Noticed the other day the British library are beginning to amass Every page from every site in the UK. Over a billion entries a year which cab be accessed by the public at some venues.
So multiple questions here ...will it alter your use of fab knowing it will be recorded?
Will this be flagged up by government agencies and used as yet another firm of spying on us. No doubt google and co will be sifting through these records.
Lastly...could these records (ie forum threads) one day be used as evidence in a court of law. For instance abuse or trolling as can be witnessed on todays mrs t threads. With people getting 4 yes for posting about last years riots could we one day face jail for a comment on fab??
Too many issues of privacy here my heads busted |

there is the 'web' and there is the 'deep web'. The deep web consists of database information that is accessed by websites such as fabswingers.
a fabswingers profile is bascially an entry on a database. if you choose to make your profile public (via fabswingers settings) then the british library might archive your page.
there is already a system called the waybackmachine where you can go back in time and view web pages from decades ago. |

Simple rules I've always stuck by!
Don't post anything in chat/forums/pm's you wouldn't say to someone's face.
And don't put anything in your profile/pics you'd ever worry about the public seeing.
That - and change your settings to avoid browser searches.
If you do something that leaves you open to 'abuse' or reprehension - then you've only really got yourself to blame! |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
I mentioned this last week.
The front page of Fab is likely to make the archive but your profile won't unless it widely available on the web.
When the British Library started this process 7 or 8 years ago they started slowly. I remember the letter asking for permission to add my organisation's web-site to the archive early on and we went through questions about would be archived and what left out. |

This new initiative is documenting every page of every site in the UK for the next yr and every subsequent year. Privacy settings won't affect this they see every page. Also if you delete your fab profile any forum post still remains.
My thoughts are this is so open to abuse. Not just targeted advertising etc but governments inventing data or even modifying it after the event.
Definitely makes me think about what I post or write on profile knowing it can be seen by anyone who cares to search for it |

I would hope you would think about what you post anyway.
The British Library has always archived every publication in the UK - the ranty letter to your local paper lives on forever. As we now publish on line it is logical that they would want to collect that too. If it has the effect of ensuring people think before posting then it may have a perversely good effect on the web. |

Not bring funny - but your profile reads like thousands of others, contains no identifiable pictures (unless your cocks been on crime watch!) and no personal information anyone could use to say " look - its Derek from no. 23!!!!"
What exactly are you worried about? |

Or perhaps the opposite and an intrusion. I can imagine employers using this and finding you were logged on a sex site etc years ago and passing you over. Or when I win the lottery and the press looking for muck! |

My main thought is will this be used in court some day. I recall the guy who d*unkenly posted on Facebook 'yah! let's have a riot'. He removed it the following morning and then got four years. after seeing some of the posts today...the twitter row a couple months back it seems you can be jailed fir any trivial frivolous comment. We all uo in arms when government want to monitor calls and texts yet as this is an academic institution its seen as a good thing. We are already monitored too much. |

If you post in work time, and on work equipment, then change your behaviour. If this leads to loads of people abandoning the web and twit twat then I will think about it again. I don't see that happening.
I have always accepted that being on the web, generally, and on here, particularly, could mean that people might contact me or say something about me. I am open about what I do and not open to bribery or muck-raking. |

The slight difference with bookface is that it shows your name, face and endless personal info!
Since here all you need is some non identifiable pics, a few lines of text and an email address (that most will have created solely for this purpose!) - how could you ever be identified and outed by the press? |

I assume as they are collating every page from every site this will include everything on here. So that means your verification photos. Your face pics which have been sent on pm. No doubt even stills of cams.
I in myself am not too fussed don't care if they know im a slut. Its just the wider privacy issue and in particular the future use of the data that intrigues and worries me. Not to mention sites where you may store pics of family members, children etc such as flicker and fb |
