Working with people who don't give a shit

Those people who are lazy and have an awful attitude only Interested in a pay packet and not doing a proper job.
Especially when you have to overcompensate by not only doing your job but covering their ass to ensure that it doesn't reflect badly on you. |

I have encountered many an individual like this over the years.
However, I can thankfully say now I don’t have such a problem.
We’re a small team so there’s nowhere to hide and we’re all as passionate as each other |

I work with quite a few youngsters and they work just fast enough not to be noticed, they are well practised at the art of doing just what necessary, I do hope they put more excitement and energy into sex or there’s definitely going to be a lowering of the birth rate |

I hear you there.
It's the amount if sick days certain people take that fuck me off, the same few, it's like they discuss who will be off next as they take it in turn.
If it's mot sickness it's an attitude of entitlement they have when asking for time off.
I have been having a lot of hospital and dental appointments lately usually either during my lunch hour or on my time off because I don't want to impact on work, still got more appointments upcoming and tempted to just book them for whenever because the people who book hen parties and pop concerts and expect the early finishes don't give a crap.

There are plenty that have tried it over the years with me OP. Plenty have tried… and failed.
Don’t cover for them. Help them if they need, yes. But doing their job for them? Not in a million years. Mwah x |

Gah! A post I can relate too! As someone who actually does her job properly, it really gets my goat when I come back from a day off and hardly anything is done or if it is done, it's half arsed, my autistic brain just can't cope with it and try as I might to go "I ain't doing it, wasn't my shift" I can't let my manager down and let her see things not done so I end up doing it and covering people's backs. Plus I'm a stickler for things to be in a line and looking presentable so on the off chance someone has topped the teas and coffees up, they have put the pg tips upside down, round the wrong way, I have to stand there and redo it all, don't just throw all the milks in for god sake! They stack and line up, how anyone can walk away and think "yep that looks ok" is anyone's guess when it looks like they have just thrown it on.

"My mantra has always been work smarter, not harder. So yeah, you'd hate me haha. If I can get payed doing bare minimum, I'm doing it "
That's fine if what you are doing doesn't affect others but if you say work smarter and someone else has to pick up your slack then it's not smarter it's just lazy.

Noone notices to be fair so doesn't really affect anyone. Just choose not to work myself silly like some do when we all get paid the same |

Work are legally obliged to give people a certain amount of time off. And if it’s for medical appointments, they can’t say no.
I don’t like the culture of having to “request” what they’re obliged to give people, or having to justify it in some way. |

I didn't think it was a legal obligation as I checked this ages ago with ACAS, they aren't legally obliged but employers have a duty to protect the health and wellbeing of their staff

I remember a guy who management weren't ready for, he got on with everyone and had one of those total surprise face when asked about something. He was doing his usual lazing around and got asked what he was doing by management, "thinking". It was one of those quiet office days and the honesty of reply just made you laugh, especially as the manager just accepted it and walked off.. anyone else would have been pulled. |

Speaking from experience. A lot of these people are trapped in their jobs, have issues, want a better life, hate the daily grind, have no freedom.
Our economy is terrible at assigning people jobs they will find meaningful and be effective at.
If you like your job consider yourself very lucky. |

I get that but I hated my job towards the end. I still did it though and got paid exactly the same as the people with half my success rate. |

It's not helped by lazy and inept management structures being unable to truly measure the performance of their workforce, preferring a series of box-ticking exercises over meaningful engagement with people below them in the pyramid.
Many managers are happy to see the conscientious people carry the rest of the workforce rather than effectively deal with the slackers and lead-swingers |

i worked with a guy who was 9-5 with an hour lunch. He sat in his car until a minute to 9 - walked into the office and offered to make everyone a hot drink, which, every day took him til at least 9.30 if not longer as it then meant they drank the tea chatting about whatever shit guys talk about.
He was doing the other part to the job i was doing mon-wed ... I lots count of how many 'tea' breaks he had, but he would always make for the office (pre covid) between 8 - 10 people in the office.
ten to 1 he would go for his 1-2 lunchbreak, returning a couple of minutes after 2 and the whole making tea again - we had to have staggered lunches due to the phone being answered!!
Every Monday i would spend the day doing the work he had not complete Thursday and Friday !!
They are every where he left !! umm I stopped doing the catch up stuff and it heaped up!
dont get mad, get even |

I think many don’t care these days
In 20 years working for myself not one of the lads I’ve had working with me (most of which are lifelong friends) not one I would trust to leave on a job, the few times I tried was disastrous
Left 2 mates demolishing an old kiktchen extension and the filled both wheelie bins with bricks as it was 10 ft closer than the skip
Left another mate to do a simple fence he cut the posts to save digging the hole when it inevitably blew down there was barely half a bag worth concrete on each post
My own son (not my actual son but raised him from 4) took 12 days to do 2 days work while I was in hospital after my heart attack spending all day on his phone to his girlfriend stupid thing is I paid him for all the days as well
Now I won’t leave anyone on the job as can’t trust no cunt |

This is very true. Their main concern is keeping the people above them happy by not telling them how bad things below them are. |

