What motivates you to go to the gym?

Started at the gym with a friend a couple month ago, as I needed the additional motivation.
Just wondering what motivates people to go to the gym (or other fitness routine), and how often do you do it? |

That I feel physically and mentally better for it. When it's part of my weekly routine it's easier to motivate myself. Also avoiding the DOMS you get after having a break . I go twice a week and 3 times when I can fit it in. |

I like bad food so if I don’t exercise I get fat. I hate the gym and I’m not really a fan of swimming, and I’m currently injured so can’t run. Sadly it has to be swimming but in a groove and go three times a week.
It is working though. |

That “feel good” feeling after a session is done mostly. Also gives me a sense of accomplishment before the day has even begun as I train early mornings…
I go to the gym on average 4-5 times a week depending on my schedule |

What actually motivates me though is wanting to hit that magic combo of looking and feeling good. It helps my mental health and I used to be really fat. I'm roughly the same weight I was at my heaviest but I'm not as squishy.
I go 4x a week now with 2 upper days and 2 lower days. It's either that or I do 3 full body days. |

I go 5 times a week and I guess what keeps me motivated is seeing the results in the mirror and and also progressing in various lifts that makes me feel accomplished |

"I don't rely on motivation as it can be fleeting.
Regular gym going is a habit and it's one I love. Its also underpinned by tangible goals.
Good luck on your fitness journey OP. " I can tell you're special just from this message |

I trained at home most the time I trained only joined a gym a few years back to get a bit of a social life after becoming single, made some great friends in thst time, have gotten numerous jobs through the gym also, been invited on holiday ect all lovely interactions I wouldn’t have had if not been at the gym

There can be motivation found from the dickheads though. Like having better strength gains than the random man offering me unsolicited advice and "correcting" my personal trainer and physiotherapist designed exercise programme . |

"What motivates you to go to the gym?"
Nothing. There were a number of years when I went every working day, but some idiot changed my gym into AbFab & Kestrel. So replaced gym with cycling and cannot justify the expense of gyms in the area. |

I go to the gym 5 times a week, for me it’s become a routine that keeps me feeling fit and it’s great for your mental health. It also teaches you discipline and makes you want to be a healthier person in general. Meeting some amazing people makes it a lot of fun too. |

I have to admit, I started doing Pilates this year and it's something I really have to find motivation for because I hate how inflexible I feel during it, but keep going as it does generally help me |

3 to 4 times a week. I do it to ward off weight gain, maintain strength, and I like how it makes me feel afterwards. I’ve been going regularly now for a couple of years and I definitely feel better for it.
Any exercise would probably have a similar effect if done regularly and intensely enough. But I find the gym gives me a space where I can focus on working out and the routine of going helps me keep it up over time. (When I say keep it uo, I mean keeping exercise up, never had an issue keeping anything else up! Or maybe that’s because of the gym!??). |

It's funny because if they never seem to just be slightly wrong, always monumentally so . I had a guy telling me I needed to stretch my hamstrings more. I can put my hands flat on the floor without bending me knees, I think they're flexible enough . |

Motivation.
I'm a real believer in looking after one's self otherwise your body just waste away. Its good for mental health and to destress. Having nice proportions means your clothes look great on your especially a suit.
Other benefits look the eye candy in the gyms and have total respect for all spapes who are trying to look after themselves.
I try and visit about 3-6 times a week.
If gym is not for you try a different sport. Football, swimming, running club. Boxing, martial arts or Mix it up but Just some something. |

"Just wondering what motivates people to go to the gym (or other fitness routine), and how often do you do it?"
I'm someone who can't just go and train. I need a reason to go. It used to be playing sports and now I do Tough Mudders.
That way I have goal, it shapes my training and there is a sense of achievement.
Another hand tip I got from someone else who also suffers with depression is looking at classes.
Training on your own is extra mental load and can take serious discipline.
Whereas with classes, you just rock up in your gear, with your towel and water bottle and someone tells you what to do.
And if you are going to a class consistently you will meet people and make friends
Hope that helps |

Probably habit now. Bit of vanity and not wanting to be completely squishy (though never completely happy, so not sure how that's working out for me).
Wholesome, holier-than-thou me would also say something about feeling better for it. I know I do, and I'm annoyed at myself if I miss a session, even if I don't care to admit it.
I go 4 times a week and play football another night. |

Maybe the added incentive and motivation to push myself harder then? Never a bad thing that |

