I had backed it to go into extra time, it nearly did. We should have been more alert to the danger of Williams, imo the man of the match. Given way too much space for the first goal. It’s going to be lively on the streets of Berlin tonight. |

"This isn't an England dig but more of a general post tournament musing....
Last 2 euros have had seriously lopsided round of 16 draws"
That’s the fault of teams that are expected to win groups. If they don’t, that will load one side heavily. England had two tournaments where that’s happened, and they’ve capitalised to get to finals. |

"Spain have been by far the best team.
Gareth gone?"
Gareth will go, and it's time. He's far too conservative, we can all see that.
But he's a decent and honourable man, who's delivered more for England than any other manager since Ramsey. |

Previous one was like a home tournament and this one only had one tough game - that was today. |

Exactly, I thought England played well in this final so credit due but have had easy routes to finals last two euros has the draw been more balanced they wouldn’t be anywhere near the final. Just gives false hope |

And to be fair I think he had changed the conversation and attitude around the England team. |

Last 3. Portugal's side of the draw in 2016 featured the likes of Belgium, Croatia and Wales, while on the other side of the draw there was all 5 European WC winners in France, Italy, Spain, Germany, England (and of course the mighty Iceland )
It's been a terrible addition to the tournament to allow 8 weaker teams to join in. It's made the knockout stage so much more watered down and seems to always gives an easy path to one of the finalists! |

Yip your dead right actually I'd forgotten 2016s draw.
Back to a 16 team tournament |

Yes, he's a decent and honourable man but he hasn't won anything which is the same as every other manager since Ramsey. Let's not try and get away from the reality of the situation |

We had them on the ropes… equalised… and stopped playing again "
Pickford kept the score down, England would of been 2-0 if it wasn't for him and then again after that |

Croatia ‘18 - bottled it, Italy ‘20 - bottled it. Tonight - beaten by the only good team we’ve played in this tournament. When your main asset as a manager is luck, there’s not much left when it runs out |

I mean, possibly. Not sure losing on penalties last time counts as "bottling it", but we can agree to disagree in that.
I'm not a fan - he's too defensive - but no other manager has managed even to get an England team to a major final since 1966 and we can't suggest that's not a major shift from his predecessors. |

I think there's a job for him somewhere in the FA if he does decide to step down. |

I don't think the bottling came from the penalties but how we played after going 1-0 up. We had chances but still tried to sit back when Italy were there for the taking. Southgate still did a brilliant job considering where we were when he started, but it's definitely time for new ideas. |

I think we all wanted an England win (well most of us) but deep down a lot of us knew that Spain would win. They were unbeaten, they played amazingly well as a team whereas England were shocking for the most part. They played terribly as a team, no real instructions and no real coaching but fair play for getting to the final. A well deserved Spain win and hopefully greener pastures for England under new management. England has the squad and arguably the best team on paper if you look at all the talent. They just need some real coaching. |

Yep, can't agree more that he is too defensive a manager. He'll go, and rightly so.
Shows how far we've come though that 2 Euro finals in a row with a WC semi too is somehow not considered success for England. We still cream ourselves over 1990 and 1996 and he's outdone both of those 'greats'. |

It was a very good tournament. The gap between the traditional big teams and minor teams has definitely shrunk.
England needed to play to their strengths which is fast attacking football without fear. But some players looked tired.
Kane did not offer much of an outlet when needed hence the uplift woth the subs but overall the future looks bright.
I also think Southgate will go. He took too much criticism for the 1st three games. |

If England are going to play to the strengths you mention, we need shot of Southgate. His game is too defensive, and tactically negative. |

Exactly, this has essentially been England's greatest run in our living memory and Southgate and the culture he set is a big reason for that. But it does need to be replicated on the pitch too. |

From a non football fan perspective the England fans and press need to get their act together. The love and the hatred of the manager in every championship they play in makes me wonder why the hell anyone wants the job. |

Every manager in football gets scrutinised to this level. Its the perks of the job. Just look at what happened with Arsene Wenger. In the glory days he was the worlds most loved manager, but as soon as the club started underperforming he became the worlds most hated. When managers become managers, they expect this level of scrutiny. Its the same treatment that football players get too. Theres a reason that theyre paid ridiculous amounts of money. |
