I used to be always join the union when I changed jobs but not anymore. When I needed help and tried to contact my union they didn't want to know, the rep rang me back a week after my disciplinary meeting had taken place. They were a total waste of time and I've never joined a union since |

I had a similar experience when I was younger. Never joined a union since. |

I have to be in a union. I had the local rep email my boss about the lack of contact re: flexi working after mat leave and I got the outcome I wanted immediately. This was months after when I should have heard!
I've been very vocal in the past saying even if you don't agree with the union on a particular matter you should support them, otherwise they are weakened.
I guess it depends on your job whether they are a lot of use a lot of the time, or occasionally helpful. |

I do not belong to a union, however, I have to pay 2 lots of professional fees totalling over 0.5k GBP each year.
I cannot work as I do without one; and without the other, I would lose a few letters after my name.
Luckily, my employer pays for them.

Send the taxman a letter with how much you pay in union fees and your personal details and they will alter your tax code to reduce your tax by the amount of union fes you pay. |

I can't think of anyone who hasn't benefitted wither directly or indirectly from the campaigns trade unions have carried out over the years in such fields as anti-discrimination, working hours, national minimum wage, statutory sick pay, maternity pay and leave, access to tribunals and much more. |

what have the Union done..?
if you dont feel as a member that the rep is up to the job, step forward..
as members you are the Union..
OP, it can be in some Unions a bit like an insurance policy for when representation is required for discipline, grievance or pension issue's..
your fees are small beer should you need the Unions solicitors etc.. |

Do you do all that stuff on company time? I'd be furious as a boss if you did. Unions are supposed to be for work-related stuff between employers and employees. |