I work with a group of youngsters.
If your face doesn't fit, or your not good at your job. Goodbye.
Thankfully, I don't give a damm about them. Because if they try and pass off shoddy work. They get it thrown back at them.....some of the bollox they come out with: Assemblies that have gaps in them (I can't get it to fit, is that OK?) Nope.
But they are getting better.....and I'm learning off them sometimes....but bloody hell can they talk. |

I don’t really care how often someone has a doctor’s appointment or even what time I they start:/finish, they have performance objectives but I track carefully and we have a monthly one-to-one.
I always ask questions like are you staying or going?
If you are staying you’ll be rewarded well , have fun and adventures, travel but I expect high levels, it will be hard sometimes, there’s no room, you’ll be supported, but no room for mediocrity, laziness, procrastination or you will be going , and fast! it’s your choice

I work in a team of 4 and we are aged between 44-61 and we all have a good work ethic around the face to face work we do.Whilst I wish 2 of my work colleagues had my work ethic around the admin & support work we do as I find it a bit of a pain when I have to cover their support week when on leave. However the way I see it it’s up to my middle manager to sort out. |

and its great but it's finding that quality of worker in the first place, there are many that have more reasons for not doing things. to actually find someone to takes pride in what they do and works over and above what is expected because of that pride, is really hard.
It costs as much to train a good worker as it does a bad one, and often you dont realise how mediocre the are until its too late. Many can talk the talk!! |

Bosses at whatever age, my current boss is in his early 30's, whether they are caring or uncaring, are of no concern to me. What they need to be, is know their 'onions.' First and foremost....and never micro manage. |

I can and do support any of my team when required without being asked to.
You can see when someone is struggling and it's always nice to help out.
Theirs a big difference though between supporting someone and carrying them.
I'm a very easy going fella but I take zero crap from anyone with a shitty/ lazy attitude, I will always call them out in a very honest and direct manner.

If we are constantly stepping in to rectify or address other people's shortcomings at work, are we not enabling that behaviour by doing so?.
Would it not be better to have a quiet chat with them to one side, highlight how there behaviour affects everyone else on the team, then if doesn't improve, to then escalate it, to a line manager

This attitude boils my piss. Most people don't love their job. It's called WORK - not FUN - for a reason!
I work with a fair few folk in their 20's & they all have this attitude. They must instil it in them at school, 'cos they sure don't teach them basic grammar or maths |

It's intrinsic to our culture now.
I work for myself, I don't employ anyone and no one employs me. I still have to deal with people who don't do their job properly, on a daily basis.
Our human ingenuity is geared towards doing as little as possible and avoiding any liability that may arise from the consequences, by passing the buck onto someone else.
There's nothing we can do you need to speak to X. 3 hours later on hold there's nothing we can do you need to go back and speak to Y. There's more people employed doing that than there is people doing any actual work. |

I think some (maybe a lot) of people are wired that way but others have different motivations. Some people genuinely want to make a difference or maybe they see the job as part of a wider thing that they care about.
In my experience you want to find the people who care, for whatever reason, and then nuture them. The rest can just fuck off. |

I think you'll find being a grown up involves making your own decisions and taking responsibility for your own actions (or lack thereof) and not blaming everyone else. Something else you youngsters are woefully bereft of.
I've worked my ass off since I was 18, sometimes in jobs that made me ill. Many a time crying into my pillow at night because I hated my job. I worked hard and moved on to better things.
Maybe try that instead of whining about folk my age |

Sounds like you’ve been exploited your entire working life and have a massive chip on your shoulder. I can’t refund all those years but it might be helpful to come to terms with the fact that rich people fucked your life. Not young people. |

Nope, I don't have a chip on my shoulder at all. Ive got a very nice life, thank you.
And having working primarily in public service all my life, it ain't the rich who have "fucked" me. Indeed, as I said, I don't blame anybody for the choices I have made.
If anybody has "fucked" me over the years, it's the lazy fuckers that this thread was alluding to. And I'll say it again, in case youre struggling to keep up - the vast majority are young 'uns.
Do yourself a favour & get out of the blame culture. Its very liberating. And it may just make your "senior" colleagues very happy |

You'd love Luxembourg.
Perfect work/life balance. Free childcare. Free Healthcare- top of the line stuff. Excellent schools.
And always ALWAYS everyone goes OUT for lunch between 12 - 2. They even use government subsidized lunch vouchers so that the local restaurants and cafés get the business...
I hate the British and especially the American model of working your arse off with no holidays. |

I'm very glad that my work doesn't directly depend on others and they don't directly depend on me.
I have my own responsibilities which I do to the best of my ability (which is very good - I'm seriously good at what I do). I work hard for my own satisfaction these days, not because of external expectations.
Slightly off-topic as it's not laziness, but I do like the fact that the youg'uns won't be exploited the way that I was in my 20s. I worked round the clock for companies who would promise promotions and raises that never materialised, I've been made redundant without a second thought, I've been expected to be grateful for the bullshit unpaid promotion that's just a change in title, I've done the work of a full team and when I've moved on a company once had to hire three people to fill the role I held down even though they didn't have the money for the 5% raise I'd requested. Nobody should have to put up with that.
I love my grad trainees for being far more savvy to corporate bullshit than I was! |
