We had one who had done work for us before not turn up at all. Turned out he was still at home in bed nursing a huge hangover. We managed to fond somebody else at short notice. Never used him again |

I had a guy on Friday, turned up before I got there and started the job, burst water pipe. There in 20 mins job done in less than an hour.
It took 3 hours calling around before that and people saying can't do it till next month, wanting £250 just to show up and 'look at it'.
There's still good ones out there, the hard part is finding them. |

A neighbour is getting high speed super douper Internet put in. 3 times they changed the date last minute. Came Friday - meant to be here at 8, turned up closer to half 11. Caused a nightmare parking as its a narrow road. Did half an hour of work, had a good half hour tea break, poked around for 20 minutes or so then left to "get lunch". Didn't come back. And no one has turned up today either, leaving three huge holes in the road where they had to dig up to get to the various wires and my neighbour still doesn't have his super douper Internet |

You will be lucky to get a decent one in the first place, especially plumbers. Then you have to be prepared to deal with delays and a big diva attitude in much of the experience I had with them. They seldom undrestand that if you are in my house, doing paid work, you have to respect my wishes and do the job I want doing not what is the quickest and most convenient way for you. Pride in what they do has gone out of the window with most of them these days. Apologies to anyone that is an exception but you are also a rarety. |

True, finding them is hard, and I think it's hard to trust anyone |

"They might be held up at another job or stuck in traffic, but a phone call never hurt.
Fingers crossed they show up 🤞"
They did show up, over slept!! Seems they have no respect for their customers or their business |

We look at reviews
When a trader bothers to turn up for a quote, they need to be on time or call asap if any delays and these should be stuck in traffic or stuck at job as bigger than thought
once you get the quote and they turned up on time and appear polite and professioanl along with their reviews - ask re firm quote if possible and start date, finnish date and start and finnish times and when you pay them. We often just pay at the end unless big job and then its for work completed
We had a plumber over with his mate - he was difeientley not the cheapest not the most expesnide - he and his assistant assured us they'd do a good job and keep mess to a min. Then he started slagging off someone he did work for on road next to us. I said to mrs afterwards he is not nice - but she insisted we went with him as she wanted works done - come the big day - no show - i rang him 40 mins later intially no reply, then i rang him again 10 mins later no reply - he rang about 20 mins after that saying he got held up and could come another time - our job was first of the day start at 8-30 - i told him to call me when he is ready
I rang up another guy that was cheaper than he he agreed to do in two day - he did and 10/10.
The orginal plumber rang up saying he could come tomorrow - i told him i did the job myself
if you have any doubts re trader when speaking to them or they are later and no call from them to say why and not say sorry i am late when they turn up or they slag off another customer, AVOIID
Even these sites that claim to verrify builders - its ok to good but not fool proof so be aware |

Late as I’m not there for a certain time that day or late as in a completely different date?
As a tradesman who has spent the entire year running behind due to the wettest winter in a long time I can attest the latter is sometimes unavoidable.

Its mainly a sign of the times, general lack of respect, don't really need the work because they have more than they can cope with coming in all the time, not enough of them out there, schools are only turning out academics and the ones who used to be trained as trades people only get jobs in call centres because they don't want tp put in the physical effort that most trades people encounter, even though most trades are much easier now with the tools and equipment available. |
