Olympics Breaking
Jump to: Newest in thread
So breaking / breakdancing has been included in the Olympic Games for the first time. Has the Olympics hit an all time low / weirdness level? Has it moved with the times and is it a welcome inclusion? Is it just a different form of rhythmic gymnastics? Are we pandering to da yoof of today. Will parkour be next and should it be included? What criteria should be used for including 'sports' at the Olympics? Should the Olympics stick with 'traditional' field and track type type sports? - Go! |

I think it's part of an effort to grab and maintain interest from the teen/early 20's demographic.
Mad to think that what started out in garages by kids with an off cut of vinyl and a ghetto blaster has become an event at the Olympics! |

"I read somewhere that the host city gets to pick a couple of sports to be added for the games and Paris picked this. LA is next and I think they’ve picked Lacrosse. "
But breaking is not yet included - will it be a one-off? |

As far as I know. Lacrosse has only features at two past Olympics. 1904 and 1908 according to Wikipedia. |

Forgive me here, but I don't think it has a place at the Olympics. I watched the final and thought, is this a sport, I struggled to see the competition element. Maybe as I don't know enough about it.
There are several well established sports with huge participation that deserve inclusion and they are still not included yet. |

If break dancing can be included then so can the jitter bug and other forms of dancing that require athletic ability.
I also think it is likely to appeal to a very small percentage of the modern yoof. |

In my youth I was a B-Boy, and precipitated in dance offs like I saw on the Olympics.
To be a B-Boy was a lot of training, learning moves and devising routines.
When I heard it was included I was surprised but proud that it has been taken seriously now as a sport. |

You'll probably remember when Art was included in the olympics. |

"So breaking will not be in the 2028 Olympics, boxing has not yet been included, but cricket, flag football, lacrosse, squash and baseball-softball will be."
Surprised they didn't include spelling bee's, cheerleading and muddy swamp racing. |

Boxing has only not been included yet because the International Olympic Committee don't see why they should bear the cost and want the boxing governing bodies to sort their shit out. |

The good news is it hasn't been included in the next Olympics and apparently it's unlikely to be in the 2032 down to funding!
But surely this and other so call sports shouldn't be there.
Synchronised swimming, some of the gymnastics, ice skating and diving. They all require a judges to score them to interpret what they have and give them a score. In my mind not a competition. Fantastically dedicated, fit. Skill people, but not a sport.
In my mind a sport would have an out come/result whether there was a judge there or not. The judge should only only be there to ensure the fairness of the event!
A race is decided by who crosses the line first. Shot put by who throws it the furthest. Canoe by who crosses the line first etc! You don't get bonus points for the style of your run or the wiggle the javelin made.
Should football or golf even be it in? Suppose to be amateures. Golf look like a normally line up of any big golf comp. Footballers get paid by clubs.
Tennis looked just like any other tennis event. Just a thought? |

Sadly the Olympics stopped being truly amateur a long time ago. I think there is even prize money for some events now. |

Just checked - some countries pay their competitors if they get a medal. The IOC do not award prize money. |

Why "sadly"? These are elite athletes for the most part, of course they should get monetary compensation for the blood, sweat and tears they put into their chosen event.
They're paid/rewarded in whatever way by the country they represent, not the IOC. |

Tom is often late to the party but just seen the Ossie lady jumping around like a 5 year old doing an impression of a kangaroo dressed like a cricketer A mind boggling performance and lots of criticism being accused of misogyny. Misogyny, Toms backside. Like Ricky Gervais dancing in the Office. Truly pitiful. She would not have passed an audition for Britains Got Talent. |

Does it matter? If it inspires people to be more active or take an interest in a sub culture?
The Olympics have criteria to what sports are allowed to be included, if they pass they should be allowed in. |

"They should make the olympics track and field only, get back to basics.
Yes, make it more limited and boring, that will increase interest"
If you want to go really back to basics make the athletes nude like the old Olympics.
That would get interest up. |

We have the Athletics world championship for that.
The Olympics has always been a multi sport event. I can't see break-dancing surviving long, but some of the other new sports like BMX are amazing. |

I'm perfectly happy to see any existing event evolve, or new events to be included. I don't feel traditions should be "ring-fenced", because you ensl@ve people to an ideal and all ideals lose relevance over time. Just because I did javelin in my youth, doesn't mean future generations have too. Let the generation du jour choose what is relevant and exciting to them, and let them make their Games "their own". |

The break dancing has been an absolute embarrassment but I guess we’ll just have to accept it because it’s like that and that’s the way it is.

This is only a showcase sport. And it's going to replaced by Squash in the next Olympics. |

I'd have liked to have seen parkour in these games. Perfect for it seeing as it's a French Olympics.
Especially if it was in the tig chase format. |

I think parkour would be a great watch. I don't know how you score it, but they're amazing athletes. The Modern Pentathlon will have an obstacle race in the next games which sounds great! |

As far as I know Parkour (a race) does not have a governing body where as free running (tricking) does. |
