Reports that the TV presenter Gary Lineker, who is the brother of bar owner and celebrity Wayne Lineker, is paid 1.3 million every year by the BBC which is funded by the few remaining Britons who buy a TV licence. Is this good value? |

Yes it is - he is one of the best in the business - hence is fronting Champions League football on other channels… I think most of his haters don’t like that he has a mind and airs his views which goes against that of the right wing mob… |

Would add there a lot of envy about some people in the media but on the same hand they're ok with CEO's of the water companies picking up much more for allowing then denying pouring shit into the rivers, lakes and the sea..

I like him and think he's a great presenter. One of the best at his job, as said above, so remunerated accordingly.
You can ask the same question about almost anyone on the list, but if the BBC want to employ good people they have to pay them competitively. Didn't know you weren't a fan of market economics, OP?! |

As I said above, more watched when he didn’t present mod, and viewing figures determine most decisions in television, so he is paid far to much on that evidence |

"dont watch it or football - he does funny crisp adverts
hopefully the women presenters are paid on equal terms !!!"
Yes, they are, they don’t get anything like that because they aren’t anything near as good |

1.3m isn’t that much in that world. He is one of the best at what he does so should be paid for it.
4.5b is generated for the bbc through the tv licence alone, so its only 0.02% of the subscription fee.
Thats only 0.034p of your yearly £170 licence fee.
Would you like that back?
Bare in mind that the licensee fee isn’t the only revenue for the bbc they also get billions from advertisement, merch/dvd sales, property rights, selling content to other broadcasters etc. |

Haven’t ever watched him so I can’t make a fair comment about his ability as a presenter
But being paid that much out of money extorted from people is a bit ridiculous like, part of the reason I refuse to pay the pedo corporation telly licence is shit like that |

Do you think, maybe just a little, that was novelty value? Because there were no pundits at all? Or are there 500,000 people who avoid watching - foregoing the football - just *because* he presents it.
If it was just him, would the viewing figures automatically be higher when someone else presents, like Gabby Logan? |

People tuned in as it was a headline story at the time it was curiosity more than anything, they fell down again the following week. He has consistently bought in the viewers for nearly 25 years. |

I think its both tbf. Get a shit presenter and the show isn’t that great and will drop in viewing figures, the show they put on when he was suspended with no presenters and no commentary was shit in my opinion, you can get better on youtube. |

I've worked in one of Wayne Lineker's establishments. An interesting business model that he has, let's put it that way.
I don't think capitalism represents anything ethical other than profit is good. Whether a guy who was good at football and has a cheeky smile, should be paid 1000s times more for talking about football than someone who spends their days digging minerals out of the earth. I think that's a more pertinent question.
I do love football, I was brought up on it. It is just a game though. |

YouTube highlights for me if I need to catch up on the days football. I don’t want to sit listening to Jermaine Jenas and Danny Murphy pelting players that would’ve ran rings around them. |

Spot on.
These eye watering wages are universal across the industry. |

It was absolutely dreadful without the presenters, any football fan would tell you that. |

The trouble is that subconsciously he is seen primarily as a crisps advertiser whether or not he is actively advertising them, so paying him a lot won't make any difference to his association with crisps.
Just seeing him at all will influence people to go and find some!
Doesn't affect me as I can't afford either the crisps he is associated with or a TV licence. |

I preferred it
So what qualifies someone as a football fan ?
I played to semi pro level and have supported my team for 50 years |

So do you think the whole of MOTD is not worth the money or just GL?
As if you like just the highlights and no sound or commentary you can watch that on youtube or twitter for free. |

I dont think motd gives value for money.
This type of program is on its way out
Lots watch football on different platforms now
And with not many 3pm ko’s, most have watched on
Sky or tnt well before motd comes on |
