Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I'm not sure he will go for the next election as he needs a seat first. 2020 he will definitely want to be PM when Eddie Izzard becomes Mayor of London.

BoJo has a knack of succeeding.

Who is in charge of the clattering train?

The axles creak, and the couplings strain.

Ten minutes behind at the Junction. Yes!

And we're twenty now to the bad--no less!

We must make it up on our flight to town.

Clatter and crash! That's the last train down,

Flashing by with a steamy trail.

Pile on the fuel! We must not fail.

At every mile we a minute must gain!

Who is in charge of the clattering train?

Why, flesh and blood, as a matter of course!

You may talk of iron, and prate of force;

But, after all, and do what you can,

The best--and cheapest--machine is Man!

Wealth knows it well, and the hucksters feel

'Tis safer to trust them to sinew than steel.

With a bit of brain, and a conscience, behind,

Muscle works better than steam or wind.

Better, and longer, and harder all round;

And cheap, so cheap! Men superabound

Men stalwart, vigilant, patient, bold;

The stokehole's heat and the crow's-nest's cold,

The choking dusk of the noisome mine,

The northern blast o'er the beating brine,

With dogged valour they coolly brave;

So on rattling rail, or on wind-scourged wave,

At engine lever, at furnace front,

Or steersman's wheel, they must bear the brunt

Of lonely vigil or lengthened strain.

Man is in charge of the thundering train!

Man, in the shape of a modest chap

In fustian trousers and greasy cap;

A trifle stolid, and something gruff,

Yet, though unpolished, of sturdy stuff.

With grave grey eyes, and a knitted brow,

The glare of sun and the gleam of snow

Those eyes have stared on this many a year.

The crow's-feet gather in mazes queer

About their corners most apt to choke

With grime of fuel and fume of smoke.

Little to tickle the artist taste--

An oil-can, a fist-full of "cotton waste,"

The lever's click and the furnace gleam,

And the mingled odour of oil and steam;

These are the matters that fill the brain

Of the Man in charge of the clattering train.

Only a Man, but away at his back,

In a dozen ears, on the steely track,

A hundred passengers place their trust

In this fellow of fustian, grease, and dust.

They cheerily chat, or they calmly sleep,

Sure that the driver his watch will keep

On the night-dark track, that he will not fail.

So the thud, thud, thud of wheel upon rail

The hiss of steam-spurts athwart the dark.

Lull them to confident drowsiness. Hark!

What is that sound? 'Tis the stertorous breath

Of a slumbering man,--and it smacks of death!

Full sixteen hours of continuous toil

Midst the fume of sulphur, the reek of oil,

Have told their tale on the man's tired brain,

And Death is in charge of the clattering train!

Sleep--Death's brother, as poets deem,

Stealeth soft to his side; a dream

Of home and rest on his spirit creeps,

That wearied man, as the engine leaps,

Throbbing, swaying along the line;

Those poppy-fingers his head incline

Lower, lower, in slumber's trance;

The shadows fleet, and the gas-gleams dance

Faster, faster in mazy flight,

As the engine flashes across the night.

Mortal muscle and human nerve

Cheap to purchase, and stout to serve.

Strained too fiercely will faint and swerve.

Over-weighted, and underpaid,

This human tool of exploiting Trade,

Though tougher than leather, tenser than steel.

Fails at last, for his senses reel,

His nerves collapse, and, with sleep-sealed eyes,

Prone and helpless a log he lies!

A hundred hearts beat placidly on,

Unwitting they that their warder's gone;

A hundred lips are babbling blithe,

Some seconds hence they in pain may writhe.

For the pace is hot, and the points are near,

And Sleep hath deadened the driver's ear;

And signals flash through the night in vain.

Death is in charge of the clattering train!

I can, but then I'm a die-hard Tory supporter.

As for BoJo, is he really any different from Ken Livingstone who regarded motorists as his personal sworn enemy. It was not unknown for him to bend the rules to get himself re-elected time and again.

Boris for PM? Not a chance. Cameron will keep his job as PM for 10 years by which time BoJo will have either shuffled off to the private sector or he'll have firmly entrenched himself as Mayor and won't want to give it up. He knew when Cameron became leader of the party that his career as an MP had gone as far as it was going to go hence why he went for Mayor of London.

Politics a funny old game, almost as old as another old profession.

In some ways having the mainstream parties clearly nail their true colours to the mast would mean the nation would know where it stands.

