In times of war, some soldiers used ground acorns as a coffee substitute. Acorn coffee was made during the American Civil War and the Germans made their own version during the World Wars calling it ersatz coffee.

Apparantly acorns symbolise fertility.

From a tiny acorn a huge oak tree can grow.

The Dutch word for squirrel is "eekhoorn" which is pronounced the same as acorn. This can leed to some confusion.

Almost 11 years ago, we took our two toddlers collecting acorns at the local country park.

They collected a bucketful each. We managed to successfully propagate 6 of them.

One is in a pot on the patio doing well, and another one stands just over 8ft tall in the back garden.

They will likely outlive the children who picked them.

Paris, New York, Hong Kong and Havant

In the New Forest - pigs are allowed to roam free searching out acorns for a high protein food source it’s called locally as Panage

Acorns are high in tannin too and soo identification of oaks often a reliable method of identification is by their fruit - an acorn

( hardwoods have their seed encased in flesh eg an apple - where as softwoods have thief seed exposed in a pine cone for example, )
