People don't value the time, the investment, the tools, that creating things requires. They expect that hand made, custom, will be comparable to a cheap piece of plastic/ plywood made in a factory by prison labour (or otherwise grossly underpaid or non-voluntary labour).

Ok? There are people making a killing doing this kind of thing. The fact you don't appreciate what they do is beside the point.

I appreciate the skill but reality is it's over priced for what it is and if your gullible enough to pay over inflated prices more fool you

Depends on what you're comparing it to. If you're comparing it to the cheap shit from factories in China, then I'd suggest it's not a fair comparison.

I don't pay these kinds of prices, but I have been upcycling my own furniture. If I added up my hourly rate at my job and the money I've spent on materials, this kind of stuff isn't that expensive in the grand scheme.

If you're not into it, then that's fine. It's no skin off my nose. But I'll never sneer at someone wanting to make a living with genuine talent.

Custom made stuff is only for the wealthy, stick to IKEA and Primark

I got a solid wood sideboard off Freecycle (hundreds new), sanded it, painted it, replaced the handles and hinges. Took fucking ages but far less than a custom piece.

I'm working on a similar job with a chest of drawers at the moment.

Agreed, it's the time taken to create it etc to make it unique. Impressive what some people make from stuff that was being thrown away.
