24 years on from hillsborough, 96 fans went to a football game and never came home, and still awaiting justice - lets hope by next year justice has been served.

Don't know whether it is or not but yeah RIP and justice hopefully soon for the families - although justice is not the right word - I guess closure might be a better one

My understanding is that former civil servants who have retired cannot be tried for misdemeanours incurred whilst they were in office. 'Justice' in the case of Hillsborough will only ever amount to the govt of today (whoever it is) admitting the govt then had got some things wrong.

Today is the 24th Anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster which resulted in the deaths of 96 men, women and children. This will be the first service since the truth was revealed by The Prime Minister and the chair of The Hillsborough Independent Panel back in September and while today remains a day of remembrance, it is the first time that people will attend knowing that the truth is finally out there, that people in authority are finally making the wheels of justice turn and that new inquests are on the horizon following the quashing of the previous inquests finding in the High Court back in December.

I attended the first service back on Easter Sunday 1990, but since then I have always felt uncomfortable about going, preferring to reflect on the day in private and in latter years watching the service via the internet on the Liverpool FC website. I was uncomfortable as a survivor feeling I was attending something that was for the families, but over the last few years I've been able to bring Hillsborough more into the open rather than the pidgeon hole I kept it in for many years in my mind. It was shocking, surprising and comforting all at the same time to reread my witness statement and even more so to read for the first time the statements of my two friends, both of whom survived, via the HIP website.

Today, I would simply say to anyone who reads this post, and it doesn't matter which club you support as it could have been any clubs supporters, it doesn't matter if you have no interest in sport at all but as you say goodbye to your loved ones today, you know and expect that they'll come back home safe and sound. On 15th April 1989, 96 men, women and children died and 100's of others suffered physical or mental injury which have lasted the rest of thier lives.

If you get the chance at 3.06pm today, pause for one minute to remember the victims of Hillsborough, and at whatever time today give your kids, hubby, wife, partner, Mum, Dad etc a hug and remind them you love them and be grateful that whatever they get up too today and indeed in the weeks and months to come, be grateful that they are there to share your life.

An amazing service of remembrance was held at Anfield this afternoon attended as usual by 1000's.

Along with the always moving reading out of the names were a reading by John Henry whom as Liverpools owner attended the service for the first time.

Standing out for me though was a very moving speech by Bill Kenwright, chairman and owner of Everton FC. Immediatly after the HIP report was produced, Kenwright personally took responsibilty for the moving tribute at Everton in September which led to the Xmas No 1 Ne's my Brother song by The Justice Collective, today he recounted how he'd been at Villa Park on that afternoon, just as an ordinary fan and the impact Hillsborough had on him. A truely extrodinary recollection by a man who if cut open would bleed blue blood and yet so compassionate to Liverpool the club and the city.

Margerat Aspinall whom is the chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group also gave a moving speech thanking many, many people while steadfastly appealing for the IPCC to do it's job while not leaving a stone unturned in the search for justice and accountability.

FAB forums allow many things to be posted, a lot to do with swinging ofcourse but also to cover pertinent news items. Hillsborough is a hugely important subject not only because of the disaster itself, but because of the injustice carried out by the institutions and individuals over the last 24 years. Many of us wish that Hillsborough could have been taken off the front pages many years ago, and that the families and survivors could have been given the justice they so deserve.

Finally Wishy, I have no qualms about starting or posting again in the 25th Anniversary thread. I'd respect anyone whom wishes to post about other disasters whether football related or not in order to remind people who use these threads about events such as Munich, Lockerbie or Zeebrugge because such threads provide an education aswell as some comfort for people.

It still amazes me that it's taken so long for justice.

For 24 years a lot of the country have probably wondered why Liverpool fans still go on about it.

For 24 years a lot of people have lied to cover their own backsides and now they are being exposed for what they are.

The people responsible will never get the justice that they deserve and some have gone to the grave knowing that they could have righted wrongs but didn't.

Justice for me will be when the families of the 96 finally get closure and the full truth finally comes out.

Gone but never forgotten.

Thanks everyone who has responded to this thread with empathy, and care for the families of the 96.

Anyone else, speaking ill of the dead is shocking and uncalled for, whichever allegiance you have for football, noone deserves to die by just attending a game. Have a little compassion - everyone else is admitting now that dreadful mistakes were made that day.

1000s of people went to enjoy watching their team, that day, 96 didn't return, many more have lived with the repurcusions of that day, whether they were their or because of the loss or injury of loved ones and friends.

I remember seeing the pictures on TV, not knowing what was going on, where it was or what teams fans were involved.

There but for the grace of god go any of us.

May eventually their souls rest in peace and their families get the justice they deserve.

To be fair he didn't blame the fans as you are making out. he blamed the police, the authorities, the ground etc first and foremost, and then made hes point about the fans. insensitive yes, but whatever the truth, lots of people lost there lives and it was a tragedy.

the sad and inevitable facts which some cant seem to grasp or wish to ignore for whatever reason is that this was not the first time there had been safety issue's at that and other grounds in this and other countries..

fans were treated as no better than cattle, rammed in by groundstaff and the Police into stadiums by and large not fit for purpose..

what we have today and expect regarding maintenace of facilities and infrastructure, safety systems and procedures for dealing with incidents were often untested and on the hoof..

what happened 24 yrs ago could have happened to any teams fans on that day in that place and at that time..

As much as time is a great healer, it is also a great thief. In the event of those 24 years of lies, betrayal, deceit and widescale defamation and ridicule of an people looking for justice, time snatches away those that kept justice from the 96 all these years.

We'll pay to feed Thatcher to the worms, knowing that she feared justice the most when she was most frail and unable to lie anymore.

Broke my heart seeing Anne Williams (one mum who lost her boy) having fought for Justice for almost 24 years, having to fight against cancer.

RIP 96 You and your families will never walk alone.

Look it up if you dont know about what TRULY happened on that fateful day. Do not believe the lies or coverups lije some still do, which personally I feel is a crying shame, but will just shake my head at those and move on. As for those who matter acknowledge the truth and the lack of justice for 96 souls (ALL NOT JUST FOOTBALL FANS BTW) who lost their lives that day.

May they get justice so they can rest in peace once and for all.