Some people will be shafted by all the parties, others by just one of them. The question is which do we as a voting think when it comes to the ballot box.

The 'my vote is worthless' crowd need to wake up and vote.

He is a very dangerous person, the buffoon is partly an act.

All the Tories are twats, bastards who let everyone suffer and are only interested in helping their rich chums who they were at Eton with.

They are completely out of touch and don't care how many lives they ruin. All these cuts wouldn't be needed if they reeled in the money rich bastards owe HMRC.

Saying that, I don't hate rich people, only the ones that think they are bigger than the system.

A year at Uni now costs £9000, which is a disgrace. A tax of a percent On loads of daily business transactions would enable free tuition for all. Their are around 17,000 large transactions a day.

As for HS2 they can shove the plan up Eric Pickles fat arse. The money could buy much needed new trains.

Sorry for the rant but I hate the Tories.

What the Labour Government did was put money into the banks so that, on the Monday morning after the weekend it all fell apart, people could actually get money out of the ATMs.

Without that it would have been like Greece. Queues to into bank branches which didn't have money. Riots in the streets.

Yeah, Labour aren't great. I can't defend a lot of what they (well, Blair) have done in recent years.

But...its the lesser of two evils. There's a small chance Labour will stick up for ordinary people. There's zero chance the Tories will. They have always, and will always, be about looking after their rich mates.

" A year at Uni now costs £9000, which is a disgrace. "

The real disgrace is Labour's policy of offering degree courses to everyone. Many years ago... only the very brightest and best young people went to University and did degrees in useful subjects and went on to become doctors and scientists etc

The Labour party decided that this wasn't fair and everyone should be able to get a degree. But that cost lots and lots of money so they had to charge tuition fees. But that didn't matter to Labour, everyone could get a degree and it didn't matter that a generation of kids were starting their working lives with student loans to pay off and a mickey mouse degree that's as much use as tits on a fish in finding a job.

Sorry for the rant but I fucking hate Tony Blair and that fat one eyed prick that followed him for the way they fucked up my country

I wasn't fond of the way he replaced Blair but I agree with you, plus the exit strategy cooked up for him was pretty tasteless. No surprise you never see him on the telly after all that.

He didn't see the credit crunch coming when he was chancellor.

He didn't see that the price of gold would go up when he sold half our reserve for a give away price.

He didn't see that opening our borders to the world's waifs and strays and then trying to bribe them into voting labour with generous benefits would fuck up the country.

He didn't see that being concerned about immigration levels doesn't make someone a racist.

The only thing I'd like to see him doing is standing in the dock next to Blair being tried for treason for the way they fucked up this country and sold us out to the EU.

The tuition fallacy, always amazed at how so many get up on their hind legs and howl at the moon the second the subject comes up.

I blame a lot of the parents for actually allowing their not so bright progeny like little Chardonnay, Zinfandel or Merlot to go to a 3rd rate Uni to study Underwater Basket Weaving or the History of the Hole in the Swiss Cheese which are about as much use as tits on a fish.

The real irony though is despite all the parental whining and hand wringing a fair percentage of those kids who end up with a totally useless Desmond will never go on to get a job earning sufficient wages to ever HAVE to pay back a penny of what they owe

Absolutely not! He is a despicable individual. He's also got this stage managed image - underneath, he's every bit as manic right wing as the rest of the bullingdon club. If you want to lose rights, have worse employment prospects and live in a country that goes even more to the dogs, then he's your man. Pure filth, as far as I'm concerned.

Boris plays the buffoon, but behind his bumbling dumb but nice is a very clever and ruthless politician whos every act of buffoonery is carefully calculated that is why Cameron had him removed from parliament and given the poison chalice that is Mayor of London. Unfortunately I can see him as PM, after all we have a ultra right wing government that calls itself centre right one Britain Conservative and a Tory party pretending to be a centre left Labour party.

While basically true it is a bit misleading as the 99.25% tax was set in wartime. Winning the war and stopping wartime profiteering was far more important than encouraging enterprise.

Top tax rates continued to stay at around 90% throughout the rebuilding years of the 50's and 60's. Heath was the first to make any significant reduction, only to see it increased again by Wilson. Thatcher finally got her teeth into it and top rate as well as basic rates fell throughout her premiership. Funnily enough total receipts from top income tax actually rose as the rate was cut.

It is also worth noting that a recent "e petition" to restore top tax to 99% received just six signatures. Says it all really.
