Stuffing an old mattress into a car

Help me out you clever prople..

I've just ordered a new mattress from a local bed shop.

They wanted £40 to get rid of the old one, so had the idea of either the council take it for free but have to wait till November

Or the other option to see if I can stuff it into the back of my fiesta and take to the tip myself.

Should I ;

1. Pay the £40

2. Have an old mattress stored in my house for 3 months then taken for free

3. Try n stuff it into the back of my fiesta and take to local tip for free?

Carlisle usually

If it's in decent nick there's likely shelters and similar nearby that would pick it up.

If it's broken and covered in stains, pay the £40 or squash it in the car. Check if the tip will take it first though.

Get a roll of gaffer tape and roll it up...

Ultimately mattresses are fairly squishy so it will definitely go.

Alternatively you could tie it onto the roof.

Fold up the mattress and buy some ratchet straps to help do it.

I got a king size into a Vauxhall Astra and took it to the recycling centre easy enough

Pay the £40. It’s just part of the cost of the new mattress 🤷‍♂️

Pay the £40 if you can afford it. The only use for money is to make your life easier.

You haven't mentioned the size of the mattress.

I'm assuming it's not a single.

I changed 4 mattresses in my house a few years ago. I put the old ones for free to collect on Gumtree, they were gone in a day.

Prefer doing that, so someone else gets use out of something, than putting it landfill.

If you pay the £40 your new provider will remove the old one and will dispose of it correctly.

If it's no longer fit for purpose for it to be reused why not take it apart yourself then get rid!

Did this the other month, get some string, bend it in half, loop it around and tie it off. They are cumbersome so having two people makes it easier

Carefully cut it open if you have metal springs inside of it

Either leave the metal for scrap people or and take to tip Simple’s

We have many greens around my area and there's frequently a mattress or two festering away on them.

My council charges £20 to take away three items, which I think is a bargain.

I live in Yorkshire and I’m amazed at the amount of mattresses and other rubbish is thrown in the hedge bottoms on the country lanes

Disgusting vile people

I started to tie it up and opened the Boot but she started complaining! lol..

No, I rolled a King-Sized up, and tied it off, stuck it in the back of a c-max, tied down the tailgate and took it to the tip..

By far the easiest option but remember at some Tips now, You have to book in before You go !!

Go dogging with it in the back on your way to the tip. When you open the boot it will spring out like an erecting penis and be jolly useful on the grass for one last big hump. There it's sorted

If you live in Cardiff it appears that all you need to do is throw it in the street.

No, you can't *just* throw a mattress in the street in Cardiff. You first have to shit, piss and vomit on it then set fire to it. I think there's a bye law.

Oh this is an easy one. You put it in front of the house and jump up and down on it for hours on end.

But this is the key bit, you must show no signs of enjoyment while doing it or even any facial expressions. And you have to watch people in an unsettling manner as they walk past.

Then when the authorities come to speak to you you say the mattress made you do it. Then they'll take it away.

Sure you'll be on a watch list some where but you'll have gotten in some cardio and your mattress will be gone.

Strap it to the roof of your car.

If you have an accident and roll it, you'll have an extra layer of protection.

And if its hot and sunny you can advertise for an 'al fresco' meet. Way more room than the back seat.

It will make indulging in the 'thirsty hamster' with a partner impossible though........🤔🤦‍♂️

Definitely just get it in the car, I've got loads in my old Corsa when I had it! Assuming it's not like a triple king size you should be fine.

I have done it a few times.

If its a memory foam type, just cut it up into manageble chumks with a Stanley Knife. A double will easily fit in a Fiesta cut up.

If it has Springs in, just cut the fabric away with the Stanley knife, and then cut across the wire framework holding all the springs together with pliers, wire cutters etc and once again into manageble chunks.

Either method does not take long to do.

Far better than wrestling with a mattress doubled up and trying to force it into a small car.

If no roof rack but the tip isn't far & the car is 4 door chuck it on the roof & strap through the rear windows & over the roof.

I normally fold it in half and tie it with what ever I can find then drag it on to the back seat and take it the local TIP.

Or

Leave it in the street outside your house and report it as being fly tipped, it will be gone in a day or 2.

Lifes departure lounge NN9 Northamptonshire East not West MidlandsMidlands

I am about to change 2 king size mattress for new ones,

My local council will take 5 items for £45, if I go down that route it will enable me to get rid of 3 large plastic chairs ex my now defunct Nail Salon as well which have been cluttering my patio up, and also take the old mattress,s.

Not worth the bother of trying to get them into my car.
