i agree but as a single guy, i just want to go out for a beer or two in a normal english pub, yes accept most pubs make there money from food, but the true enlish pubs our dissapearing fast !!! |

Several in my town have been converted to flats and a few more have become convenience stores.
I think the traditional British pub is a dying tradition. The ones that are managing to survive seem to be those that serve food (usually as part of a chain) and by doing so, lose their unique identities. I'm not sure what can be done about it though - they're in competition with cheap supermarket beer and with the economy the way it is, a lot of people just stay at home and have a few cheap bevvies in front of the telly. |

Lovely pub just up the road.
Been going since I was 16(shhhs!)
Lovely friendly banter in the bar, nice food in the lounge
Can't beat the great British pub, forget your troubles, have a drink with great people |

Im pleased to say I played a part in the fairly recent re opening of a pub close by where I live..has made headline news as it was unusual for a pub that had been closed for over 2 years to re open and be as successful as it is. Proper real ale pub. No food, no music, no tv, no pool. A great place to enjoy a good pint and a chat. It had won 3 awards on first year. Sorry if this sounds like an ad. Im just all for bringing back the good old British pub. X |

I havent checked recently however the number of pubs across the country closing on a weekly basis was averaging at 35,,, , I cant see any reasons for that number to have reduced,,

Super bloody markets..
I can buy a case of fifteen Fosters for a tenner in Tesco,
I would not be able to buy three pints in our local.
They cannot compete.
So people guzzle at home with no one watching over them and probably way over the drink drive limit the next morning . |

They've been outpriced and alcohols over taxed
I remember as a kid you couldnt throw a stone without hitting a pub in my village, now there's 3 and there going down hill |

I can understand why pubs are closing at the rate they are went for a pint with a mate on Monday night 2 pints of real ale came to £8.19 a pint of fosters was £3.99 a pint. Won't be drinking in that pub again |

it has village hall rather ran a town hall, so don't think we qualify for an upgrade yet! Things move slowly down here  |

all over the uk you will find various price for a drink
weather spoons are usually the best good grub n decent pint at a right price £2.30p
my local is now £2.80 a pint less than 5 mins walk |

we thought that this was going to happen a famous pub were i am - we have got in operation a tesco being build but no work yet starting till august the land is flat now an ready - thankfully we still have our great wee pub |

A pub near me closed when the owners retired, they had run it into the ground. it was purchased by the local residents and they managed to turn it around and is doing very well now. Staffed by volunteers and not tied to a big chain do free to do their own things.
My local closed last year, after a long weekend drinking the place dry, everything had to be guzzled by 9am Monday as that's when the developers where pulling it down. |

Enterprise Inns,Punch Taverns,Metropolitan et al started buying up vast swathes of pubs in the 80's
Companies run by posh boys with absolutely no interest or understanding of British pubs.
My dad saw the writing on the wall and got out of it after pubs being in the family for 60 odd years.
They've now worked out the profit margins are far bigger in gambling so they've moved into that.

My local had a nice carvery restaurant & did great grub until the licence changed hands. The head chef decided he didn't like being told what to do & buggered off. After that the carvery got pretty poor. Those that used to eat there simply didn't bother going back even for the beer - no surprises there as the choice was poor and quality worse. The place became a mecca for druggies.
The licence changed hands again and the new guy decided to close the place for a while to allow some changes to be made. New decor, new furniture, AND the carvery had been turned into a Thai restaurant. The restaurant is doing very well but the wet sales side is struggling. The prices are average but choices limited. Requests to the landlord to widen the range of drinks have fallen on deaf ears. Pity because I'm sure the place cannot stay viable on food alone.
How much longer before the druggies return and a new chapter is needed? |

Witherspoons doesn't sell cheap beer ,
thats the price all pubs could charge if it wasn't for the premiums that punch , enterprise etc adds to the cost to landlords . for once it's not the governments fault it's the greedy fatcats at these companies .
