couple, us we him her.

Old fart, not tech savvy.

Issues with my router??

It's really slow it keeps dropping signal.

Watching TV downstairs is fine coz it's plugged into the router via ethernet.

But everything else is super slow.

We have a signal booster but frankly it doesn't help much.

So if I purchase a better quality router how do I connect it to receive my virgin media as it's all password protected?

Please use idiot language so I can understand

Watching TV upstairs is impossible due to constant buffering and lag

It may not even be your router. Have you restarted it? Have you contacted Virgin?

Picking a router and setup depends on what kind of connection you have.

Probably worth checking your connection and what's actually connected to it first.

You could be getting interference from a neighbor using the same channel.

Can you actually access the router interface? Username and password should be on the router.

Also, maybe download a wifi analyzer app to your phone that will show all SSID's and channels it can pick up

I know, but it could be a problem with the line, router settings or any other easy fix for them.

If you're not very technical just buying a new router could be a pain in the arse (they're not all plug and play).

Genuine questing (because it fixes a lot of problems): have you tried turning it off, leaving it for at least two minutes, and then turning it back on?

Failing that maybe a hard reboot could work

It's a two person household at any one Time the most connected is the TV and one phone or just two phones.

I generally connect to 5g on phone as it's quicker.

We are a terraced house lot's of strong networks in the available range.

I’m pretty rubbish at all that stuff to but if tv is ok then sound like a wireless issue. Check with a broadband speed checker that your actually getting the speed you pay for or that you’re at least getting there advertised speed in your area.

Yeah reset the router a few times.

But shouldn't have to keep doing so

OK. Look on the router. There will be an ip address to use to access the settings. There will also be a username and password. You will be best using a laptop for this.

You put the ip address (prob 192.168.1.254 or 192.168.1.1) into the place you type internet addresses on a web browser. This should bring up a login screen that you use the credentials on the router to log into.

But I'd download a wifi analyzer app to your phone first to see what it can see. On your phone, open up Google play and search "wifi analyzer" and grab one of those.

"Speak to Virgin first."

You'll be lucky to find a Virgin in here

Unplug the Router, reset with pin.

Switch back on.

If still rubbish call your Internet provider and say your gonna leave if they don't solve the issue of slow speed

a signal booster only boots the signal if it is in range to the router properly, imagine 2 spheres, they need to overlap to repeat the signal and even if they do overlap you are going to lose signal strength and speed.just how it is.you not on 100mbps are you? in this day n age that is just terrible.minimum should be 1000mbps-gigabit...if it was me i would trash the router the isp gave you and make your own or flash your router if the software is out there with openwrt

I imagine Virgin have some sort of speed guarantee? They have their own checker, but I'd use speedtest.net.

If you have their equipment which isn't working with no fault of yours, call them they should fix it?

I'm on sky and that's what they do. Hope you get sorted! Angel-ish

How old is your router? Some of what you are describing sounds like issues I see in aging routers - I know you don't want to call Virgin, but if it's an old router, a replacement could be a low cost solution (value in £s not hours or sanity).

Boosters come in many types, if it's connected wirelessly, make sure you put it in your home where your phone still has a good signal (I know this sounds strange but the booster can only boost from where the signal is good - like trying the repair a joist, you have to attach the new wood to a strong point in the old).

TP-Link and Netgear make good replacement routers - make sure you ask if it's Virgin compatable before you buy. To set it up, you will have to call Virgin and ask for passwords (sorry, you will need to speak to them at some point) - I find routers easier to setup with a computer than a phone, but this is my personal preference.

Good luck - if you're really stuck I'm happy for you to DM me

Is your router close to any other electrical device especially the TV if so move it away as this can course interference.

Don't buy a new router, Virgin taylor them specifically for your settings. They will replace it if you think it's not working. Have you tried moving the router to the highest point and the centre of the room, just to test the signal upstairs?

"Is your router close to any other electrical device especially the TV if so move it away as this can course interference. "

This ^ plus if your router is in a cupboard that may have an impact. There are 2 points you can lose your speed... 1 is to your router which virgin is responsible for and 2 out to all of your house. If the speed test to your router is OK then virgin will not do much.

Sounds like your upstairs tv is connected wirelessly.

Rule the TV out... Move it downstairs nd see if it performs the same or better. Could be your TV. Is it 4k or high res TV.? Try it on lol res and see if that helps. Stuff interferes with WiFi, make sure the router has as few obstacles as possible, placement is significant. Could of course be that you have a duff router and virgin should be able to fault find if you call them. If wired connection is OK that would imply signal to your house is OK.

Not read all the replies as i'm off out but did notice you are with Virgin.

Unplug all leads even the screw in one going into your router. Unplug all things like tv etc your virgin box everything. Leave all unconnected for five mins and then reattach.

Do a speed test on Virgin web site.

Phone virgin and get an engineer visit.

Just do what I suggested above.

You PAY Virgin..... let them come and sort it.

Even if it's not them they will identify the problem for you.

I had nothing but issues with virgin and it's crappy signal, I ended up switching after forever doing thee speed checks and trying to get through on the phone, they are a nightmare.

Sorry no help but everytime I phoned I was told unplug all, leave it for 30 seconds and plug all back in, not that it ever helped.

The guy above who said turn it off for 5 minutes ,that often cures problems but I've hat routers go wrong on me and had to replace them ,so maybe you have a faulty router .
