Nope. My dad is a nice bloke, never nasty and did all he could but when it comes to budgeting money he couldn't do it, just whack it all on his plastic friend (I can't for the life of me remember), would walk into any shop for a browse and would come out with something new each time because he couldn't say no to a salesman when they asked if he needed help, the TVs we went through lol. |

My dad until he passed away when I was 21 and after that I made my own way.
I find it quite sad that anyone would have to look to the media or the world of celebrity for a role model.
I have no idea if there has ever been anyone who could be seen in that light because it's not a world I subscribe to. |

My late father use to work his backside off to put meals on the table and clothes on our backs.
Use to break my heart watching him fall asleep on his chair before we went to bed where he was so knackered.
But at weekends he would dedicate all his time to us all.
The best role model I ever had. |

My dad was only one I ever needed, did everything with me as a bairn he looked after me every night while my mam was at the bingo took me and mates over the fields with the dogs and air rifles got up with me Christmas mornings put me to bed at night and read me my favourite story later gave me a job learned me a trade and how to make a living for myself (I consider this the greatest gift of all) was a father figure to a few of my mates who never had fathers as well and all my close mates would visit him when I wasn’t there we would all meet at his house on Saturday to watch the football together. Was an amazing grandfather as well for the few years he got to be one to my kids |

The male role models I had as a kid were all abusive bullies. Fortunately, I chose someone thoroughly decent to have children with and my sons have a fantastic dad. He's kind, loving, fun, responsible, listens, has integrity, and they have a great relationship. He's the best possible person to have divorced |

"Did you have one growing up?
Do you think there's a shortage of main stream media role models, who offer a positive presence to young males?
Opinions please "
Very much so I did yes.
My dad, my uncles, friends parents, there were a lot of good role models to learn from both positive things and also things to avoid doing because the outcomes were not desirable. Additionally there were a couple of sports people that taught me anything worth having requires effort and not to be afraid of enjoying any success that might come your way.
I'm not sure that there are a lack of role models now. I just think now, the culture and environment is not the same, kids are not encouraged to seek wisdom and experience from others. And additionally those that are held and pushed by social media as role models are mostly just celebrities and as far from role models as could be. Rob burrow and Kevin sinfield are amazing role models (were in the case of Rob). There are also a growing number of role models for girls now. We just need to celebrate the proper role models more and the celeb worship ones less. |

"Dad and most teachers."
Not convinced about the teachers, one was a psychopath, another was done for exposing himself in the public toilets, and another was a kiddy fiddler. |

That was all quite negative, so to counter that...yes, I had positive role models with the youth group leaders, kids camps that I went on, and team leaders on projects that I was involved with in a gap year and at Uni. |

"My Grandad. He taught me all I needed to know being a young man growing up and I’d like to think I do him proud.
Nobody should be looking up to celebrities. "
Loads do though. We might as well encourage looking up to decent ones |

Yes my life has been full of positive role models from family to friends. Male and female. Mostly they taught me to be a strong independent woman. The rest I did for myself as no matter how strong a role model you only get out of life what you put in for yourself |

Jimmy Savile was probably a role model at one point. |

How do you propose stopping youngsters looking to celebrities as role models? |

I don’t. Telling youngsters what to do will always make them do the opposite. Let them make their own mistakes and they’ll no doubt realise their hero is a bit of a dick on their own. |

And hope they haven't spent years copying said role model and being a dick themselves. I think the reason we attempt to educate and inform and shape and create desire to be the best version of them they can be... Is to avoid them wasting time and energy being dicks. |

My maternal Grandad was the only one. My Dad was mainly a model of what not to do and my paternal Grandad was so much older that he was dead by the time I was 5 and so he didn't have chance to influence me really. I had no other real male role models to observe, bar teachers. Some of those were great, others much less so. |

There were loads! For me there were Male teachers, and tutors that looked out for me. Then there were the men at my Army Cadets that really helped me become a man. As well as various role models on TV. |

Not really I could point to some positive aspects, but it was mostly a rule of fear. The men I recall put far more into being understood than understanding and if you disagreed you did it their way anyway or faced some form of intimidation, punishment or humiliation. I learnt my times tables, how to fix stuff and how to take a beating from men.
Most of my beliefs and values have come from the women in my life, as a child, then peers and reading as I got older. They encouraged me to look to myself, my thoughts and feelings for direction, rather than try to be like someone else.
There's been some men I've respected and admired, logical men - science teachers - but I don't think I've ever had a role-model. My uncle taught me how to fight and a mate's older brother how to skin up - not sure that counts though. |

"If we’re relying on main stream media role models to positively influence our children then this country is well and truly fucked"
Oh it was fucked ages ago let's be honest.
This is the decadent stage now where everyone knows it's fucked and no longer cares. |
