Just wondering, I am blind and am on my second guide dog. My first, lived to a healthy 17 years and I’m now on my second which I’ve had for 8 1/2 years, he is approaching 10.
My question is, has anyone lost a pet to cancer as unfortunately my second has cancer now and probably a couple of weeks to live, his harness has been hung up and left to enjoy what time he has left. What were your feelings when they died as this is the first that I may have to put down? |

I have put 2 elderly cats down. In both cases I stayed with them as the died so they wouldn't go alone. I felt I owed to them. You are doing a great kindness which not every owner is brave enough to do. |

I'm very sorry to hear about your dog. You're doing the best thing for him and I hope the two of you can spend some quality time together in the next few weeks.
We've had to take two of our cats on their final journey. It's sad, extremely so. We talk about them a lot still and have good memories.

Feel your loss, I lost my two dogs last April due to old age, had to have them put to sleep and the vet asked me which one first I was heart broken, but unfortunately, no one ever feels the same way as you do about your own dog. |

I no where your coming from op i had a Rottweiler she was my best friend she had trouble walking in her back leg.took her to the vet he said she had cancer in her leg.he said he could amputate her leg after the weekend.took her in on the monday morning and the cancer had spread.he said we could take her home but she might not live over a week or he could put her to sleep there and then.the hardest decision ive had to make was ten years ago and still upsets me now.i hope your ok op thinking of you |

That’s exactly the same type of thing, he was perfectly okay a couple of weeks ago and now tumours are popping up left right and centre, thanks for that anyway |

Lost a few over the years (6 if include family dogs as a child) never to cancer though most were put to sleep due to poor mobility causing them pain in old age, all hurt but worst was the Jack Russell I got for Christmas when I was 9 and the springer we had |

So sad and hard to bear. Any of us that had beloved pets can understand that. For you being a vonstant companion and supporting you can only be quote horrendous but the right thing to do not to let them suffer. You take good care of both of you  |

it seams to spread a lot quicker with a dog for some reason hope you get some more memories with yours op stay strong and if you ever want a chat op your not alone il chat with you. |

I'm so sorry to hear this op.
Yes a cat I had a few years ago who had a tumour in her throat.
I had her pts when her quality of life started to reduce,it was the kindest thing for her.
I was really sad when I did it, as I'd had her from being v young.
I was glad she wasn't suffering though. You will know when the time is right.

Really sorry to hear this. When someone at work lost their pet he took compassionate leave just as if it were a family member.
In fact they’ve often closer than some of the family and won’t let you down like some people do.

Yes, we lost our first rabbit who had to be put down on boxing day. Only discovered he had cancer/tumour right in his airway a week or so before at a routine checkup. No point in operating as they said chances of death on the table were extremely high due to his age and where the tumour was. Had to have him put down on boxing day as he was genuinely struggling to breathe. It was so sad and it's taken us months to get to a point we felt we could house another. We've now got two rabbits, one who is half deaf and blind in one eye, and hope he would approve of them although we still miss him so much. |

As it happens, today OP. Mine was diagnosed 5 months ago, given 1-6 months or 141 days, he lasted 152 I think. You know when it's time, though I don't think it was the cancer that had him, as he had other issues. One week ago he was walking fine, 3 days ago, he was wobbly falling unable to find his feet, to the next being straight legged, not knowing which way was forward. His fight was over.
Radio/Chemotherapy would have stole his energy and any good months he had left, he wouldn't have been the same dog. Money wasn't the concern it's the fact mri's are needed before and after, meaning anaesthetics, which when you are needing minimum 6 high doses is quite a lot, any no guaranteed outcome. You'll know when he needs your help. My best. |

Humongous feelings of guilt OP. The "what if" question still plays heavily on my mind. I know I did the right thing for him, but it will always feel like the wrong thing for me. Its been a few years now and as each year passes, the pain dulls a little more. Being loved unconditionally and having that love taken away from me, by me, Is the hardest thing I've ever been through.

It's the worst feeling ever. Had a 14yr old Labrador that had bladder cancer. Because of the cancer he constantly felt like he needed to go for a wee. There was no way I was walking him into the vets to be put down. So had the vet come to my house. Less stress on the dog and just felt a nicer way for him to pass. Hardest decision to make but also the kindest. |

Last year we had to help three of our elderly cats on their final journey, all in the space of 6 months. I can tell you, it was awful!
When you have any sentient being in your life for a long time, they become more than pets, they become part of your family. We grieve for them the same way as we do our human family members. But when that time comes to say goodbye, it really is the final act of love that you can give them |

Op my heart gos out 2 u my friend .it never gets any easier my dog died in April he was only 7years old .iv also ad the heartbreak of avin 2 av my orther dog put 2 sleep on my birthday few years ago..only conserlation is uv loved each dog and they've loved u x |
