Over the rainbow, under the bridge |
I loved the old Panorama one about the spaghetti crop, but then I found this one!
In 1860 people throughout London received the following invitation: "Tower of London: Admit Bearer and Friend to view annual ceremony of Washing the White Lions on Sunday, April 1, 1860. Admittance only at White Gate." By noon a large crowd had gathered outside the tower. They were disappointed to find that lions hadn't been kept in the tower for centuries, let alone white lions. |

In 1989 or 1990, BMW ran what I thought was a perfect mick take of their customer base, which loads of them fell for hook, line and the proverbial sinker.
They ran ads in all the national dailies, in full BMW corporate house-style advertising a new optional extra you could have retro-fitted to your Beemer: A bonnet-badge wiper and washer.... just to keep your BMW badge nice a clean so that all the peasants who couldn't afford a 325i etc, could be made to feel even more inadequate being blinded from the continuous shine from your bonnet badge
So I understand, they actually had over 500 genuine inquiries to have one fitted... until they pointed out the contact name at BMW..... A Mr 'Uve Beenhaad'... |

The b&q ad with the rainbow paint my sister actually wanted to go buy some because it was well cool
Our local radio station did one years ago, they had given all this hype about some submarine being found and would be surfacing from the river via the quay...so many people actually turned up to see it. |

My favourite was on what was, at that time, GMTV. They did this report at a farm on how a farmer had recently found that feeding his cattle strawberries and bananas would lead to them producing strawberry and banana flavoured milk. Was class! |

Sent an apprentice many years ago to the CO-OP works department for 3 Fallopian Tubes, a bag of 1/2 inch nail holes and a gallon of warm steam ...
The note that was given back to the lad from the works manager read something along the lines of, "You're not funny, you bunch of bastards" obviously had no sense of humour - the apprentice laughed though

I was daft enough to go down to the foundry for a long weight.... |

When I was an apprentice I got sent to the stores for a tin of elbow grease
The best one I remember though was a program called Alternative 3 in the 70's.
Panorama or World in Action, or similar did a spoof about secret dark side of the moon bases and kidnapping scientists to work there. |

Crete or LANCASTER |
There was one about a mysterious animal experimental farm / lab / research station in Hertordshire, I think. Reports of heavy security , paths closed, strange noises. The local butcher was interviewed and told of making massive meat deliveries, but only to gate. Etc, etc
Intrepid camera crew cut through fencing and through the undergrowth caught glimpses of a Tyranosaurus Rex.
This was before Jurassic Park had been thought of.
So the story was about DNA and genetic experiments.
Anyone see it ? |
