Let it be a lesson to other people of her age/generation, the opportunity of a lifetime gone in a heartbeat....
Also putting herself in the wrong sort of spotlight for future employers....silly girl. |

Do you know her enough or even personally to make such a strong statement? I understand it is your right to say what you want but come one....who in their right mind would wish anyone out of a job in the current situation??? And guess what she will have you snookered because tomorrow she won't be going to the job centre...I will thank you very much! |

Having read some of the comments on here by 'adults' over the last few days, I give a youngster some scope for fucking up through stupidness, not malice.
But her position meant she had to go.

I think its a shame she's resigned but I can understand her reasoning for doing so. I wonder if this will affect the way people act on Facebook and Twitter. Sadly I doubt it very much.
My FB feed has been full of some fairly trite stuff over the last 24 hours. It puts me off FB and I have to say I've now hidden my own mother from my timeline.
As far as I'm aware social networking sites can be used in a court of law as evidence; I think people need to realise this. |

I don't even know who she is or what she has done! If she did it what she is accused of...whatever that is then she deserves what's coming to her BUT.....Nothing justifies malicious evil comments on another human being...A literal translation of a french proverb would go like this: "it is easy to see see the beam in the eye of neighbor"...make of it what you want. I am just sorry that a good thread that could have brought some excellent comments and discussion was soiled by bad mouthing... |

She's a silly 17 year old girl. Calling her a 'fucking twat' is more than harsh. It is wholly unnecessary. She, at least, had the decency to see the error of her ways and has resigned. |

I think she said the guys on the 'chelsea' programme looked like fags, and something about illegals. She was off to make a hash cake and she wanted to cut people... all unacceptable in her position but she faced the cameras, apologised & resigned...

She was younger than she is now when she made the comments, I believe. Children and young people are in this strange situation now that we never had: their every utterance is recorded forever, simply because they do all of their uttering on social media.
If you were still being judged on the things you said when you were a 15 year old how would you fare?
She has learnt an important lesson in life. I hope as she matures that her _iews on race and sexuality and all manner of other things will mature, develop and change. |

At first she refused to resign, she only did so under pressure, so it wasn't out of decency at all. Kids like this think they can say what they like and it's nothing, I hope at least some of them get a wake up call that their actions do have repercussions |

Ignorance is the tool of fools. She made the comments a couple of years ago BEFORE she landed her job. She's been vilified by the media but I believe it is more of an attack on the woman who appointed her than on the teenager herself. |

I've just checked your age so I now feel confident in saying we didn't have the same opportunities/threats to expose our stupidity then. Records were paper, not online, our sphere rarely had the chance to send our stupid remarks worldwide, let alone viral.
I don't think the appointments committee did enough to check her out before making the appointment. She will now end up on a sofa on our screens and will have her 15 minutes of fame that way. She may also "write" a book for young people on the dangers of committing daft things on the internet.

It's a great shame because the idea of a direct link between youth and the police at a senior management level is not such a bad thing......
Hopefully this will not have put the police off from continuing with the idea, which was being _iewed as a trial for future roll outs. |

I completely agree with you. I hope that the police continue with the trial. The BBC website says the post will be re advertised in Summer.
I think its a positive step in introducing a Youth Commissioner.
Does anyone know if it was a pilot scheme? |

I don't think she resigned herself more likely she was told to and the police will not be under pressure to prosecute her.
She is young and this won't effect her long term prospects. |

I do hope they are not deterred by this. The gap between young people and the police is not a small one. Fingers crossed they continue the scheme and one child's mistake does not halt the scheme. |

my take on this is that she is 17 years old, young and inexperienced in the ways of the world. I am astounded that the authorities are so far out of touch that they didn't think to look into her social networking sites before appointing her, that they allowed her to be inter_iewed by TMOS and then effectively allowed her to be publicly pilloried. 17 FFS! The person most to blame for this is the one who appointed her and then didn't give her the tools to deal with public office.
She had to resign, she can't really come back from this and it would always come back to bite her, her position was untenable.
A youth commisioner needs to be someone that youngsters identify with too not some prefect type, geeky kid that is as out of touch as the adults so I hope they don't now appoint some pristine William hague type.
I hope that everyone concerned has learned lessons and that all of us realise that comments made on any web site or social media can and will come back to haunt you. |

Some daft wee 17 year old should not be youth commissioner anyway. Just a PR exercise. Would be more convincing if got a convicted gang leader drug dealer - someone who could actually break barriers and firm relations. Complete bolloxks tho as the police are so fat outta touch with the youth its laughable. |

1. An organisation can't check out your social network page before offering you a job.
2. She can easily come back from this. Many people will.actually be impressed with the way she dealt with it all at 17. She will get job offers.

