I did it early to mid May last year. Given it was the start of the season the number of camper vans and motor homes was still a shock. I went anti clockwise and the views on the west coast were amazing. Going at that time meant I avoided the midges and the weather was good overall.
What surprised me was the number of stores that only accepted card payments.
While I'm glad I did it I wouldn't do it again x |

It looks like there are some stunning views. So any reason why you went anti clockwise ? x |

I took a few days travelling up as I wanted to see a couple of places in the Cairngorms as well. On the return I wanted to do the route from Fort William to Loch Lomond so in terms of my journey it flowed better x |

Ok sounds like you had a great trip. I have heard that there are some tight turns and some narrow roads that aren't suitable for larger motorhomes. Did you find that and have you a motorhome or camper ? x |

I've never driven either to be able to comment but some of the A roads are single lane with passing places. I did the trip on a motorbike. |

I did the ride on a motorbike. I hired one up there as it’s a long ride up and back for me plus any mechanical issues would be instantly sorted and not effect my time to get it completed.
As others have said I found it very busy, not the open roads I thought I would have, if you’re going to do it I suggest pre booking well in advance any accommodation you need. If on a bike or a car with less range check where garages are.
I also think it was fifth gear who did it in an electric car and highlighted lack of charging points, although this may have changed.
They are now doing a Welsh version of this. I will try that in the spring |
