"The spooky season is upon us, so what creepy, scary or haunting books would you recommend.
PS.Nothing by Stephen king, nor Shelley or Stoker !!
"
What’s your particular flavour of horror?
The weird stuff? The bloody? The psychological? A little bit cosy? |

I've read loads, just after authors so I can have a quick review of their works. |

I’d also rate Ramsey Campbell, especially his short stories.
Laird Barron is a favourite, as is Robert Aickman. Catriona Ward writes a great scare. |

"The Rats series by James Herbert... I have read it twice already, with a very long time in between and am looking to read it again once I have finished the books I am reading "
I've read lots of Herbert's books, anyone wanting to try horror or the supernatural should start with his. |

I actually like James Herbert alongside the horror some of his earlier books had lurid sex scenes as well
Dennis Wheatley, a few of his like The Devil Rides Out and The Satanist. Hammer Films often took his books and a made a decent film or two.

"I read a book about an entity called Enoch when I was a teenager, that I felt was quite scary.
I've tried to find it since but no amount of Googling has helped me find it."
Doesn't ring a bell, but it's the sort of book that would appeal to me. |

Is Enoch invisible and does he ride on the head of the protagonist and bite and claw his scalp to make him commit murders ? |

Yes, I think that's it. At the end I think it/he travels to someone else. |

"Check out C.William Giles... see what you think xx
The darkness of strangers looks good. Looks like a cheap read as well, so win win. Thanks"
You're welcome, he was a friend of mine... sadly passed away a few years ago 😢 |

Love Bram … check out Dacre Stoker’s (great grand nephew of Bram) Dracul…. It’s a precursor to Brams Dracula - very good and very atmospheric

David Shelton: Thirteen chairs
Richard Laymon: One rainy night
Catriona Ward: Last house on needless st.
The Darkness of strangers, is still to be purchased on my kindle.

Try a google for " The Atlantic A Sea Story " , it'll take you to a well written article in The Atlantic about the truly awful sinking of the MS Estonia ship. I think it's the scariest thing I have ever read. |

Thanks for this suggestion, a very traumatic tale, it felt like I was aboard the vessel. A very well written article. |

Clive Barker - Weaveworld is also a good fantasy / horror
There are also the psychological horror Flowers in the Attic series by V.C. Andrews
And a South Korean horror trilogy : The Vegetarian by Han Kang gets seriously under your skin!

My go to stories for Spooky Season -
The Woman in Black - Susan Hill
Hell House - Richard Matheson
Whilst M.R.James is considered the master of the ghost story and worthy finding a 'best of' his stories, I'd recommend E.F.Benson and his short stories. His short story, "In The Tower" is a proper chiller. |

Martyr - B. K. Evensong

Short story - I Have No Mouth and I must scream by Harlan Ellison"
I've read woman in black and I love Korean /Asian cinema , so I've seen battle royale and the Ring .
