Though I’m third gen Black British, I feel strongly connected to my family’s Jamaican heritage. It has been a huge part of my upbringing, my cultural tastes, food, music etc. I love the impact that Jamaica and Jamaican culture has had on Black British culture and British culture more generally.

So today I’m going to listen to some Beres Hammond, some Vybz Kartel, drink some rum, maybe a magnum, make some Ackee for dinner and I’m going to tell my daughter about Jamaica.

Out of many, one people.

Happy Independence Day.

I'll tell you what I see when I look in the mirror... That Jamaican Independence Day is a vibrant celebration that embodies the spirit and culture of the Jamaican people. I love this day because it is a testament to the resilience, pride, and unity of the nation. The festive atmosphere, filled with reggae music, traditional dances, and mouth-watering Jamaican cuisine, brings people together in joyous harmony. Bob Marley's timeless music often fills the air, reminding everyone of the powerful role reggae has played in promoting peace and unity worldwide. The day also evokes memories of national pride, such as the iconic story of the Jamaican bobsleigh team immortalised in the film "Cool Runnings." This story showcases the determination and ingenuity of Jamaicans, symbolising the country's ability to excel and inspire against all odds. Celebrating Jamaican Independence Day is a way to honour the nation's rich heritage, cherish its progress, and envision a bright future, making it a truly special occasion for all Jamaicans and admirers of the culture.

Happy Jamaican Independence Day!!

Not one single country who has gained independence from Britain has asked for their dependency to be resumed - and there are many - yet, in a supposedly 'voluntary union', a dependent country must still ask permission to hold a referendum.

It's a very empty (and weired) feeling when you have no family left in your parents country. It feels like that connection has ended. It's something I have thought about before but luckily my sister still lives in Trinidad.