Hubby goes at least once a day, every day. Sometimes more. Says it's the one place he can simply empty his head and concentrate just on that
I go three times a week (or try to....)plus have a dance studio at home for ballet and pole.
I think my reasons are slightly different and it involves an unhealthy addiction to chips .... |

Nothing against gyms but I used to live opposite one until it closed and it had no dedicated car park. It was always bemusing seeing everybody turn up morning or evening in the car to then play tetris trying to get as close as possible to the entrance occasionally blocking the road and a screaming row included over a precious spot. Some of these people lived a few miles away I overheard. It was boggling why they never walked/cycled for the added exercise and never saw the irony. |

"absolutely nothing ."
Ditto.
As an aside, we see so many posts about gym bodies on here nowadays that I am wondering if this is the craze which will ultimately replace getting tattooed among those who seek to be different but end up similar.
A bit of a proletarian bonding thing, perhaps, as well as being a money spinner. |

My motivations... Got diagnosed with high blood pressure 6 months ago (in the 190/120 range), put on medication daily and i hate taking tablets for anything, even headaches.. Joined the gym for cardio, changed my diet.. Yesterday I tested 125/62, back in the green) and lost 15kg since starting (calories intake currently at around 1000 a day). Go to the gym at least 4 times a week for a solid hours cardio.. And although I come out like I've just stepped out the bath without a towel, I love how better I feel. |

I drive to the gym every single time and I give no fucks what anyone else thinks. I get priority parking, if the ableds are feeling generous ♿💪🏻 |

2 - 4 times a week, because I enjoy the personal challenge, feeling good whilst and after exercising, I get satisfaction from my results, I know I'm healthier, stronger and have many benefits from it. And I love the social aspects and seeing the men. |

I used to be a pretty good distance runner.
Ran for the ARMY and at county level before joining up, but came out of the army in 2005, 4 weeks later I broke my leg in 3 places and almost lost it. Was told I’d never run again.
That spurred me on to target marathons and did my first in 2012. Ended up running 7 in total and achieved good for age times.
Unfortunately I got another bad injury in 2015 and since then I’ve struggled to motivate myself. But I started back 2 weeks ago at the gym, so my motivation is to get back running and lose weight!
Just focus, don’t set goals that aren’t achievable and keep at it |

Usually 4-5 times a week but have been known to do more. My diets been awful the last few months so this level of exercise had helped me maintain.
I’ve learned as you get older if you don’t use it you’ll lose it. Everyday you’re not putting in work you’re going backwards.
Was probably at my peak fitness this time last year and boy did I notice the stamina increase in the bedroom |

Road cycling does it all for me… if I wanted to look more gladiator and less racing snake the gym might add another dimension but I just don’t get the gym culture or the shite music they play in them! 😂 |

I've been going to the gym for the last year or so, twice a week, having previously rarely ever gone.
Motivation is that I want to live a relatively pain free maturity. I realise after seeing my best friend in pain due to 5 years of cancer treatment that I better get my act together. I'm still learning, I still have a belly, but bigger muscles, my fwb loves them.
I have to rearrange my visits to do exercise that gets rid of the belly. I also need change in diet. Any advice appreciated. |

I don't want to get fat, the wrong side of 40 now and see my friends start to carry their beer belly more an more.
I honestly enjoy the gym, I have met loads of great people since joining. Get involved with your local gym if you do go. It can be a social thing too.
I don't go anywhere near as much as I should but it does allow me to indulge when I feel like it knowing I can burn it all off at the gym, there are several better ways to burn calories though |

Never drank beer so no belly and never been to a gym (but went swimming, with trunks on, twice a week until lock down and as often as possible at naturist venues).
Saved a fortune on not buying beer or gym entry! |

Don’t even know what motivates me anymore now 😅. Been going so long it’s just part of my lifestyle now. Wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I didn’t go.
But when I started I went cause I knew I could look & feel better in myself if I was more muscular 😊 and I do. |

For me now it’s getting back into climbing and the lady I’m climbing with will be like a whippet up the wall.
Yet since I’ve not climbed for so long I’ll be like a docile sloth 😂
So it’s drop some kgs and build the upper strength in preparation for some amazing times 😁 |

I’ve literally just come home from my first gym session in two years. My motivation was twofold. Firstly, I’ve got a football tournament in Alicante at the beginning of November so I want to improve my aerobic fitness for that.
Secondly, seeing some of the fit bodies on women around my age on dating apps, has made me realise I need to up my game a bit - I can’t just rely on being tall and ridiculously handsome. |
