burnley could go top today if they win "
Decent game with Sunderland last week, and good turnout of away fans at Vic. Rd.
The Championship is a bonkers division and far less predictable than the Prem. |

After our rousing win over Bayern mid week I look forward to us beating Man Utd on Sunday. Will be sat on my sofa in my boxers shorts and villa top watching the game because that's how I roll.
Wife is a Liverpool fan so good mid week for her and now they 1 up against place as I type. |

Another decent game at The Vic, a late turnaround, and 2-1 win which was a tad fortunate. But that completes an unusual hat-trick. Watford beat Sunderland last Sat, and the previous week I was at Fulham's win over Newcastle. |

TWO games today !
QPR U21 v. Bristol City U21 at Loftus Road this afternoon - finished 0-1.
And this evening, F.A. Cup 3rd Qualifying Round replay, Chesham 4 Bishop's Cleeve 0. (Chesham home to Yeovil in 4th Qualifying Round on Saturday). |

Nobody on either side shouted "pick me" if I'm honest.
I occasionally bump into a retired manager with whom I'm friends at these academy games, and I once asked him if you were to look at the teamsheet five years hence, how many would you expect will have 'made it' ? The answer he gave was "One, maybe two, but at this stage you can rarely say who." |

That time of the week again. Anyone off to anything ?
I HATE the International breaks (particularly when everything comes to a halt to accommodate games like that dogshit spewed up at Wembley the other night, what a fucking shower).
My original plan was to go to Orient v. Huddersfield today, but I've learnt not to pre book even for Div.3/Div.4 (as I still think of them) matches on International weekends.
However, there is the consolation of the F.A. Cup 4th Qualifying Round today which as anyone who keeps an eye on non-league football knows is pretty significant, with spots in the 1st Round the prizes for the winners.
So, following on from their win on Tuesday, I'm back at Chesham United for their match with Yeovil Town (which has been made 'all ticket').
Anyone else off to a match this afternoon ? |

Good HT scoreline !!!
0-0 at Chesham, all very tight. It'll either stay that way, or someone will nick it 1-0, I can't see too many goals in this one. Yeovil have had more of play, but Chesham had most clear cut chance. |

Just when it looked as if I was going to be at my first goalless draw of the season....
Chesham nick a 92nd minute winner, headed in from a corner !
Looks like Taunton-Maidenhead finished 1-1, so if that's the case, I pencil in the replay for Tuesday evening. (Then have a Watford U21 game on Thurs). |

Off to cheer on the Monkey Hangers tomorrow night at Brackley, battling for the right to play the mighty….. err, Braintree in the 1st round proper of the FA Cup.
Pick of the round for me is Northampton v Kettering, which will keep the local OB busy for the day. Hopefully TV will pick this one up.
Great draw for Chesham as well. Local non-league rivals, who have kindly hosted my local team for several seasons, so cannot begrudge them their time in the spotlight. |

I assume from that you mean Aylesbury United ? I was involved with Hayes FC/Hayes & Yeading Utd for many years, so know all about non-league clubs who totally fucked up a golden opportunity. And yes, cracking draw for Chesham.
I've settled on the Maidenhead v. Taunton replay for tomorrow night, must be a good nine years or so since I've seen a game there.
"PL2 Cup" on Thursday, Watford U21 v Cardiff U21 at King's Langley. Then from Sat 19th until Nov 9th I have nineteen games lined up in twenty-two days....but I won't spoil the fun for you, I'll let you know as & when they fall ! |

I'll raise you Hendon's old ground, another of London's old non league grounds which has long since been swept away.
It was on a small hill, surrounded by a very open area off the North Circular Road. I've been cold there in August.
Have also been to Gateshead away on a couple of Tuesday nights. The athletics stadium is a lovely venue in the drizzle and swirling winds. |

Coldest grounds I’ve ever been to are Roker Park, where the wind just came in off the North Sea and just drove through you, and Brisbane Road in Jan ‘87. My mate was going grey with cold and we both swear that when a bloke behind us had a piss on the terrace, it froze as it hit the ground. |

Actually, Blackpool when it was being renovated, on Boxing Day, it was just a scaffold with seating and no roof/cover and it was absolutely fucking freezing. It sleeted and rained and the wind..... And we lost. AND there was no food

My seat at Fulham is diagonally opposite The Cottage, and is in the block nearest to the Thames. It USED to be a tad damp & chilly on the wrong day, but of course the new Riverside Stand runs the full length of the ground, so it's nice & sheltered now.
Incidentally, what are you all paying for tickets at your club ? I've held season tickets at Watford & Fulham for 11 & 10 years respectively (neighbour uses my Fulham ticket if there's a clash - I missed Fulham's first two at home, there are two clashes over Xmas/New Year and then just one more in February) and as I get the 'earlybird' deals pay £402 at Watford (seat is in Graham Taylor Stand) at £473 at Fulham (corner block in Hammersmith End, least expensive seats in stadium).
As I regularly tootle across town to Brisbane Road and The Den I've also got 'memberships' at Orient & Millwall which give access to discounted tickets. I'm aware the fact that I watch several teams is a little unconventional, but it's my time and money, and I don't really give a shit what anyone thinks of me !!! Never have, never will.
There's also a corner block at QPR (adjacent to the away end) which they count as restricted view but I don't find too bad where tickets are priced at £22 for adults (going to a couple of games there in early November) |

£1080 for my season ticket at the London Stadium and £30 for every away game in the Premier League; I am committed to buy a ticket for every WHU away game.

