Do you get locked into a workout?

From the land of haribos.

With this I mean, do you get locked into a workout where you do the same thing over and over? I think having a really rigid excessive selection in order to result, is just sort of maybe less natural feeling workouts, but, it also limits your ability to flow through the gym.

Because lets say your workout plan, step one, exercise one, incline smith machine, what happens when the smith machine is taken? If you dont have the ability to adapt and overcome to someone doing 5 sets of rdls or glute bridges or whatever else, what are you going to do? Are you just going to sit there and just wait 20 minutes? You know, that is nuts.

I dont think everybody does that, but there are some. I can almost guarantee it, we have all been working on something and then you can, you know, you get a little bit of a sick sense when someone is kind of hovering waiting for your machine, but so in my mind that is another positive to being a little bit more open to inspiration is not the right word, but you know, just seeing where the workout leads and following more of a basic approach in terms of its outline.

Like I know I want to do some heavy pressing, I want to maybe do some lighter pressing and focus on squeezing, stuff like that, but if I was about to walk over to the incline chest press and then it was taken, like right as I am kind of halfway to getting there. I am not just going to sit down for 5 minutes wait for the guy to finish, lose my pump, get out of the zone, no way, it is not just practical.

What is your view about it, do you have a rigid workout plan that you have to do it in that order, or can you also flow around the gym and then later to come back to that exercise choice?

Reigate

100% can go with the flow and adjust my workout plan.

I just stated on the smooth machine once, someone came over before my first set asking how long I was going to be, and then sat there annoyed watching for 25 mins.

Tbh was super annoying and had a terrible session because of it.

I generally don’t use the machines so it is very rare that I can’t do what I want to do when want do it. That said I am happy to flex if needed.

Mine is pretty rigid I don’t like to deviate from my workout plan with the odd exception for example at the end of leg day doing calves and adductors I’m happy to interchange those If a machine is taken

Thankfully the gym I train at is very well equipped (10x power racks for example, 4 full sets of dumbells with 10 benches ect)

I also schedule my workouts so that the days I rely on the most equipment are the quietest my split is chest and back, legs, shoulders and back, arms so chest and back is trained Friday night and legs Saturday evening both times are dead that only leaves shoulders and back and arms to be trained through week I also go for 8pm whrn it’s starting to empty out. I trained at home most my life so was used to hitting same exercise order every and like to still do sodo the same

I’m kinda putting my feelers out in the gym atm. I’m just hopping between machines and seeing what’s fun.

Last time I ended up doing like 6 sets on the pec fly. That shits fun

The main one for me is the bike tho. I can chill on that for 40mins +. Get some YouTube going and chill in zone 2.

Last i was on the bike I think it had enough. Just ended my workout at 35mins. Was very rude

Absolutely not. I have an idea of what I might be targeting that day. A hard cardio push, zone 2 cruise or a leg/arm day on the weights but beyond that I go with the flow and see what’s available when I get there.

For me, nothing is worse that getting into a rut at the gym, I always need to mix it up to keep my interest going

I don't normally like to deviate too much as it makes me lose track of my progress. For example, I can't alternate between a barbell and dumbbell bench press when the bench press is taken because I need to eventually try and progress my lifts. So I try to make it as rigid as possible

There is more to life than the gym. Like being tall.

It was about 5 years ago now that I swapped from strength to endurance. I took up triathlons and ironman events (long distance triathlons). I swapped from a crowded gym to large lakes and the open road, there is no crowding out of a workout now

I love flexibility in my life, including in my workouts. I generally follow a certain sequence but it's also interesting to compare results, when this is adjusted.

I kinda do, fella used to run but unfortunately he can't anymore after damaging his ankle. We both do a low calorie defect diet with lots of protein, it's working well for us both at the moment even though the fella can't do much.
