There are sketches that are less acceptable under today's cultural climate but I never found them offensive and still don't. They were well observed most of the time and seldom designed to deride the characters.

For me the statements were about how small minded a lot of people can be.

Well comedy is subjective

Not everyone has the same sense of humour

But, if someone doesn’t find something funny, that’s ok.

To call it offensive is a shame

The phrase , 'it's just a joke' has to be used in a precise context.. because being intentionally insulting isn't 'just a joke' .... Ricky Gervais I have all the time in the world for , he never gives offense.. that I can say with my hand on my heart.

I've never seen it or any "comedy" shows of that era.

I've never seen the Inbetweeners or the Fast show either.

Can't say I would find any of them offensive but from the very short clips I've seen online from Little Britain I don't find them humourous at all so I wouldn't be encouraged to watch them.

I've never been a fan of Ricky Gervais and therefore never seen any of his TV shows.

I've only ever seen him on chatshows.

Someone gave me free tickets to one of his shows about 5 or 6 years ago and I didn't crack a smile throughout.

I was in the same venue a couple of months later listening to Sir Ranulph Fiennes and laughing like a drain at some of his tales.

Humour is very subjective.

This is true.

A vocal minority will decry anything as offensive. Some of it is simply subjectively not funny.

I dont tend towards humour that punches down personally. But well crafted humour is a joy.

Never find anything offensive because it's an act for humour. Just like they say when attended a live stand up if you are easily offended then it's not for you

Some people find certain things funny when it's directed at someone else but once the table is turned it's offensive

Come fly with me? Do I find that show that features blackface offensive? Hmmmm.

Ok I’ve thought about it and I’m pretty sure my answer is yes- it is offensive.

I don’t really mind what that makes me. I accept whatever labels that come. Blackface is not funny and it is offensive.

Reply privately, Reply in forum +quote or View forums list

Not offensive, but got a bit tired with the same old thing.

The characters are exaggerations of people who do exist, for comedic effect. Otherwise it would be very boring, as people are generally boring.

I'm a fan of Stewart Lee so what do I know ?

" Blackface is not funny and it is offensive. "

Agree. Did I find LB personally offensive at the time? I confess I probably didn't give it enough thought. I liked some sketches and not others. I liked the Barbara Cartland and weight watchers parodies, for example, but didn't find it funny enough to want to watch it again now.

But I find it odd if people can't see why blackface is problematic (to say the least), even if not personally offended. Matt Lucas and David Walliams have said themselves they wouldn't do that again.

It’s your opinion "

Doesn't the same apply the other way though? If it's just an opinion, why do so many people get defensive over it?

Very little offends me, but I do appreciate good comedy (old and new) that doesn’t rely on the ‘shock factor’ of f-words etc.

Clever humour is best.

Only Fools and Horses (for example) was one of the best, and One Foot in the Grave had clever humour with the occasional well-placed expletive.

These days everything is written so it offends nobody. Such a shame.
