Mark Knopfler is one of my most favourite guitarist, his solo on Sultans of Swing is fantastic! Although I look at the video for "Money for Nothing" and how crap the graphics are nowadays haha |

Telegraph road. I worked out that at the right speed, I could listen, and of course play air guitar, drive from my work place to the local Tesco's and hear that guitar section right the way to the end |

"Brothers in arms and the mans too strong "
My two favourite dire strait tracks.
.
I swear upon my life
Your sister gave me diamonds
And I gave them to your wife.
.
Someday you'll return
To your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms.

Kitty walked down the aisle to Romeo and Juliet. They are my favourite band, although each album has certain great tracks in my opinion the best album for complete content had to be making movies. An album of love songs in different contexts, my favourite being tunnel of love closely followed by hand in hand which was our exit song at our wedding. |

Why would you "loathe" them.
Not liking I can understand. Not to your taste also. Not your type of music perhaps. But why loathe.
Why loathe anyone with undoubted talent. And the ability to write songs that mean something to people.
Why loathe people that create....not replicate or copy.
Is it simply because they became on if the biggest bands in the world....
And for a change try youtubing "I'm the fool" by Mark Knopler...
Or for the best ever knees up....try the live version of Going Home the theme from Local Hero
Loathe....never.. |

They are one of the very best and most talented bands ever from the UK. Mark Knopfler was the first musician to make me want to pick up the guitar.
For anyone to loathe them doesn't merit a response. If you dont like the music it's not your loss but it's not mine either lol |

"We think knopfler is a great guitarist... And whilst not liking some of his later stuff(lacking drama).....
Some of the tracks mentioned are absolutely epic..."
I do agree with you and I sympathise for Knopfler at the same time, he's probably left no stone unturned for himself - like Clapton (google the picture for his new album 'Old Sock', he doesnt even care anymore).
I checked some of Knopfler's new stuff and it was like his weaker old stuff before Straits split up. 'Cleaning My Gun' was a decent track though. |

'Private Investigations' was the track which got my attention, as it was so different to anything else in the singles chart at the time.
But I much prefer the kind of 'back to basics' stuff that Mark Knopfler is doing now, |

I love Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler has a beautiful guitar tone.
I can't count the number of bands I was asked to join when I was a kid because I could play the solo to Sultans Of Swing... |

For us it's Tunnel of Love and Going Home, having said that we will listen to and enjoy all Dire Straits songs and music.
Have a listen to Mark Knopfler's Down with Bonaparte for something different if you haven't already done so. |

Anyone else think that "Dire Straits" and "Chris Rea" should get together and call themselves "Dire/Rea"?"
Funny you mention that, me and my brother liked both in the late 80's and used to say that joke repeatedly to anyone that hadnt heard it ten times already lol |

Weird one for me.
They were the first band I ever saw live - I was 16 around the time of Brothers in Arms. Played Alchemy Live to death for about three years around that time.
I never thought BiA was that good even back then when they were my favourite band - i remember the thrill of getting the cassette when it came out and being really disappointed. Yeah, the title track is very atmospheric, but I always hated So Far Away, Walk of Life and, yep, Money for Nothing.
Then got into loads of other types of music and thought they were tedious beyond for 25 years. Although I knew Knopfler was a great guitar player, I got bored with the whole guitar wizard thing (and I used to teach guitar!)
Had a slight urge to play the early stuff again in recent times and must dig out my Alchemy cassettes.
Will steer clear of BiA though - can't see me changing my mind on that one!
Funny thing, music and changing tastes!

Brothers In Arms is still a great album.
'Sultans of Swing' on Alchemy Live is fucking awesome.
Saw them live on the On Every Street tour, and was a bit disappointed. |

Great Band, love just about all their songs.
I saw the band with Charles and Diana (not sitting next to them, but they were fairly close by, Diana getting right into it) at Wembley arena in 1984. This was where Sting came on stage to sing on I want my MTV.
Great show !!!

I've been revisiting their discography this last week. Although there's plenty of filler, their classics are classics for a reason.
I'm being thoroughly earwormed by 'Tunnel of Love' at the moment. |
