Epigraphy is the study of carved writing.
As a result of political changes in classical Athens (there were two attempts to overthrow democracy in the middle of the democratic period), there was a change in the official spelling in classical Athenian Greek. You don't see it in printed ancient Greek, because that follows a much later convention (which includes newfangled shit like lower case letters and spaces. Kids these days blah blah). You can tell that the carving is pre revolutions if there's a lack of long vowels.