You are right when you say a you hope role wont be given to a 'prefect' type which is why she could of done well. She gets what youth are like because she was one and has matured since. What the fuck were they even thinking getting a 17 year old to do that job? It's not a matter of trust but of maturity, which you dont get from a 17 year old. Girl cant even drink or smoke legally and she gets given that kind of responsibility? The "d*unk racist" tweet wasn't even brought into question since she wasnt of legal age.
Kid from Chelsea called Paris. The police are trained to detect criminal behaviour by relating to stereotypes, well then its only fair the public should stereotype. Clever little daddy's princess without a clue given a chance over hundreds of responsible adults with experience and wisdom. Result, clever princess turns out thick as shit and pig ignorant.
If you want youth crime down, employ a responsible adult parent who is in touch with their kids and their better senses! |

Very much my opinion too.
I don't condone any of the tweets though some are clearly being taken out of context but for the Mail to attack her how they did on Sunday is wrong.
the saddest thing is that an initiative that should be being applauded, namely getting youngsters involved in politics and thir thoughts heard by the police is almost certainly now lost. |

"Won't they appoint someone else?"
Only one (I believe) had been appointed, the appointee is now being vilified as much as Paris Brown. There is no requirement for one it was an initiative and I suspect that once bitten twice shy will apply. But if not, I suspect (as posted by someone else) that it won't be a kid that smokes drinks and swears, it will be somebody like William Hague. |

It will be a woman. The closest they can similarise with Thatcher but not regarding age, class or penchant for ridiculous amounts of hairspray. She will claim to care. According to an article I have just read they will appoint another.
I am sure all teens have had an odd swear smoke or drink.....but there is a difference to doing those and being racist and homophobic so hopefully they will pick a person who isn't racist or homophobic this time. |

It would be difficult for her to keep her job given her comments in the face of the British media
But haven't we all said things in out teenage years we've looked back on regretted
The person who also needs bringing task in the police commissioner who has used this as more of a publicity stunt than a serious attempt to employ someone who can help the police improve relationships with teenagers
Perhaps employing someone in their early 20's who'd been in trouble & now reformed, a person with greater credibility with the teenagers? |

It's a sorry world we live in when a reformed criminal is preferred for a role model position than someone who has not been convicted of anything.
Paris Brown was thrust into the spotlight as soon as her new boss could get her there without giving her enough time to settle in and clear out any skeletons her tender years had accrued with the protective hand of her more experienced boss to watch out for her. |

I think that it's safe to say that my left wing principles are not hidden on this forum so I am not one for condoning either racist or homophobic _iews, but I think she is getting a rough ride. The tweets I saw (and I accept that they may have not seen them all) were crass, they were ignorant, they were unpleasant but they came across as born out of immaturity and a desperate craving for attention more than hatred and bigotry. Believe me, I have seen enough posts online from the far right to tell the difference.
The danger is that the replacement will be like that awful teenage Hague that appeared at the tory conference all those years ago, in order to avoid any potential controversy.
I stress that I am not condoning Paris Brown's tweets, but a sense of perspective is possibly needed. |

Why is it assumed that a Hague clone will get the job when a Hague clone didn't get it before? I could think of another suitable stereotype they should look for: a Brooke Kinsella clone. |

"Not harsh at all, she's an absolute fucking twat
Do you know her enough or even personally to make such a strong statement? I understand it is your right to say what you want but come one....who in their right mind would wish anyone out of a job in the current situation??? And guess what she will have you snookered because tomorrow she won't be going to the job centre...I will thank you very much!
I've seen as much of it as anyone else and that's my opinion, only an absolute twat would spout off about making hash brownies when they had been given that position"
The comments she made on Twatter and Bookface were made in the six months BEFORE she even applied for the job.
If anything good comes out of this, I hope it is that she is used as an example to 'young people' what the repercussions can be of some of the immature vitriol that they spout at each other without a second thought via 'social networking' sites. |

"What the fuck were they even thinking getting a 17 year old to do that job?
Chelsea?......I thought she was from Sittingbourne in Kent?"

