So I need to put exercise back into my routine. I cannot decide whether to do it at home just following videos (feel free to recommend stuff to me - DM if we can't advertise publicly) or go to the gym. I have a couple of options, including a gym not so far that I could pay for only when I use it. What do people prefer and why? Thank you!!

I prefer the gym as in my head it's somewhere I go to workout. When I train at home it's easy to get distracted and put it off.

That being said I think the most important thing is to do whichever you can do consistently. Find a routine that you enjoy and it's a lot easier.

Thanks for that. That's why I struggle. Home is convenient and that would mean I don't have to think about childcare but will I have the discipline?

It's hard. Start off small 30 minutes a few times a week and try a few different workouts. Least at home there's no pressure. For the record I think you look great already

I prefer the gym. Reasons:

-I don't have all the machines/equipment at home, that I can find at the gym. Also, I'm currently living in a share-house (for work), which makes it even less viable.

-Motivation-wise, I find it easier to go to a gym, it's like an "errand" that I can "complete". If I'm home, I just get complacent/lazy and not exercise, or end up doing house chores.

-Social aspect: I like going there and even without interacting, being amongst like-minded people. And there's always the option to have a word or exchange tips, if one were so inclined. It's also nice to have gym "buddies", to progress along with.

-Distractions: phone calls, telly, deliveries, people in the house, etc. None of that at the gym (I don't use my phone when at the gym, and usually leave it in my bag).

Yes they are all very good points. The social side would definitely be a bonus as I'm not from here so don't have many friends. I also like your point about equipment. I've been wanting to do a bit of step and I'd have to get one. Might be easier to go to a step class.

All over

I never liked gyms and certainly what they have become of lately, hubs for posers some of them ( apologies to those who do not partake in posing). I do lots of walking, some squats lately for keeping the bum in shape, and swimming whenever I can whether in pool or sea. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

I completely agree, a gym would be best but only if you use it. Making it a habit. Good habits are harder to keep than bad.

Or find something you enjoy which gives you the exercise you need. I found a rowing club which has helped me.

I (Mr) like gym classes.

If I go in the gym for a work out, I have to go late of a night when it’s empty, I can’t be doing with all the people posing or sat on a machine while playing on their phone.

I’ve been walking and running more this year, really enjoying that and it’s free.

Or try YT, search for something like, no equipment HIIT.

Statistics show us that 50% of all home gym equipment doesn't get used after the first month of ownership.... but then again most gym membership doesn't get used either.

Personally, my main exercise is cycling to work. I have a gym membership that I haven't used for a while, but my working hours are changing in a couple of weeks & that will give me a great opportunity to go to the gym before work twice a week

Personally, I rather go to a gym than train at home. They have much more & much better equipment that I can accommodate or afford.

Gym classes are a good idea. You have to book in advance and if you go regularly then you get to know people so it feels more supportive and social.

If you are looking to lose and keep weight off then it’s about healthy eating and lifestyle changes. Just going to the gym will likely not change too much unless your diet is good. It’s difficult but achievable.

Hi OP. Firstly, good luck in your journey, whatever you choose.

Personally I can’t stand gyms. My whole life I’ve been a long distance runner and cyclist, so I’m slim built and like the outdoors. However, cycling outside in this country between October and April is shit (and often in the ‘summer’ months too!) and I recently injured my ankles meaning I couldn’t run.

So, I joined a gym and took up rowing. To me it was the best compromise of cardio and strength. It exercises most of my body and there is always at least one machine available. I was in the gym for 20 minutes then home again and I found quick bursts like that more tolerable. Certainly better than aimlessly wandering round the gym doing reps with tiny weights and poor form.

I have always felt imposter syndrome when venturing into the free weights area with the big guns.

With rowing you can go as long/short and quick/slow as suits you. I started doing a very slow 1,000 metres and built up to a quick 5,000.

If you have some spare money and space you can pick up home rowing machines very reasonably. A few years ago I bought a second hand Concept 2 for just £100.

Good luck!!

When it comes to home vs gym the 2 main factors are motivation and equipment. As he can offer less on both counts, although gyms can be full of posers who just go to strut about in lycra Lol.

If you need a home PT I could assist as I'm Mancheater based and we could discuss what you are looking for I could assist with resistance training g to build definition and firm up muscle, cardio to aid weight loss and stretching which can be assisted as I would push your limbs, which feels great as well as massage

We used something called body project. Available on you tube and also as a subscription.

We didn't subscribe as they had plenty of 20-60 minute videos available for free.

Videos are targeted at different levels and include cardio and or resistance.

I lost over 2 stone with a combination of that and a change of diet.

Gym for the equipment and lack of disruption from family and children, but you can get PTs online nowadays so if you had what you need at home, you could get the accountability bit via an online PT.

