Police Take out a Cow
Jump to: Newest in thread
https://news.sky.com/story/home-secretary-calls-for-urgent-explanation-as-police-car-is-filmed-running-over-a-cow-13153583
Reports that Police used a new tactic to capture a runaway cow. They rammed the bugger with their police car. Now Tom is a big fan of the police and also a wildlife lover. Could a less extreme tactic have been used? The police car will need repairs and this is public money. If Tom was the Chief of Police he would have found a local cow whisperer. What's going on here? It's all over the news |

Yes, but from the article Death and injuries caused by cattle: A forensic overview ...
In the United Kingdom, 74 people were killed by cattle (70% due either to bulls or newly calved cows). This has led cattle to be declared the most dangerous large animal in Britain |

"Did the police car have its blues and moos switched on?
like it sounds like bull though
Come on, we’ve “herd” them all before….."
lol. Did the police point their tazers at it and say
“Freeze-Sian”
some said “not again been here before got the T-shirt got the jersey” |

Apparently it’s outstanding in its field."

One lady witness said she couldn’t believe what she was seeing as it ran past-her-eyes.
She made a note in her dairy lol |

The fact that police acted in the way they did is frankly disgusting and disgraceful to see. Regardless of the circumstances (and for the record I’m not being a killjoy over this thread and its humour therein) the incident footage sets a piss poor example to society in general. The police driver, now suspended from duty, will hopefully be fully investigated and appropriate action taken if he is found to have breached minimum standards of conduct and care whilst on duty. |

I’ve been holding back with my views on this as a few weeks ago in london just round the corner from where I was the man was walking down the road with a samurai sword and the police just sat in the car and didn’t attempt to run him over as apparently they weren’t allowed to and he went on a killed a school child. Disgusting that they can run over an animal but can’t a human animal. It’s unbelievable. |

What’s the sentence ? Dangerous control of a mooving vehicle? As it was Surrey, the case will be herd at leatherhead crown court. |

And the news from the bbc this afternoon is that the leader of the farming union thinks the police probably did the right thing.
Sometimes there’s more to think about than the initial knee jerk reaction |

"And the news from the bbc this afternoon is that the leader of the farming union thinks the police probably did the right thing..."
Did anyone ever think otherwise? I mean other than the gutter press who like to make a drama out of anything and perhaps a few city dwellers who think of a cow as maybe a slightly large dog? What were the alternatives they wanted, shoot it? Maybe they though going up to it and saying there's a good cow, follow me? Cows kill people every year, in the UK. Sure in a field they're generally peaceful, but in a stressful environment it's quite likely to end up killing anyone who goes near it. |

You’re absolutely right but in a lot of social media circles I seem to be in, a lot of people were saying how bad it was and how they should have cleared people out of the way until someone could be found with a tranquiliser or something. All ridiculous things really. Of course if they hadn’t have done anything and a person had been charged down it would have been a different story “why oh why didn’t the police do something?” . Damned if they do, damned if they don’t |

I still think if it was half a ton of horse it would be a different reaction |

What is the difference between a cow and a horse? |

Hugh Broom, National Farmers' Union's South East livestock chairman, said while he recognised the situation looked "horrendous", officers' options were limited.
He told BBC Radio Surrey: "While the whole thing looks horrendous, and it is for everyone, they probably did the right thing at the time."

Still, I can't help but wonder if the police would have acted differently if it had been a white cow. |

Reports that the investigation into running the car down twice will not be handled by the Independent Office for Police Complaints. The local police will carry out their own investigation. Would it be ok to ram the animal if it were an escaped dog or a horse,? |

as a farmer I feel as though I can offer my 2 pence.....
The stirk (so not dully green, but still weighing roughly 100 to 300kg had been loose for 5 hours!
Firstly.....
Why was it allowed to be lose for thay amount of time? Cattle are unpredictable animals, I work with them on a daily basis, I know all our cattle well.... but I still wouldn't trust them, and I certainly wouldn't trust them when or if they are stressed or in a situation like this.....
On those 5 hours thay animal could of potentially hurt a LOT of people!
Like seriously hurt them.
They should of had the situation under control sooner, acted quicker and taken waaaaay more action than they did.
I've seen cattle escape from places like livestock auctions and within 20 minutes they had been shot.
Witch leads nicely to my second point.
Why was a police marksman not present at all in those 5 hours?
the animal should of been dispatched safely and quickly for the safety of the general public and the animal! If the police marksman wasn't available, why wasn't a large animal vet (who deals with cattle on a daily basis and who is trained and can use a dart gun) rung, they are trained for situations like this.
Of not a police marksman, or a vet, why wasn't a licenced slaughterman called for, they have a the 'humane dispatch of any animal' clause on their gun licence,
And where was the farmer who's stirk it was?
That entire situation could of been an absolute blood bath and could of ended so so horrifically, I've been the victim of a disagreement with an animal thay size, and have seen and known many other people who have been seriously injured and worse.
I hope the police have to face the actions of their consequences for allowing the situation to get to the point that it did. |

Hands down the most garbled comment I've ever written, I mean
Its not fully grown,
And that the police should have to face the consequences especially of their actions....
It's been a long 24hrs.
I need more sleep! |

Tom is going with the farmer on this one. Lots of armchair cattle experts here and a dairy farmer knows more about cows than Tom ever will. |
