A pregnant woman leading a group of people out of a cave on a coast is stuck in the mouth of that cave. In a short time high tide will be upon them, and unless she is unstuck, they will all be drowned except the woman, whose head is out of the cave. Fortunately, (or unfortunately,) someone has with him a stick of dynamite. There seems no way to get the pregnant woman loose without using the dynamite which will inevitably kill her; but if they do not use it everyone will drown. What should they do? |

break her waters and tell her she had better start pushing. |

She's just 3 months pregnant. If you do that the foetus will certainly die and she may well bleed to death, and she will still be stuck and preventing anyone else from escaping. |

Depends how many are in the cave, if it's your wife and baby.
If it was a stranger and there were lots of people stuck in the cave, then i say blow her up. |

There are 15 people in the group, including some children under 12. Let's say she is your wife, or sister. But your mother and father are in the group who could be drowned. |

I'd blow her up and suffer from guilt the rest of my life. |

carfully remove the blasting cap off the dynomite. inside you will find glycerine. use the gel to lubricate the entrance and the womans belly then push from behind to simply squeze her out. |

You could wait for the water the flow in then set the dynamite off the resulting pressure would force her out like a cork probably kill her aswell but I'd be using on of the kids as a human shield then go on to do some tv interviews about my "ordeal" then hopefully get a daytime bit on QVC selling shit no one wants of needs |

OK - here's another one!
You are an inmate in a concentration camp. A sadistic guard is about to hang your son who tried to escape and wants you to pull the chair from underneath him. He says that if you don’t he will not only kill your son but some other innocent inmate as well. You don’t have any doubt that he means what he says. What should you do? |

I don't like this scenario. You're stressing me out, lol.
Like a lot of situations in the Saw movies, I don't know what I would do. I don't know if I could take a life even if it meant I could save many others. If someone else can take charge, I'd need to go and sit in the corner where I can face the wall with my fingers in my ears.

She's not heavily pregnant. It's not her pregnancy which is causing the problem. She is irretrievably wedged. Nothing, short of the dynamite, will shift her. There are only two options. Blow her up killing her and her unborn child, but letting everyone else be saved. Or save her and let everyone else drown. |

But if you let everyone else die , is that not also murder? Inaction in this case can be the action of actually killing them. The choice is two lives or 15. |

An easier one perhaps?
A child is crying in the street. No one is helping her. You need to catch the bus (just pulling up to the bus station now) to visit your friend who is about to have an operation. What do you do? |

Its guilty by association if your in anyway involved in what happened you can be placed on trial with the actual offender. They can't do you for not intervening but if its deemed that you participated your going down. But they'd all have there story straight by the time the police got there and be deaf for two day and unable to be interviewed |

But you are doing something. You are making a choice here.
It's really difficult. That's the point of considering moral dilemmas. We all face them at some point in our lives - perhaps not as extreme as these.
For example, I spotted a child crying in a shopping centre some time ago. He was about 3 no more. There were a lot of people around but everyone was ignoring this child. My husband at the time wanted me to walk away as he was afraid that if we intervened then we would look like child abusers. My reasoning was I knew I wasn't and that by leaving the child I could actually leave him at the mercy of a REAL abuser! So my inaction could, potentially, have caused this child harm. I talked to him and calmed him down and then took him into the shop he was outside of. I talked to the manager of the shop to announce the child as being lost. Luckily the mother of the child was also in the shop - she had not even noticed he was missing! They were reunited and I went on my way. |

This is one which could happen to anyone.
Your best friend's husband has been organising a surprise party for her 40th. Unfortunately, your friend thinks he's having an affair(the secret phone-calls, etc) so she phones you in floods of tears saying two can play at that game. You find out that she goes into town, dressed to kill, all alone. She won't answer her phone and you suspect that she has picked someone up for sex. Do you tell her husband who phones you asking if she is there with you? |

How did she get in the cave in the first place? Surely she has not grown so much on a cave trip that she cannot get out the way she came in?
If she is stuck going out then she can also be withdrawn from inside so do that, let the rest leave and then use the dynamite to make the cave mouth bigger.
Or do us engineers see the simple solutions? |

No.
Again doing nothing is best policy. |

"What you did was get the manager to tannoy a lost child and the child was handed over to some woman you had never seen before. Therebye 'potentially' handing the child over to an abuser. "
No I went to the manager of the shop and asked them to call over the tannoy. I did not leave the child once and was actually there when the mother claimed the child - and she really had no idea he was missing! I had been with him at least 10 minutes in this time (the entire time my hubby wanted me to leave him). He was, as I say, no more than 3. Probably only just out of nappies! Really a small child. I was astonished by her lack of care - and the fact that she did not seem too bothered. She actually told him 'not to be silly' because he was crying and in distress. This happened around Christmas time in a very very busy and large shopping centre. It was the Trafford Centre - which is bloody enormous! |

I managed a shop at one time, a child was dragged in by a woman, the child was screaming and distresed, I asked if she was alright, when the woman responded I said I was talking to the child, then asked who the lady was.
The child was clear about her being her Mum.

