Spitfire? Hurricane?
Jump to: Newest in thread
We used to live near the Spitfire & Hurricane mueum in Thanet and the aircraft would regularly fly over for a display. The sound of Merlin engines is unforgetable.
However, for functionality and sheer lethality, there can only ever be the Harrier. |

"Vulcan, spitfire, SR71
If you can get to the IWM in Duxford it's a sight to behold, the blackbird is just too cool.
I saw the Blackbird fly at the Mildenhall airshow many years ago "
Woah that's amazing |

As wars tend to be won by attrition and things like Typhoon and F35* are all too expensive, affordable combat aircraft are the only way to survive.
If you can make 20 of yours to 1 of theirs, you’ll win.
Enter the brutish A10 and the beautiful Saab Grippen. |

"Something else?
What's your fave warplane?
Vulcan
Incredible aircraft "
When I was a teenager, I was invited into the cockpit of a Vulcan by an ex pilot
He took me and my friend through a simulated mission
It was fascinating
One thing that sticks in my mind is that they weren't built for survivability - if something went wrong, the chance of the crew getting out was minimal - the cockpit blew off so the flight crew had the best chance of survival - the guys 'below deck' however, were pretty much 'attrition' |

Let's not forget the unsung Douglas DC-3 (or C-47 to give it it's military designator)
Without this workhorse - some of which are still in commercial service to this day - the map of Europe may have looked very different |

"Any airfix model from the 70's
Some of those are very impressive that you see all painted up and such.
That’s my hobby, and I’m particularly good at it if I do say so myself"
I've painted a few over the years, but with limited skill and varying quality results |

Did much of my early travelling on Dakotas. TB,TC,UD and YJ, all Jersey based. Much later went on a pleasure flight over London in one from Biggin Hill airshow but can't recall which it was, probably PO or PY workimg out of Coventry. Well worth the memory ride. |

If we're talking piston engined prop planes? Focke-Wulf FW 190. Beautiful plane and a feared adversary.
Jet fighter? Sukhoi SU-35. Sexy design and possibly the best current fighter in the world.
Bomber? Tupolev TU-160. Possibly the sexiest plane ever made.
Commercial aircraft? The Queen of the skies herself, Boeing 747 |

Anyway, back to the topic of Spitfires, my father flew one with 234 squadron defending Portsmouth and Southampton during August 1940 so my loyalty is lies with that aircraft.
I see Spitfires almost daily at this time of the year, usually they come perving over Eureka's swimming pool, presumably using it as a landmark! |

It is an iconic plane with a very distinct design Definitely in my top 3 for piston engined prop planes. Love the sound it makes! |

Having walked under one. B52 (that is a beast)
F14 Tomcat, obviously
SU 27, I saw one at an airshow. It went vertical, stopped dead in the air, fell backwards, turned and then zoomed off (imagine the first flight scene from Iron Man, but not as close to the ground!)
Loads others to mention being a airplane nerd

Modern stuff aside. I am currently working my way through the behemoth that is the 1/32 Lancaster
A 1m wingspan, and nearly the same in length. |

Ufff! I’ve been salivating over that kit for a long time, if I had the space and the funds I did build Tamiya’s 1/48 Lanc many years ago, and that was a shelf hogger at that scale. |

I think we'd get on like a house on fire... 100s of Airfix kits ready to build, 10s already in build process at different stages. I'm also full-time RAF and a right old plane geek... |

"Mention should be made of the Blackburn Skua. The first raf plane to shoot down an enemy plane in WWII.
Fleet Air Arm not RAF"
Absolutely, I stand corrected. And as we're talking of the Fleet air arm, we should mention the sea fury. Prop driven but shot down a jet in Korea.

I imagine it is very cathartic once you master the skills |

Love anything so ahead of it's time. Definitely an F16 then. F117 nighthawk. And the daddy, the SR-71.
But love the sheer purposefulness of an A10 thunderbolt. Love an Apache helicopter for the same reason.
Have soft spot for C130 Hercules.
Sorry but the Typhoon leaves me a bit cold. Don't know why. |

Yes

Much the same here although my all time favourite is a Vulcan, I went to the Swansea air show the year before its final flight and the presence it had was unrivalled by the other aircraft, the noise it made as the pilot opened the taps up was haunting too..
I just wish I saw it with my own eyes rather than watching it through the camcorder as I tried to capture it.. |

Which variant?
The 2000C is a beauty from any angle you care to look. Ive got a great example built in my collection. |

Saw the Vulcan at RIAT . A while later it was at Brize Norton I got by the fence at the bottom of the runway. They flew over and went off . They came back after a while and did their own air show fantastic before coming it to land . Got some good photos some with the bomb doors open |

For the the Harrier beats all others. It look stunning, could take off and land vertically, and was extremely hard to fly. With no compters, it was all down to pilot skill.
Also, it appeared in the third best Bond movie ever.... True lies |

There is something addictive about watching/ hearing them doing circuits at an airfield.
Same with their cousin, the Orion. It must be the engine sound. |

"Hawker Tempest
SR71 Blackbird
The Tempest and the Fury used to appear at shows as a duo and were always impressive climbers.
I guess they are long since retired but hopefully still in existence."
There is only one airworthy Tempest at the moment, returned to flight in 2023. You may have seen a Fury & Sea Fury, which have both been around for a while. |

I decided to introduce my grandson to modelling when he showed an interest a few years back. He got more interested in another Xbox game half way through, and there are now two part built Spitfires, paints and glue in a box on top of the wardrobe. |
