Semi-detached houses - why build them the way they do?

Flintshire

Most semi-detached houses are built with the front / back / side doors on the outside of the pair along with the staircase, bathroom, 3rd bedroom (box room) and kitchen to the outside.

Usually, the master bedroom, lounge and dining room are placed right next to each other with just a 1 brick dividing wall or if you're lucky a cavity and if you're unlucky, a dry stud wall, between the 2 houses.

Why?

Would it not be better for people as a whole if the most used living areas were seperated further apart by having the front door, staircase etc. located to the centre of the pair of semi detached houses?

Asking for a friend who wants to record podcasts at home but has a deaf neighbour who likes his telly up loud.

The upside to the staircase being on the outside wall is it helps cut or completely stop the noise for your neighbour.