She got the job as Ann Barnes (the Police and Crime Commissioner for Kent) made it one of her election promises to have a Commissioner for Young People.
Ann Barnes got elected as she was the Conservative candidate, and - not to put too finer point on it - you could have had a donkey standing for the Tories for that appointment and it would have got elected, so what has happened is little wonder to me.... |

Not read the whole of this thread so apologies if my comment has already been made.
Those of us old enough will remember a certain actor turned head of state who made "amusing comments" about "setting the nukes onto the Russians" during a T.V. run though before making a speech that was due to be aired live. The comments were recorded and aired at a later time. That person was Ronald Ragen (sp?) who did not resign but went on to continue his term of office. A long time ago I`ll admit but I think it`s double standards for the young girl to have been pressurised into resigning when there`s a quite new communication system being used by young people who at the time comments were made will have little idea of the concequences when there`s a very savvy press seeking out stories. Given time, who knows how this young girl would have turned out? |

"Won't they appoint someone else?
Only one (I believe) had been appointed, the appointee is now being vilified as much as Paris Brown. There is no requirement for one it was an initiative and I suspect that once bitten twice shy will apply. But if not, I suspect (as posted by someone else) that it won't be a kid that smokes drinks and swears, it will be somebody like William Hague.
According to an article I have just read they will appoint another.
I am sure all teens have had an odd swear smoke or drink.....but there is a difference to doing those and being racist and homophobic so hopefully they will pick a person who isn't racist or homophobic this time.
I think that it's safe to say that my left wing principles are not hidden on this forum so I am not one for condoning either racist or homophobic _iews, but I think she is getting a rough ride. Ann Barnes, the Police Commissioner who employed her, was inter_iewed on LBC this evening. To say that she was doing her best to appear both caring, but distancing herself as much as possible would be an understatement. She admitted that they didn't even consider checking Ms Brown's Twatter and Bookface pronouncements during the inter_iew process. They appeared to be more concerned at finding out how media savvy she was.... obviously, they didn't ask 'which' media she was savvy about, did they..... |

I've seen my own daughter bigging herself up on Facebook. She did it to look 'cool' until someone called her on it. Then I made her publicly climb down. It's a misguided popularity thing that makes them do it but i have to wonder where Paris Brown's parents were when she was baking hash browns and getting shagged/d*unk. I suspect they were downstairs and completely oblivious that their precocious sober and virginity intact daughter was upstairs bigging herself up. |

There is bigging yourself up and there is something that has to be in their head to start with surely.
Now don't get me wrong, they may have been brought up that way and know no different, but it still something that they may think is normal enough to type about. |

I hate drugs, I have no time for junkies, or people who talk big about drugs, and I especially dont like the 'laddette culture.
But I actually really feel sorry for this girl, she made silly comments before she took the post..christ how many of us would be in deep shit in work (especially in this sanitised apologist society) for something we said or done in our youth?...
She has got to bare the burden for the rest of her life..and now the ol bill want to get in on the act as well and see if there are any charges to be brought too...she was trying to carve out a career for herself, now its all gone wrong for her, and she is going to probably struggle finding work...imagine if she topped herself over it..it would be interesting to see which direction the fickle finger of blame points then...
She is a kid who made some silly comments, end of..

Got to agree...very harsh lesson learnt for the girl.Very harsh...but she had to resign...every thing she would have offered to her job would have been ridiculed !! But we have all been 17...and wish we could have changed things we made an ass of !! There were drug tweets....I personally cant stand drug taking...so I can feel no sympathy with her for that one !! |

These comments were made a couple of years ago? So is this the medias new method of obtaining salacious gossip now they have been stopped from phone hacking?
Still, I don't understand the need to publicise your every action, thought and feelings to the world via these services. Nobody is remotely interested. Until you get (in)famous.
Cancel your Twitter/Facebook/whatever now. Delete all the info on there. It will all be used against you eventually. And the powers that be that use it to monitor us will say "well you signed up for it". |

I didn't know that an organisation couldn't check your social media before offering you a job? Is there legislation in place to prohibit that? How is it policed?

If information is in the public domain (e.g. Facebook) then there is nothing stopping anyone _iewing it - including a prospective employer. If they then choose to use what they see to make a decision, there's nothing stopping them.
There are quite a few stories about people being sacked for making inappropriate comments on Facebook. |

So I understand, in the London area it is now the norm for recruitment consultants to check a candidates Facebook and Twatter if they get to the short list for a position - just in case the prospective employer had already done so and might ask the candidate at the final inter_iew about some of their 'pronouncements'... |

Anyone who trusts FB "privacy" settings really is asking for it. Don't squeal if FB revise them (again) and mysteriously make all your private content non-private.

There's not much genuine security across the whole internet.
If you don't want the possibility of something being shared with the rest of the world, don't post it online. |
