Ladies (possibly TMI for men!) - condoms as only contraception?

I’ve always been on the pill when I’ve been sexually active in the past. Briefly had the implant fitted but I was bleeding on and off all the time. I’ve not been sexually active for a while, but now being on here and potentially being active again, I’m considering using just condoms. Just wondering if any other women do this? I’ve heard good things about the coil but don’t want to have it fitted and then I bleed a lot like with the implant. Have considered going on the pill again but I’m a lot heavier than when I was on it before and I’ve read/heard that doctors won’t put you on the pill if you’re overweight, has anyone found that to be the case? I had the copper coil for a while but it meant a lot more bleeding than I was used to. On the Merina one these days and haven't had an actual period in months.
I used to go condoms only because the hormonal methods fucked me up and I didn't like the idea of the coil at all. But this one is absolutely great for me and even the too much bleeding was better than the accidents that can happen 💜 |

Personally I wouldn't trust a condom alone.

Yeah I’m unsure about just using condoms. I worry with the injection if it makes me bleed a lot like the implant did it can’t be removed! But I didn’t realise it only lasts 3 months, so that may be worth a try. Do you get any other side effects? |

I have the Mirena coil, and use condoms primarily as disease mitigation.
Some women really don't like it. For some women it removes periods
I'm halfway in between. My periods were always heavy and - take the concept of "irregular periods" and put that on steroids. Once I had a nine month gap between my periods for no apparent reason (for the record I was a virgin, so not that reason!).
I now have a light period every 3-5 weeks (which sounds irregular but compared to my old normal is a blessing). No other effects, good or bad. |

Oh yeah I’ll still be using condoms but was just thinking about extra protection against pregnancy. |

It usually stops periods it was the reason I got it reccomended, there are some side effects I've not noticed any myself though.

I'm on my 2nd copper coil. I can't tolerate any hormone contraceptive so it's great for me. Periods are slightly heavier but that's only side effect. Periods did stop for 5mths, but that was purely due toy age I reckon. |

I got the mirena coil to settle my very heavy period and it has worked well. I do still have periods but they are regular and much lighter.
It did take 6 months to settle though with random spotting, missing a period and then 2 weeks bleeding in the 6 month period. Glad I stuck with it now though. I don't overly trust condoms on their own but I have a child who is here despite using a condom, although it split, morning after pill and I was breast feeding. Nothing can make me take the risk now |

I only use condoms, never been on any pills/coils etc
It works for me, although alot if times men have tried to coerce me into going bare but quickly change their minds when I mebtion I'm not on contraception.
Ultimately you need to do what's best for you op x |

I had copper coil in twice after my first child had infections with both, after my second child doctor recommended mirena coil, which I've had every five years for 27 years now and had no periods at all. I'd highly recommend it if periods are heavy as mine were. |

Non hormonal mirena coil and best decision I ever made. Really helped with both period pain and amount plus I don’t have to think about it until it’s time to get it changed a few years down the line. |

Was the pill for years and had to come off as started to get migraines.
Now have a copper coil as I didn’t do great on the hormonal contraceptives.
First period was really heavy but nowadays they’re light but 8/9months on I’m still fairly irregular which can be a pain if having to forward plan meets.
Starting to settle and they do say it can be 6-12 months before you completely adjust. No other side effects.
Not sure I’d trust condoms on their own, I mostly see them as control of anything nasty plus an added extra towards the not getting pregnant thing.
The family planning clinic were much more helpful with options than the GP (even if I was there to talk prevention of family as opposed to planning  ) |