I pay £457 at the King Power, sat in SK1 which is in one of the corners.
As a relatively new stadium, every sest has a good view, and being a bowl, is very sheltered.
I reckon it's good value, even if we're going to lise most weeks this year
Not sure what the upper limit is that I'd pay, but it's definitely a lot less than £1080 |

3-0 FT, scoreline flattered Maidenhead. Taunton had more of the play in second half, but Maidenhead scored twice in stoppage time, one of which was noticeably deflected. Maidenhead home to Crawley in 1st Round. |

Hartlepool lost 3-1 at Brackley, having been one up. Awful defending at set pieces cost them dear.
Key positives were the £12 entrance fee, it only took 40 minutes to get home, and the Wife was busy WhatsApping the bloke she is planning to meet again, which took my mind off Hartlepool’s inept defending. |

A cheeky bonus game tonight. Southall v. British Airways in the Middlesex Senior Cup.
Was due to be played at the B.A. ground in Hayes last week, but ground heavily waterlogged, so venue switched. Southall are currently 'homeless' so play their home games on the 3G pitch at Burnham.
Anyway, lively game, 3-1 win for Southall. |

Fulham v. Aston Villa - has the potential to be a VERY decent game.
(As for the rest of the week....out EVERY night !
Mon - Brentford 'B' v. Derby U21 [PL2 Cup, Brentford play their Academy games at what was Staines Town's old ground]
Tue - Orient v. Rotherham
Wed - Millwall v. Plymouth
Thu - Tottenham v AZ67
Fri - Tottenham U21 v Reading U21 [at Stevenage]
I know, I know.....sad anorak etc. No fucks given !).
Anyway, if you're off to game, stay safe (& dry if poss), and enjoy xx |

1-3 at The Cottage.
Despite the early lead, Fulham seemed a notch or two below par all round, which you can't afford to be against a decent side. Turning point was Fulham missing a penalty which would have put them 2-1, but it was so poorly struck it may as well have been a backpass. Villa SHOULD have been in front at half time, and certainly had better of second half. Better team definitely took home the points. |

0-1 FT, Brentford had majority of play, but it was a pass too many/a touch too many in front of goal and Derby's strong start to 2nd half saw them miss a penalty before taking lead. Derby keeper also deserved his clean sheet.

Lots of lovely Football League action over next couple of nights. Give me Championship over Champions League !
I'm a division lower tonight though, off to the East End to see an Orient team who seem to be underperforming so far this season (but that's to be expected on the bottom two divisions where you have to rely to an extent on Prem/Champ youngsters coming out on loan). Courtesy of taking out a Membership which gives access to discounted tickets, it's £22 in the East (or Old if you know Brisbane Road) Stand.
Anyone else on their travels tonight ? |

Game of decidedly ropey quality in first half, but a well delivered free kick midway through second half superbly nodded in by Dan Happe was enough to give Orient a much needed & well deserved 1-0 win |

"2-2 away at maidenhead coming back from 2-0 should of won it at the end down a place but still in the playoffs onward to Dagenham at home Saturday "
And only six points off the top. All very competitive this season.
Have to be honest and say National League needs a big revamp. When the North/South divisions were brought in twenty years ago, they were much needed. Whole set up now needs to be expanded to eighty clubs, four divisions of 20, a Premier, and then North/Midlands/South feeder divisions. It would give more flexibility for clubs to move between North/Mids, Mids/South where necessary. It's ridiculous that clubs like Oxford City are in North Div. this season.
At end of season, the three regional champions directly replace teams 18, 19 and 20, while 17th place club go into a mini league with the three runners-up. Whoever wins that after six games (ie home/away with other three teams) goes or stays up.
Brainteaser for you - the Alliance League was formed in 1979. Oldham are one of SEVEN clubs who have played at all four levels of professional football and the Conference/National League. Can you name the other six ? (A clue - Wimbledon/AFC Wimbledon is NOT one of them as technically two different clubs, old Wimbledon were elected from Southern League in 1977) |

Carlisle, Luton, Oxford, Notts County, Grimsby, Orient.
How did I do? (Not looked this up, all off the top of my head. Not 100% on Grimsby - think they were top flight pre 1939)."
Spot on !!! Grimsby were relegated out of Div. 1 (along with Brentford) at end of first post-war season, 1946-47.
Anyway, currently on Jubilee Line heading back from The Den, deserved 1-0 win for Millwall. |

"A good win for my home team tonight 😁"
Am I right in thinking Sunderland ? Going well at the top, but it's a brutal slog of a division. Gotta love the Championship, FAR more unpredictable & exciting than the Prem |

At Stevenage this evening, Spurs U21 v Reading U21 (....my 50th game of season !). Currently 1-1.
Double header tomorrow. Watford v. Blackburn is one of the 12.30 starts, and gives me opportunity to pop to a local non-league game (Harefield Utd, which is lowest level I'll look at) at 3pm |

Been to Harefield a couple of times with AUFC, and seen our boy play there many years ago. Who are they playing?

Ardley United. As long as there's not too much added time at Watford I should get over for kick off or thereabouts
Anyway, for anyone on their travels today, have safe trip & enjoyable day. |

A somewhat quieter week ahead, but got to another Professional Development League game this evening - Brentford 'B' 4, QPR U21 1.
At the G-Tech tomorrow evening for their League Cup tie with Sheff Wed, tickets for which were just £15. Fair play to Brentford, they've made very good use of a compact site and built a very tidy new stadium. |

Just back from last game of the month.
Brentford wasted enough chances to wrap the game up by half-time, but gifted Sheff Wed an equaliser who were then a little unfortunate not to snatch a win. Last Sheff Wed penalty taker bottled it to give Brentford a 5-4 pens win after an entertaining 1-1 draw |