It is - I was just adding details since everyone wants to try and change the boundaries of the choices! LOL The choices are - kill the pregnant woman and save everyone else. Let the pregnant woman live thereby leaving everyone else to die. Those two choices have not changed. |

Problem One: Gender and pregnancy have no impact on the issue, but if someone is stupid enough to get themselves wedged into the only escape route then it's only fair that you blow them up and remove them from the gene pool
Problem Two: Kill the guard, start a revolt with lots of deaths on both sides, but perhaps a few will escape the camp.
Problem Three: sort the kid out, find their parent then take a cab, buses are painful.
Problem Four: is not a problem, you have not been asked to provide an alibi, so simply tell the husband the truth she is not with you and you don't know where she is. git didn't invite you to the party anyway
Life is simple really

"Then it's the simple story of the greater good. As in most of these.
There is no truth in the matter. "
Precisely. That's the point. Often when given a moral dilemma with such choices people have to change the boundaries. Many cannot accept the choices as they are so difficult to make. Perhaps some people NEED to have some kind of personal connection to the dilemma - as in parents, is the child your child, etc! |

Problem 1 - what if she was actually the person chosen to go through first? She did not choose to. Now, through no fault of her own she is stuck.
Problem 2 - revolt and every single person dies.
Problem 3 - you have no cab fare and if you are late then you will be breaking a promise to your best friend.
Problem 4 - you know that this could end their marriage and they are both good friends. |

No - some of these I have seen before. I find it interesting. And have to admit I am not so sure how I would genuinely react in particular situations. Of course, just discussing them then it seems easy to be logical but if you were faced with this then it might not be so easy.
How about this one? A woman comes into a maternity hospital. She is going in to premature labour. The only way to save her life is to abort the baby but this is against the law. The baby is most certainly dead. Should the doctors, who have signed the Hippocratic Oath (first do no harm), break the law and save her life, or let her die? |

Not fair, you are now moving the boundaries.
My answers stand.
1, Get he person who forced her to attempt an escape through a small exit to light the fuse... should have sent the smallest out first.
2, Quick death by bullet is better than starving and if you can take some guards with you there is some satisfaction.
3, Ransom the kid for cab fare
4, still no problem, you have not been asked to provide an alibi so all you need to be is honest. |

This is no issue, child is dead, Hippocratic oath is for the living, and if she is in labour anyway it's a delivery not an abortion. |

Logically, problem 1 seems simple. You kill the woman and save the others. But, if faced with that in actuality, could you do it?
Problem 2 is a problem that was faced by many concentration camp inmates. In the majority of cases they chose not to revolt. The instinct to stay alive for as long as possible was too great for many - I know this having met and spoken to a concentration camp survivor. How could anyone make such a decision? Yet many were asked to do just this!
Problem 3, to me, is simple. Help the child. I would have to. I just could not walk away and I would know that my friend is in good hands and I will be there when they come round.
Problem 4 - I would try not to alarm the husband but would perhaps go looking for the friend. I doubt I would tell him anything at that point since I have no evidence that she has, in fact, been unfaithful. |

"How about this one? A woman comes into a maternity hospital. She is going in to premature labour. The only way to save her life is to abort the baby but this is against the law. The baby is most certainly dead. Should the doctors, who have signed the Hippocratic Oath (first do no harm), break the law and save her life, or let her die?
This is no issue, child is dead, Hippocratic oath is for the living, and if she is in labour anyway it's a delivery not an abortion."
Well, this is a true story. And the hospital allowed the woman to die. The inquest into her death was reported in the news today. |

OK moral choice for you, you know your friend has cheated on a once off basis on her partner, she has justified her actions by telling you she suspects he is involved with an on going affair. Do you go and tell him? |

Tough choice. I am genuinely not sure. If I thought it would destroy their marriage, there were children involved, and it would cause all-round hurt, probably not. But I would have a very frank discussion with her. |

1. I would probably kill the woman at the penultimate moment when my instinct to survive is at it's most powerful.
2. I wouldn't kick the chair. If I did I would be murdering my own child. If I don't I do not murder anyone the guard does. My inaction is not murder.
3. I do not do anything. My friend has been a dickhead and made sure we can't contact her. Her fault no one elses. I do not tell her husband what she said cos I don't have any proof she's done it.
4. If the baby is dead it's not abortion. Still birth or cesarian birth and save mum. |

Cant find it on BBC News, which country was it? I would suspect that the reporting has it wrong as late stage abortions are simply a case of inducing labour which she was already in anyway.