I go to the gym next to work, which is easy. However, a recent set of changes means I'm not as happy with it

Due to health issues I had to avoid the gym. I started using the outdoor gyms (the ones you typically see in some parks). That suits me perfectly as I do exclusively upper body calisthenics (body weight) workouts. So lots of pull ups, chin ups, dips.

I now no longer need to worry about overcrowding, idiot behaviour and all the negative connotations that come with them. Oh and it’s free !!!!

Some really good points and advice. I was thinking about the gym near work but I'm more about the classes and they are much later than I finish. I'll look into an online PT.

Good luck on whatever you decide to do, I was in a similar quandary a couple of months back but I chose the gym route.

I started at puregym just over a month ago.. I've got a husky and walk her about 2km a day, I've seen no difference from doing this for the last 5yrs as its all stop start.

I pay membership as being Scottish, in my mind, I'm not writing off £27 a month by not going.. I make sure I go at least 4 times a week to get my moneys worth... Lol

I only use the treadmill at the gym and walk for 20 min sets on an incline at 4.3 to 5.5km per hr depending on the incline, I do this for an hour solid..

I've stopped takeaways and because I go late at night I've stopped eating before bed, I make sure I eat 3 small meat/egg/rice meals a day and skinny bars when I want a treat where before I'd eat greggs for breakfast, miss lunch then have a sandwich for tea.. Or miss meals totally.. In just over a month I've lost nearly 2 stone, face has thinned, belly has thinned and legs are getting back to the shape they were in my rugby days.

I'm enjoying it, don't feel like I've changed my lifestyle and I'd fully recommend getting out to train

Exercise isn't the best approach for losing weight. A lifestyle change that you will commit to is ideal, that likely focuses on your diet and may include other things. Exercise may help you to feel better and getting more in shape.

But I'd not recommend gym, unless you will stick with it. Starting small and having consistency is important

But get help for dietary changes plus exercise

We tried both over the years.

Its easy to make excuses to not use either.

But at home its much easier to find an excuse not pull out that bit of kit, or to just sit on the sofa and doom scroll.

The gym. You know your paying for it and that helps force you to make ise of it. Its also somewhere away from home to forget the daily slog and bust some stress away (why we also like to run).

I prefer the gym for lots of the reasons above. I like the act of going somewhere and the routine. I find it very easy to skip a home workout.

It also depends on what you want to do; I couldn't do the exercises I do at home as I don't have the weights or the set up. If I do anything at home, it'll be a HIIT workout from YouTube, which is fine, but very different to what I do at the gym routinely (but even then, I'd rather go to a circuit class or something at the gym than home as I just like the separation).

The main thing is to find something you enjoy and can be part of your routine...

I prefer the gym as it's a completely different headspace along with the wide range of equipment for me to use that keeps me interested and motivated.

However, some may prefer the convenience of working out at home and if that can align with your goals, then go for it!

Well I've just done another workout at home and had to change venue about 3 times as a little person was very disruptive! She tries to do it with me but then is small so has little space awareness. Anyway, I think I'm going to look at a mix of dance classes (because I love it) and try the gym that's on my route to work for classes and/or just exercising.

Thank you all for your thoughts, it's been really helpful!

I have a couple of options, including a gym not so far that I could pay for only when I use it. What do people prefer and why? Thank you!!"

For me personally I do weights at home and then swimming at the leisure centre. I tend to avoid the gym. People either hog the machine chatting so I can’t just get on, do my work out and go. At home though I can go through the reps without issue and also don’t have to worry about looking silly when I mess up or do a bad rep from muscle fatigue lol. I can just reset and carry on. It a lot simpler and quicker without adjusting weights, wipe downs, competing bad tunes, waiting time or glares from people for what ever reason they feel the need to. I do enjoy going swimming though, I walk there to warm up and warm down after, it’s easier on the joints and a good all round work out. I still come across some of the draw backs above but not many and I can just do my laps without any real issue. That just me though as I’m not very sociable when I exercise, unless someone speaks to me, I just want to get stuck in and do what I set out to do. For many though it’s a good social outlet and I understand that and its importance. Fitness can be great for peoples mental health in many ways as well as the physical benefits, just depends on your criteria for getting in shape. Is just the health benefits or that and a bit of social interaction with friends? I sadly don’t know many fitness videos but what type of fitness training are you after? x

If you want to lose weight, look at your food intake, weight loss is 85% diet, as for gyms, they can be soul destroying, you’ll get the usual juiced up crew grunting round the place, if you have the means, get a personal trainer, they usual go over your goals before you start and work with you accordingly to achieve that.

If that’s not an option, a circuit class would be my option, they’re usually quite busy with people on the same journey as yourself, it’s very social and you are well supported and support others as you work out over the various exercises💪🏻👍🏻
