Reminds me of the wonderful fun threads we had going in 2012 watching it together wherever we were.

I think it's really special on the river. In its legend, Paris is a boat. There so much more symbolism with the different places near the Seine.

I can see parts of this opening ceremony being recreated like having the athletes paraded up the river thanes before they enter the Arena.

I remember an old documentary about 2012 and the Chinese organiser committee adviced Londonn not too copy but to highlight what you do best. GB could not spend 1billion on an opening ceremony but she took inspo and detailed britain.

The piano on fire sas interesting - assume it was a voice recording rather thsn being sung live?

The mechanical horse was excellent - they could have made it even by using jets of water to simulate it running on water

Good idea, perhaps overly ambitious, poorly executed in parts, disjointed, no regard for weather vagaries.....but the automatron horse, Eiffel tower light show and cauldron balloon looked good. Shame they hoisted the Olympic flag upside down.

"We started watching it, it was a bit boring for us, we saw the Jamaican team and then went on to tell my stepson about the Jamaican bobsled team and he was like "what" so we just had to put cook runnings on obviously 😂.

We managed to see the end and see the queen that is Celine Dion. "

Your comment reminded me of the time I was in Paris and Cool Runnings was the massive hit film of the time. So the Paris cinema I walked past were also showing it. But... as they often do around the world... they'd changed its title from "Cool Runnings" to - the way more superior - one of "Rasta Rocket"

Haven't cringed this much since watching it's a Royal knockout.

For a reported 120 million Euros it was underwhelming, tried too hard and was disjointed.

Couple of good bits but not many..

I thought it was a confused mess. Some highlights including Lady GaGa and Celine Dion, plus the Eiffel Tower lights were impressive and the balloon cauldron was great. But not a patch on London 2012.

"

The piano on fire sas interesting - assume it was a voice recording rather thsn being sung live?

The mechanical horse was excellent - they could have made it even by using jets of water to simulate it running on water

I went to bed so need to find a highlight program with the cauldron! "

The whole thing should be on iPlayer
