I just got my first ever “you look good for someone who’s pushing 40”
This is it isnt it, the slippery slope of backhanded compliments, that’s all I have to look forward to. Stop the world, I want to get off |

I think a lot of people are still stuck in the mindset of 40s and 50s being ancient when a 40/50 year old these days is VERY different from a 40/50 year old in the 1980s or 90s |

"Oh you're almost middle aged? I wouldn't have guessed from your avatar. You're looking good for your age OP, it's nice others see it."
I have my mum to thank for the anti ageing gene! But thank you |

Or is just your perception of 40/50 year olds that has changed as you get closer to that age bracket? |

I hate to say it, but 40/50s is ancient.... |

Yes! They remember their parents and grandparents at a similar age and compare.
Also people look at clothes and hairstyles and infer age from them. A photo of a 39 year old from 1970 automatically looks old because it's old fashioned |

I wouldn’t say so, one simple explanation is the increase in people hydrating themselves with things other than coffee, also the decrease in smoking and generally healthier lifestyles.
A deeper explanation in regards to perception certainly in the case of millennials is that by 40 a lot of us aren’t married with 4 kids and a fully paid off house, but that’s another topic entirely |

Totally agree 40/50 seemed older in the years gone by, if that makes sense, however I'm starting to think when people say you are not that old, they obviously think 57 is old! If age is just a number, why do so many lie on fab profiles about their age? |

True. I’m 36 so I’m not far behind you but I still get told I look like I’m in my 20s and I’m immature as fuck so can sort of pull it off. |

Age is also a mindset, if you’re young at heart then you tend to exude youthfulness, I’ll get slightly meta here and say that if you’re angry all the time and consumed with hate then that manifests itself into an aged appearance like that Paul Golding lad from Britain First

"Oh, OP. It gets far worse. A few weeks ago someone told me I was "old but stunning".
Better than being told you're old and ugly though, surely? "
True, but as it's fab they were probably just trying to get me into bed because they can't find someone their own age. |

I'm 67 and 27 years ago knew nobody of 40 with a fully paid off house or four kids for that matter. |

Or maybe they thought you were stunning (which you kind of are to be fair) and couldn't believe you're as o... the age you are. |

I'm being tongue in cheek, but I do find it amusing when someone qualifies a compliment with a reference to my age. At least MOST people refrain from pointing out that I could "shave years off it" by covering my grey |

I regularly get told I'm lying about my age and there's no way I'm as old as I am.
I keep fit and live clean and stay active. Simple....
I used to be flattered by the various remarks, but now I simply sit in my arm chair and have a Horlics |

My most visible sign of ageing is that when I go to a gig or live performance I’ve progressively stood further away from the stage as the years have gone by, now I’m starting to eye up the balcony seats
That and the greys in my beard |

Not from my perspective. Maybe ask a 19 year old, I thought anyone over 30 was ancient when I was 19 |

The backhanded compliment I get is about looking good for a disabled person. Age hasn't (yet) come into it! |

I used to like teasing my Dad with "sprightly" but you can't really joke with him anymore, he just gets confused. |

Age has never been an issue or barrier for me I think when I hit 50 had a mini identity crisis but got over it quickly.
Sometimes people tell you you look great for your age, they are trying to compliment you so don’t take offence. I just say thanks you look alright for your age too |

Aww.
I always imagine a woman with a tight, grey perm, crimplene slacks and a nice blouse who volunteers at the library. |
