Should fruit be kept in the fridge?
Jump to: Newest in thread
Simply follow what supermarkets do - if you get it from the fridge, it goes in the fridge, if you get it from a shelf, you can leave it out of the fridge.
Although thinking about it, cucumber and tomatoes we put in the fridge after picking from the shelf
We’d only leave some fruits that usually go in the fridge out to ripen next to a banana.

The purpose of refrigerating fruit is to minimise loss of moisture, so typically, the thinner the skin the better they keep if chilled. Soft fruits (berries and grapes) keep longer if refrigerated. Citrus tend to have a waxy coating as do apples, so don’t need chilling. The only exception is if the skin has been cut, so once a melon has had a slice taken off, it’s kept in the fridge as there’s a large surface area that has no outer skin.
Bananas should not be put in the fridge and kept away from other fruit. |

Don't stick your banana in the fridge, melons are fine.
Started using frozen berries for my porridge in the morning, they work out cheaper, there's no waste and I read online there's more goodness than there is in the fresh ones as they get frozen straight after they come off the bush whereas the fresh ones start losing their goodness while sitting on the shelves. |

I followed a tip online, instagram I think. Put your whole limes and lemons in a glass jar, or jug, of water, then in the fridge and they last weeks.
Cherry or baby plum tomatoes on the vine, last perfectly well all week in a dish on the worktop - even in this warm weather, and hold their flavour much better at room temp. But by experiment, larger tomatoes (also on the vine) don't last very long, so better in the fridge.
I also keep my eggs on the worktop and they're always fine. Mum and grandma before me always did without problem. |

"I keep celery and romaine lettuce in a bowl of water they keep growing and last ages, there's no need to take up room in the fridge where they lose their crispness."
I’ve already chucked the fruit and stocked up on chocolate and beer but that’s a good tip |