I am imagining a good friend of mine. She has two children. Now, sometimes she feels a bit neglected but that is because he works so hard to provide for her and their two sons. He is also a very good friend. I would be annoyed with her for reacting so badly without discussion with her husband, or, indeed, without finding out the truth. As a friend I would be very straight and direct with her and I know, after more than 20 years of friendship, that she would fully understand. |

It was that case in Ireland (actually, not sure if she was was in labour, but certainly, they refused an abortion and she died). The woman's name was 'Savita Halappanavar'. I may have not got all the details correct but used it as an example.
People working in triage, for example, have to face moral dilemmas on a daily basis. |

Bottom line is some women die in childbirth, thankfully a lot less now than in the past, also Doctors screw up from time to time then have to find a justification for the mistakes. Without full detail and an autopsy report nobody can say if the death of either mother or child was preventable or not.
In any country abortion legal or not, in late stage pregnancy doctors (and mothers) will want to do the best to save both, but when it comes to an either / or situation most western doctors would value the mother over the child, but that is not a global truth. |

Still don't know the details, but from Galway it's only a 50 mile drive to the UK she could have had the abortion at any time rather than trying through the courts to make a test case. |

Not sure if she was physically fit to travel at the time. The dilemma is that she was there in the hospital begging for help, as was her husband, only to be told that it could not happen as it was a Catholic country, even though they were not Catholic. |

Because I know both of them and their details - without giving away too much of their personal life. He's been very very good to her. It would annoy me that she felt she had to 'retalliate' without finding out for certain. After all, in this scenario, he is trying to actually do something nice for her.

I think this is an easier one:
How much money, if indeed you have a price, would you need to be paid to have sex with a person who hadn't showered or washed for a month? |

I would not take sides or react in any way, rather like the forums you are working of partial information so your conclusions are not totally valid. I would be inclined to ask her not to tell me anything and leave me out of it, not a marriage guidance councillor but even they would not be willing to work on half a story. |

I wouldn't be taking sides though. I would not tell him and I would wait to find out what she was up to first. If I have already been involved - and, considering a friend of mine, I know she would want to discuss it, then I would have to be open and honest with her and make her realise that her initial reaction to his 'perceived' infidelity was actually misplaced. I know she would understand. |

You are hiding in a basement along with your fellow villagers as enemy soldiers approach; if they find you they will kill you. Your baby starts to cry, so you cover the mouth of the child. If you pull your hand away the baby will cry louder and alert the soldiers, but if you don’t take your hand away you will smother the baby to death. What is the ethical choice?
I think this story was done in an old episode of MASH. I also think it was in The Pianist. |

Been in lots of films, it's supposed to engender the despair of the situation. feed the poor kid probably won't cry or die with a tit in it's mouth! if you can't do that then it's actually simplified if you know if you don't kill it then they will.

Ok here is another one where you have to face the fact that killing is an option.
Whilst climbing the person below you falls, and the clip point above you is not 100% do you risk your life and try to hang onto the climber below, or cut the rope let him / her fall and save yourself? |

I'd like to think that I would hang on - but, knowing that I have very little arm strength, I would probably have no option but to cut the rope. |

You are driving down the road in your car on a wild, stormy night, when you pass by a bus stop and you see three people waiting for the bus:
1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.
2. An old friend who once saved your life.
3. The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.
Your car will only hold one passenger. What would you do? |

I'd give the keys to my friend and ask her/him to take the old lady to a hospital. Then stay with the guy and try to chat him up - at the very least I might get a wild and windy shag! |

Something similar to that in the 2006 "Poseidon" movie... The group climb up an elevator shaft trying to reach the propellers of the ship. I think the ladder collapses and two people are left hanging, one of which is a young porter who is the only one who knows his way around the ship but he is the one at the bottom hanging onto the other man's leg. An elevator above them starts collapsing and the group are stuggling to pull them both up, so the guy they have hold of is forced to either shake him off or they both die.
Quite distressing to watch, actually as the porter had done so much to help them. |
