Just like to point out that it's less than that the troops will be getting paid anyway. So any factor in price of soldiers is unfair. |

Russell Brand summed up my thoughts in a surprisingly thoughtful piece in The Guardian today...
'When I awoke today on LA time my phone was full of impertinent digital eulogies. It'd be disingenuous to omit that there were a fair number of ding-dong-style celebratory messages amidst the pensive reflections on the end of an era. Interestingly, one mate of mine, a proper leftie, in his heyday all Red Wedge and right-on punch-ups, was melancholy. "I thought I'd be overjoyed, but really it's just … another one bites the dust …" This demonstrates, I suppose, that if you opposed Thatcher's ideas it was likely because of their lack of compassion, which is really just a word for love. If love is something you cherish, it is hard to glean much joy from death, even in one's enemies.'
A few people I've heard over the last few days would do well to mull that one over...the OP included.
And, for the record, I'm about as far to the Left of the Right as it's possible to get

Well I really couldnt give a toss what you think ,ive got my opinion of thatcher and what she done to communities and familys in scotland and northern england and
Her policy was to destroy them so why should we pay to give her a cerimonial burial when the country is skint |

For once Russell has said something I agree with. My first reaction to the news was yes I was pleased but on reflection maybe this reaction was a bit of a knee jerk. |

There are many people in this country that have done wrong by us,from those in Royalty to those in our own families.
It gets my back up when it is only on the death bed of some people that people will go off on when they can't fight back and defend them selves but then i think that's us British all over.
As for paying for the funereal, i do agree some what that we shouldn't be paying for it, because there must be enough in the coffers to sort it out, but then when our Queen passes on, we will be paying again and i wonder how many of you will having the rant/tirade about that.
And it's only since Diana died that the royal family have become popular in a modern way!! |

The country is, supposedly, in such a bad way financially that the government is clawing money from the poorest in society and yet it can afford ten million to bury a wealthy woman.
All that tells me is to be very afraid as it is even more obvious the the bullingdon boys are worshipping at the altar of thatch and have more gems to come.
I look around the city i live in and her legacy is plain to see in so many areas anxious lives. Sheffield will not be stopping to be silent next Wednesday. |

There are a lot of youngsters with a lot to say about Margaret Thatcher.
I can take anyone's political _iews but a lot of the vile posts being started by others who obviously have no voice anywhere else sicken me to the core. I'm not a Thatcher lover or an admirer of most politicians what ever their colours but spouting words like , witch, burn , evil , cow etc and even delighting in someone's death says more about the poster than Mrs. Thatcher.
She was Prime Minister for 11 years from '79 to '90 approx. That ended some 23 years ago.
Even at my age I barely recall the facts or the feel of the time. I was 24 - 35 and busy rearing family and not particularly political.
I can't remember anything different then except the Falklands War.
Yes I recall the Miners Strikes and pitched battles but I also remember both sides to the story and i'm just about knowledgeable enough to know that coal takes billions of years to form and hours to burn. I don't recall much compassion from the miners for anyone else during these times either.
Anyone much younger than me gets their 'facts' from an oral or written history. That can range from a bitter bias to glowing rose tinted tome.
Never on these forums has the dictum ' A little learning is a dangerous thing' rang more true.
SERIOUSLY - the lack of ability for posters to think for themselves instead of regurgitating what they heard at the knee or read in a political comic worries me for the future.
What ever she was, she proves a better human being than a great deal here.
A simple moral dilemma. God tells me there are two seats to safe passage in a life threatening situation. I must choose ONE person to remain on earth with me it can be Margaret Thatcher or a Fab Forum Poster. No contest. |

Thatcher stood for everything I detest. Personally, I think her lack of empathy for the "common" man, her coldness turned us into a selfish nation. She became the poster girl for women who adopted her cold hearted bitch approach to leadership in a misplaced belief it made them equal to men. I'm also a full time officer in a trade union, so definitely not a fan of the woman.
That said...I don't begrudge the send off. She didn't expect it, the government wanted to show its respect. I begrudged the cost of the Olympics, I begrudge paying for duck houses for millionaire politicians, I begrudge paying for aid to countries that loathe us, I begrudge paying for the feckless but somehow can't begrudge ceremoniously sending Thatcher off.

Well put Sass but one day I'll argue with you that Prime Ministers before her were no warmer, compassionate or slow to utilise the populace but they were male.
She runs the gauntlet of hate and derision on the grounds of being female.
You've just done it yourself 'sister'.
I DO begrudge the money for her send off. It should be respectful but cheap xx |

I have to agree. I've been catching up on some of the posts and all I can say is wow!
So much hate: why? I just heard on the news people are trying to get the wicked witch song to number one.
Personally, I don't emulate people I don't like. If I acted with the lack of empathy I believe she showed I'd be no better.

I am surprised at the surprise that people feel because a minority would write vile, nasty comments.
Sadly, I wasn't surprised.
Some still feel pained, some feel pained for their loved ones gone before, some would follow others off a cliff & I bet there are a few, who have written messages to get their end away saying 'she was horrid beyond words' to someone with an update anti Mrs T, whilst writing 'she was such an inspiration' to someone pro Mrs T.
We know how fickle some can be when needing a scrotum emptying or a clit flicking.

AHH the days before maggie.
you could get a council house if you needed it.
the gas/electric firms were not owned by share holders trying to make a profit.
we had coal and did not need to buy it from overseas.
your rates were reasonable.
you could travel from one side of london to the other at a fair price.
No doubt she has left her kids a bit, let them pay for it! |

I think what granny is trying to say is that a lot of younger peoples comments are ill informed and based on everything they've read and been told rather than what they have actually experienced.
I have refrained from making any comment as I was only 8 when she left power I dont remember my life being any different when major took over though. To me shes an old lady, a mum, a grandmother, who passed away. she'll be missed by them if no one else and her family deserve to grieve without threats of demos at an old ladies funeral. |

You can be ill informed at any age. You can also be the opposite. Age does not automatically give you wisdom.
I was old enough as it goes, but that's not what qualifies me. From an early age I was taught to question everything in life. Who does this newspaper think I am being one of the most important.
And you're right, Thatcher does deserve dignity and respect. |

Thatcher - in my opinion - deserves no dignity or respect. I won't go into the details of why as it has been done to death on numerous threads recently.
I will say, however, that her family do. I have the greatest sympathy for them, as I said in my very first post on the matter. Time to move on, I think. |

The fact is she died as an old lady with quite a sad ending to her life, yes she lived in comfort at the Ritz, but hell all PM's end up wealthy. When she was PM I hated her, by the time she died I have no animosity, and won't be attending or protesting whatever her funeral rites may be. |
