Disability "tax"

When we say "tax", we don't just mean actually monetary costs. We mean the allllllll the extra admin and faff and obstacles that come with disability.
So, I had surgery on my hand/wrist and my left hand is currently out of action. For most people, that would be a bit annoying but it means I can't propel my manual wheelchair really at all. I'm managing one handed (and doing a lot of circles) on the hard floors at home but can't manage the bedroom carpet.
Were I able bodied, I'd have gone straight back to work. But I can't even leave the house, let alone get to a bus stop or railway station.
To go on the train in a mobility device, you have to pre-book assistance at least 48h ahead and it's not guaranteed. More disability "tax".
My surgery was short notice (less than 24h notice) so no time to make arrangements. Mobility scooters are not allowed on many trains and they have big turning circles so I don't think hiring one has any merit. I've paid to hire an electric chair for a few weeks, meant to arrive today but no. The delivery firm cancelled with no rearranged date. I'm at the mercy of Parcelforce. It needs to be lightweight and foldable into a car boot because I might need to take taxis or get lifts. Such devices are not readily available to hire and whatever I hire, it won't be custom sized for me and probably won't fit my pressure relieving cushion so I risk aggravating my pre existing disability. Yay.
Wheelchair accessible taxis round here? Having a laugh. Non existent.
So. Just by having a very minor day case wrist/hand surgery, I'm completely stranded and contemplating spending shit loads more money on powered attachments for my manual chair because they're lightweight. I'm going to need the other hand doing at some point so.....
Struggling to get the dressing/wound care stuff done at a place I can access. I can't go to a clinic 6 miles away right now, but apparently it's "not usual" for anyone to come to the house and I can't do it with the practice nurse at the GP 0.5 miles away. I have no idea how I'm supposed to get to this clinic.
I'm soooooooooo bored.
I'm regretting having the surgery so much. I should have said no to the cancellation appointment and waited till it could be planned better.
It feels ridiculous that such minor surgery results in such issues just because I have a wonky leg. I'm possibly going to be off work for no other reason other than the fact I can't leave the house, not because I'm unfit to work

A friend is experiencing similar at the moment and every day's a fight to just stay static. Moving forward seems impossible for them and nobody actually gives a damn except to make a sympathetic face and advise contacting various numbers. 🤷♀️ |

Sorry Mrs KC, I feel for you. Completely unable to come up with a spikey retort - unless of course it is to say you shouldnt live in a god-for-saken part of the country (though even TfL in London would probably not be of any use to you in your current situation).

Paralympics was great! I did make a post about it and the accessibility.
Didn't try the Metro.
Buses brilliant.
Tickets for wheelchair access plus companion sketchy and stupidly organised.
Venues good once you got a ticket/got in.
Everyone helpful and friendly.
Eurostar brilliant.

Ugh it’s a nightmare and so discriminatory so much of the time.
My friend had to go to hospital as an emergency late last year (she was having a miscarriage) and she uses a wheeelchair most of the time. She happened to be ambulatory at the point of the paramedics wanting to get her to the ambulance but she asked them to bring her chair too but they refused saying they couldn’t stow it safely onboard.
I find this incredulous but I’ve seen the final response from the Trust and it’s documented.
Pretty hefty tax for a disabled wheelchair user to not be able to bring their mobility device with them! Crazy world!

This almost happened to me in the hospital transport to the operation itself. They claimed they couldn't strap my own chair down and that I'd have to go in their basic chair and leave mine behind. I refused. After several phone calls and faffing, they magically managed to strap mine in. The guy who came to take me home nearly refused outright to even try, claiming my chair wasn't suitable (false). The vehicle was identical to all the wheelchair accessible taxis in Paris which I'd been strapped into very successfully. I had to argue with them about even taking me off the ward to try.

One thing I have learned, is that those who have to manage a disability invariably have to manage it twice.

Once for themselves

And once again for those around them.
.
And this is pretty constant and exhausting, especially when dealing with new and unknown situations, people and/or places.
.
I’ve always said, the world should be designed for disabled needs first because it will then be accessible for able folks by default.
.
A 2021/2022 Family Resources Survey found :

There are 16 million disabled people in the UK.
.
-11% of children are disabled
-23% of working age adults are disabled
-45% of pension age adults are disabled
.
That’s approximately :
.
1 in 10 children are disabled
1 in 4 non-pension age adults are disabled
1 in 2 pensioners are disabled
.
But it’s not just the built environment that needs disabled design from the ground up, it’s services, policies, processes, operations, and so much more.
.
The biggest hurdle of all however is people.
.
And I don’t want to paint the abled as the “bad guys” in this scenario. They are not.
.
But they are a hurdle to overcome.
.
Another thing to manage. Another battle around the next corner. Another obstruction. Another “disabling element” to someone’s existing disability. In some cases, an extension of that disability. A “compounding” of that disability.
.
I’ll repeat again, they are not the “bad guys”. Many are so helpful and accommodating and go the extra mile. They just “get it”.
.
Sadly, not all understand or are cognisant of disabilities. They live in an abled world that works for them, so their perception of other’s tribulations is vague if even noticed at all.

