Toddlers ears being pierced

I walked past a shop the other day in town to see a young mum probably in her late teens about to get her daughters ears pierced.

The girl was only young not even 2. I was shocked and upset thinking of the sudden pain the mum was subjecting the little one too for cosmetics.

What are other peoples feelings on this?

No child should be pierced, when they are older they can choose for themselves. I can't stand seeing people treating their children like dolls!

I have 2 girls and personaly don't agree with it at that age........its entirely for the mothers pleasure as the poor little mite isn't even old enough to make an informed decision about it.

I think girls should be old enough to look after their piercings themselves, they grow up quick enough these days without extra help from us.

I'm the only one of us mums who hasn't had our daughters ears pierced. I remember a friend saying to me when her little girl was about a year old how much she hated taking her to have her injections done at the doctors and literally 5 minutes later saying she was having her ears pierced the next day

I wish it would be illegal til the child goes to high school at least

It's just plain wrong. Should be the child's decision when he/she is old enough to decide. Why is this even 'legal'? What's next, toddlers with pierced navels or tongues?!

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

I had my ears pierced at 7. It was what I wanted and my gran took me to have it done. My daughter was also 7 - again she asked for it to be done. It was done at the GP's surgery with sterile equipment. She has since had further piercings but only in her ears. She did want her nose piercing but I said only after she had left school. She changed her mind about that one.

Utter bollocks if there's a risk then social services would simply attend with the police!! Absolutely no social worker wound turn a blind eye to child abuse because they're "too frightened". As always social workers get a battering but what about the shit parents of even the tattooist that did it or any of the other professionals with a duty of care that the child comes in contact with!!!!

And it's highly unlikely that the courts or the police would do anything about it and at the end of the day only they have the powers to remove a child!!

My two girls wanted theirs done for ages so i took them and they decided not to at the last minute. Fair enough. Few months later they came to me and told me they definitely wanted them done, so took them and they both sat perfectly still, didnt move or cry or anything they love them.

As for seeing babies and toddlers getting theirs done, i dont agree there. Theyre too little for that

I think it should be illegal until they are mature enough. Babies and toddlers are too young to give consent.

When they get to high school they are more mature and want to express their personality with earings. Any younger than that and no.

I work with children and my opinion is it should be illegal til high school age.

I was 9 when I get my ears done, and then nothing further til I got my nose pierced at 15. My parents made me wait until I was old enough to look after them myself.

My work often involves social services and I'm sorry but in my experience they're lazy and utterly useless. I've seen people in desperate need ignored and left to suffer because a social worker cannot be bothered to pay a visit or return numerous phone calls, emails and letters.

The system is broken and needs a complete overhaul, starting at the top.

Well you've clearly been very unlucky as I've always had positive interactions with social services and as for lazy that's a joke they are one of the most overstretched overworked services I know alongside the health service often putting in 70 plus hours a week to try keep on top of the workload.

Yes I totally agree the system needs a complete overhaul but its not down to the social workers in the majority of cases but the overriding beaurocracy and government agendas that hamper them!!! I think the saying is too many chiefs and not enough Indians!!!

Maybe in Yorkshire but here in Leicestershire I'm constantly fighting for social worker reviews for my patients and I'm constantly met with excuses even when the social workers have been instructed to attend by their senior management.

When they do attend meetings and reviews their subsequent letters and communications bear little relevance to what has been discussed because they're disinterested and too lazy to take notes.

I even had one tell me she had been on holiday for four months and then couldn't attend a meeting because her car had broken down, I told her if she could afford a four month holiday then surely she could afford to keep her car on the road, sure enough, after a phone call to her manager she turned up...

I was actually 3 months old when I had mine done! Obviously I had no choice in the matter but my mum had gone to the doctor and he agreed to do the piercing. I think she had to sign a certificate. I'm 46 years old now and they are still pierced. I have four daughters who are all grown up. Only one has pierced ears and she had turned 13 and had asked my permission. I think for my mum it was certainly a cultural thing which she tried to encourage me to do with my daughters. I was totally horrified at the idea of subjecting them to unnecessary pain but she felt that by doing this at a young age there would be less pain than if they are older. I disagree. I think she wanted to follow a tradition.

I work with adults with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour,I've never found their social workers helpful. Some of the questions they ask just make us laugh. Yet when my mum fostered teens the social workers she dealt with were great.

I think it should be illegal until they are at least 12. On one or two occasions, I've walked past Claire's Accessories to see young Mum's trying to restrain their distressed screaming babies while the staff attempt to pierce their ears. I know the guns aren't exactly painful but I feel it's a stressful and unnecessary experience for youngens who don't have a say.

I had mine pierced as a Baby but took them out at the age of 6 and point-blank refused to have them. Didn't wear earings again until I was 18.

In the grand scheme of things, I don't think it's that big of a deal. Not like they are chopping off a limb.

If I had a kid, would I get them done? Probably not, but that is not because I'm outraged by it, I just think it's unnecessary.

The only think one truly owns in this life is one's body and on that principle I don't think children who cannot make these decisions for themselves should undergo body modification in any way, shape or form. I'd prefer legislation to make it unlawful for under-16s to be pierced or tattooed.

The tattooist should always ask for id, and also log the clients name, the work, done and possibly contact details in case of future problems. If the person getting the tattoo provides false age documents then they have broken the law (the artist is not liable for prosecution), if the tattooist knowingly works on someone under 18 then they have broken the law. The fines can be quite excessive.

I remember being horrified when I took my baby daughter to the local clinic and babies of both sexes had pierced ears. I made her wait till she was at senior school before I would get her ears pierced and she was 17 before I'd let her get second holes pierced.

"In the grand scheme of things, I don't think it's that big of a deal. Not like they are chopping off a limb.

If I had a kid, would I get them done? Probably not, but that is not because I'm outraged by it, I just think it's unnecessary. "

I think the same really. Whilst I don't like seeing babies with their ears pierced, I'm not outraged by it. I don't see it quite as dramatic as abuse. Parents do it for their own thrill, there are lots of clothes that parents will dress their babies in which are mini versions of an adults clothing, little jeans, baby Nike trainers, that kind of thing, whilst piercing is body modification and does involve pain, so is therefore more serious than sticking a pair of jeans on your baby, it is done for the parents' benefit to get pleasure out of making their baby look cute.

It doesn't make it right and I also feel there should be age appropriate restrictions to it, but I don't think its abuse.

I think its only ears that youngsters can have pierced, there are age restrictions on other forms of piercing, you couldn't get your babies belly button pierced etc.

The tattoo issue then I agree should be over 18s only and is the case. But that's not saying that 15 year olds won't find someone that isn't a tattooist who will tattoo them in a mates kitchen, that kind of thing.

My son had his ear done a lil while ago whilst in town im not a fan and was pretty mad he had been allowed to walk into a shop and do it at 15...he wants one of these stretchers in now.

I had a tattoo done at 16 with no id just waltzed in and got it done....but 12 years later i was having cover ups...I think tattooing should be over 18 only.

"No child should be pierced, when they are older they can choose for themselves. I can't stand seeing people treating their children like dolls!"

It is.

The myth is that you can have one at 16 with parents consent, its total bollocks. You MUST be 18 in this country to get a tattoo legally.
