How do you do it? Do you practice mindfulness?

Thinking about others and trying to solve a problem is at least thinking with a purpose.

40 odd years of constant use/abuse and mostly multithreading or deep diving and analyzing. I wish I could turn it off ... many friends appear to have happier lives because they can walk away from things or thoughts ... unfortunately for me, once the train of thoughts start ... I have to reach the end

Goal oriented... some thoughts are neat and tidy and take you stepwise where you need to go, others are more open -ended I. agree ... I would also assume thoughts end when you get totally distracted by some fascinating thing and forget the original... tangents can be dangerous.

Constant whirr, sometimes to the point of denying me much needed sleep.

Occasionally it stops after really great sex for a few minutes

I have learned to use self hypnosis to distract my conscious brain so as to give my subconscious chance to resolve the issues it has, which is what often is the cause of my lack of conscious focus.

That's great if it works for you. I used to leave myself voice-mail messages to the office phone in the middle of the night. Writing it down opens up other thoughts for me.

I didn't manage to switch off for years but that was no way to live. Now the minute I leave work, it's out of my brain. If I lose the bit of paper I'm stuck though!

Why are you stuck? If it was important enough I am sure you could resurrect the thought and complete the action. If not it was just a piece of paper.
