I agree with that. Guess we were more innocent at that age and never looked at it as a contact game.

We had that banned too. So we replaced it with legups same rules, but you get booted to the ground instead. They just kind of gave up on us after that.

"44 see ya"

I find the regional differences in names & rules for these games fascinating.

Down south we had 2 variants of this...."40 40 Home" & "Run outs"

They're both essentially the same game, except our particular version of 40 40 didn't require the "it" person to tag/touch anyone, just seeing them was enough, but they weren't allowed to just hang around the home base (which we called "cat-guarding").

Run outs however did require a tag, which rendered the guarding strategy ineffective.

"44 see ya,, i havent heard of that one,,"

One person was 'It' and the others were hiders. It stays at the home base, e.g. a tree and counts to 44 with eyes shut (supposedly). Everyone else runs of and hides. Once It has counted to 44, they call out 'coming ready or not' and goes off to find the hiders. If It sees a hider they run back to home and try to touch the tree. The hider also races back and tries to touch the tree before It. Any of the other hiders can also chance their luck and try and get back to the tree even when not spotted. At some point, It will call out '44 seen ya', but I can't remember if it's when someone is spotted, or if its when they touch the tree.

Anyone fancy a game?

No, the one where you stick a stick (or a lollypop stick from a Cider Barrel) into a piece of dog turd and try to get him with it.

East Surrey

Used to play 40-40 with the kids who lived near me.

Or Foxes, Horses and Hounds. Bit like Bulldog, there'd be a 'catcher' in middle of the space and one kid would shout either 'Foxes!' and try to make it to the other side of the space by themselves; 'Horses!' and name another kid to run with, or 'Hounds!' and everyone would run. Anyone who was caught, then became a catcher. First person to be caught was the catcher in the next round. The winner was the last kid to be caught.

Hated it, as I was a little fat kid who didn't run very fast. I was always first to be caught.

.

That or we'd just scoot round on our bikes, and make up little games, or pretend we were doing stuff, like going on holiday. We'd ride round the block, and when we got back to base, we'd be at our destination...

The joy of imagination in kids...

Hide-and-seek seek is different as you don't have to run back to the base before the person that you have found.