I’m sorry KC you have experienced such difficulties with your current (and past) struggles. I really wish the world and people/policies/places was built better to be as equitable to you as it is for everyone else. |

It is a little excessive to expect that transport and buildings and society should make things in any way helpful towards the needs of the disabled. After all, disability is such a new phenomenon, it's only been around since the start of time. And it's just a mere fifty or sixty years since we've had any legislation about providing access, it's not as if there have been any new buildings or vehicles designed during that period. How can architects and designers and public or private concerns possibly be aware that not everybody has fully working arms and legs, there are just no guideline documents that might explain what could be needed. No disabled person is ever seen on the television, it's just a one in a billion. There isn't anybody that ever gets old and infirm, or has accidents, or is born with a less than perfectly working body, so it would be a total waste to even think about ramps, or self-opening doors, or vehicles that can be used without the full complement of limbs, or...
(end of sarcasm)
It's fucking appalling that this country, supposedly a civilised and intelligent place, the 6th most wealthy in the world, should be an utter shithole for anybody that is less than perfectly capable. There is zero joined up thought, no enforcement of what legislation does exist, nobody with authority that ever takes responsibility to improve matters. I despair at humanity often, this subject is just one more case that helps cement my low opinion of mankind. |

I've experienced a wheelchair user (on many occasions) go to a restaurant (having explained to them in advance they would like an accessible table), and yet seen an utter piss and panic when they do arrive. Serving staff looking dumbfounded. Taken to a table. Staff stand there looking at w/c user. w/c user looking at the chairs in the way. Staff still standing there looking clueless. Perhaps expecting w/c user to magically levitate their w/c and park it on top of the obstructing chairs. |

Disability is shit. No two ways about it.
I (Mr) lost a leg relatively recently. This has meant so many changes to my life. I’m lucky, as much as you can say that, as it doesn’t stop me driving an automatic car. I have on occasion had to resort back to using a wheelchair, an absolute nightmare around here too.
The extra money it costs being disabled is crazy. But the main thing for me is the extra time everything takes.
It truly is shit.
So to the OP, sorry you are being affected so badly just now. You are having.to eat more of the shit sandwich that disability is. We feel for you and empathise. One day at a time though. |

I hope your amputation has been as successful as it could be and that your stump is healing or has healed well. I know from friends how much of a pain stump healing can be.
You are so accurate in everything you say. The extra time tax is huge, nothing is straightforward and the amount of pre planning that has to go into the most basic of trips is ridiculous. And even then, your carefully pre planned "accessible" trip can be thwarted by the lack of railway assistance or the lack of function of a lift or a poorly described venue that isn't actually accessible at all.
Apparently this electric chair will come later today so this will be another learning curve for me. Fuck knows how I'll open doors at work, for example, because I can't pull with my left but will need the right to operate the chair controls. It's going to be fun. Not. |

It’s gone amazingly well thanks. To the point, even though it has been an absolute shit show of 18 months, I describe myself as lucky every day.
The electric chairs are amazing, I’ve had a shot of one and it really helped to get around.
As far as accessibility goes, I’ve become a part-time campaigner. Calling out places that aren’t doing a good enough job, as well as those places that are. It doesn’t always go down well. The general public still don’t always ‘get it’, and to be fair I don’t think I did until it happened to me. Education, education, education is the way forward. |

It’s gone amazingly well thanks. To the point, even though it has been an absolute shit show of 18 months, I describe myself as lucky every day.
The electric chairs are amazing, I’ve had a shot of one and it really helped to get around.

Really pleased to hear it's gone as well as it could. I totally get what you're saying about accessibility and although my "campaigning" isn't formal, I'm the same. I try to offer objective feedback to places about how they could make small changes to improve access. Many places listen but then don't do anything and I've found some places actively disinterested, which is a shame.
I also agree that we can never know what it's like until you become disabled.
Any complacent people in the audience should know that being able is a temporary state. Disability is just one accident, illness etc. away. And no folks, there is pretty much no help. You will be left to work it out for yourself, including financially, because being disabled is very expensive. |

Wow. Some of that sounds very awkward in a not-really-anyone’s-fault sort of way; but the train thing is just inexcusable. Trains carry hundreds of people, and so should be ready for one/some of them to need assistance all of the time. |
